“WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW?”PART 2 ACTION COMICS583 SEPTEMBER 1986
Brathor discussing his plans with the Legion ofSuper-Villains
Continuing from my last comic book review far too long ago we will be looking at the second part of Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? story line that continues in Action Comics 583. This issue introduces us to Lois’s new husband Jordon who doesn’t seem to like super heroes all that much arguing that “…us ordinary working slobs are the real heroes!” Continuing the story of Superman’s last days Lois recounts how Superman destroyed the golden key that unlocked the only door into the Fortress of Solitude. Meanwhile outside the fortress Brainiac/Luthor and the Kryptonite Man are joined by Saturn Woman, Lightning Lord and Cosmic King who came from the 30th century to help destroy Superman. The three villains from the future state that they know that on this day in history Superman met his greatest foe and was no more and that the other super heroes will try to intervene to help. Brathor (I’m just gonna call him this from now on) agrees to let them help him in his plan as he sets up a force shield around the fortress that would prevent any outside help. Though why he lets the other villains stay after setting up the force shield doesn’t make much sense to me since he seems overly confident he will be the one to defeat Superman. The villains start firing on the fortress with weapons but Superman is able to destroy them from afar with his heat vision since he can’t get close enough to fight them head on due to the Kryptonite Man’s power.I still can’t get
over how Batman thinks that hitting the force field with a pole willdo any good
As the day goes on Batman, Robin, Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman and other heroes show up to try to break their way through Brathor’s barrier but their efforts are futile. Though it is quite humorous to see Batman just hitting this force field with a stick and not coming up with any other ways to get through it. Eventually the villains stop firing on the fortress and a stalemate begins as night falls. Over the course of the night Supes has a talk with Perry White discussing how he had let down both Lois and Lana as he couldn’t give them the love that they deserved back. Superman is feeling guilty as he loved Lana when he was Superboy and that she reminds him of his youth growing up in Smallville but since he has grown up and moved away he has fallen in love with Lois Lane. Feeling that he can’t tell Lois how he feels without hurting Lana Superman is wracked with guilt over how things have turned out. Elsewhere in the fortress Lana Lang and Jimmy Olsen run into each other in the trophy room where they each had the same idea to use items in the fortress to grant them super powers that would allow them to help Superman. Jimmy had found a flask of the Elastic Lad serum and Lana found a pool with a sign saying, “Magic Lake Water (Probable Unidentified Radiation Source) and the two of them use both of those to gain powers. With their powers the two of them rush out to face the villains as Lana knocks out the Kryptonite Man and Jimmy works to deactivate the force shield. When confronted by Brathor Lana is shocked to see what has happened to Luthor who is able to regain some control as he begs her to kill him. Lana gives Brathor a swift karate chop that breaks his neck. However, Cosmic King uses his transmutation abilities to take away Lana’s power and she falls to the ground after trying to escape and is zapped by Lightning Lord which kills her. Jimmy enraged after the death of Lana goes to attack the others saying that their plan has failed as he was able to take down the shield but is shot in the back by Braniac who has now taken full control of Luthor’s dead body. The villains ponder why the other heroes haven’t shown up yet since the barrier is down but Braniac states that perhaps some other force is keeping the shield up as it is fate for him to win this day. (Seriously where is Superman during all this?) Anyways Braniac blasts a hole into the fortress and we get a moment where Perry White saves his wife Alice from some falling debris and the two go off to hide and make up for time lost? (Odd moment to go off and bang but whatever) The Kryptonite Man goes through the fortress screaming for Supes to come out and fight him but instead Krypto does and manages to kill his enemy but not before dying himself from all the Kryptonite radiation. Superman enraged after learning about the deathof Lana Lang
Finally we get to see Supes who is flying through the wreck of the fortress carrying Lois and a trophy that the Legion had given him in the last issue. When confronted by the villains from the 30th century who gloat about killing Lana and Jimmy Superman loses it and blasts them with his heat vision but they are able to escape back to their original time. (Kind of a lame fight here as they just murdered one of his closest friends and they get away free with only some burns) Outside of the fortress Superman is confronted by Braniac who is unable to do anything as Luthor’s body had started to enter rigor mortis and isn’t responding to his commands anymore. The skull of Braniac hops off Luthor’s body but does not get far as Braniac soon falls over dead. (I don’t get this at all as we saw in the last issue that Braniac could survive without a host as he had been alive for a while before Luthor found him) The death of Braniac With all of his enemies dead or gone Superman wonders what is going on until herealizes that one villain of his hasn’t shown up and shouts out the name Mxyzptlk! The evil imp appears and is more sinister looking than he normally is. Mxyzptlk explains that since he is an immortal being that has been alive for thousands of years he gets bored and eventually goes through phases every two thousand years where he tries out new things. In his first phase he did absolutely nothing and then decided in the next one to do only good things and help people. His next phase he had decided to be mischievous but now that phase has ended so he has decided to become totally evil and set his sites on ruining Superman’s life. With this said Mxyzptlk changes to his true form which resembles a very tall red and black figure with a hugeee conehead and tufts of hair on the side and a blue white and red field surrounding it as you can see in the picture. A very different looking Mxyzptlk Mxyzptlk confident that he will destroy Superman as it was foretold that Superman would meet his end on this day says that its inevitable and that the whole 30th century knows it! This gives Lois the idea to remind Superman of the statue that he is still carrying from the Legion. Upon inspecting the statue further Supes notices something and quickly grabs Lois and flies off to the Chamber in Time and grabs the Phantom Zone Projector. Superman aims the projector at Mxyzptlk who in a panic says his name backwards to go back to the fifth dimension. Mxyzptlk lets out a cry as he is split between the fifth dimension and the phantom zone and crumbles into a pile of ash.Report this ad
Superman says that he made a choice to kill Mxyzptlk as he couldn’t let something that powerful and evil get away. Unfortunately he has broken his oath of never killing and in a dejected manner and ignoring Lois’s pleas he walks into a room labeled Gold Kryptonite Sample Storage Chamber and closes the door. Lois says that she never saw Superman again after that. As a side note Gold Kryptonite in the Post-Crisis era robbed Kryptonians of their powers permanently. With the force shield down the other heroes of the earth enter the fortress to survey the carnage left behind and they find Lois outside the door that Superman entered Forcing the door open they find nothing inside except a secret passageway leading out. With his powers gone the others theorize that Superman walked out in to the sub zero temperatures and froze to death although his body was never found. The
end of Superman…
Back in the present Tim asks Lois if she thinks the rumors about Superman still being alive might be true to which she states no because she was there that day. With the interview over we see Tim leave but not before Lois’s husband comes out with their son Jonathan. In case you didn’t catch on Jordon is Superman depowered and living a normal life with Lois and their son. Although while Lois and Supes are talking we see their son Jonathan playing around and grab a piece of coal from a mini fireplace and crushes it so hard that it becomes a diamond. The story ends with a wink to the audience from Supes and I guess the gold kryptonite didn’t rob him of his powers and that’s why he was able to survive being out in the sub zero temperatures. Or maybe the last part of the story was a lie and the other heroes know that he’s still alive too and just faked his death? I don’t know what really happened but either way this was and still is a very influential story in comics history. Lois and Jordan living happily ever after? Many look at it as a perfect way to end a long running comic book series with proper closure for its characters. The story is very memorable as we witness the deaths of many long running characters in the series and we see Superman helpless for most of the story as he is unable to save his friends. Although I still gotta wonder where he was when Lana and Jimmy were off fighting? Off boning Lois I guess since we see them together rushing to find out what is happening. I do like the ending though as Mxyzptlk, Braniac, or Luthor were not the ones responsible for Superman’s death but instead it was Superman himself. Because he broke his oath of never killing anyone Superman ended up killing the identity of himself and became Jordon Eliot instead. The story is pretty dark but not overly dark and depressing and fits with the tone of the Superman comics for this period. It is a good sendoff for the Superman of the Bronze Age and ushers in the beginning of the dark age of comics. My only criticisms of the story is that we don’t see what Superman was doing during some pivotal moments and why did Braniac just up and die after he lost control of Luthor’s body? In the first issue he was shown to have survived in the antiartic by himself until Luthor dug him up so why did he die now? I’m surprised this story line has never been made into a DC animated film before as they could do a lot with this story by updating it and fleshing it out a bit more to give it some weight and fix some of the issues I had with it. After this storyline ended the Superman comics were rebooted with the launch of the six part Man of Steel mini-series that updated the character and his supporting cast for the modern age. I hope to update this blog more frequently and I should be back here within the next day or so with my thoughts on the Shazam! movie!Advertisements

CAPTAIN MARVEL A FUN TRIP BACK INTO THE 90’S Captain Marvel blasting off into space and blasting a bunch of ships! So I went to see Captain Marvel over the weekend not knowing that much about the character except for seeing her as Miss Marvel occasionally popping up in Rogue’s mind during the 90’s animated X-Men series. In that series Rogue was a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants working with her adopted mother Mystique at the time. While on a mission to steal a experimental jet from the Pentagon Miss Marvel shows up to stop them. In the scuffle Rogue grabs Miss Marvel and under the orders of Mystique doesn’t let go until the both of them pass out. Rogue had absorbed Miss Marvel’s powers permanently along with her psyche while Miss Marvel had remained in a coma for years. So going into this movie I didn’t know what to expect from the character other than what we saw in the trailers. I’m a fan of the MCU movies and have stayed up to date with all of them so far. Last year I even marathoned every movie leading up to Infinity War within 5days of seeing it.
It’s almost eerily creepy how good the degaed Samuel L. Jackson looks After seeing Captain Marvel I found it a lot of fun. The film feels a lot like a buddy cop movie from the 90s between Vers (Brie Larson) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who must team up to stop members of the Skrull alien race from finding a experimental engine designed by Dr. Wendy Lawson. The chemistry between the two is a lot of fun and Nick Fury has some of the best lines in the movie though other highlights is Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and Goose the cat! The movie isn’t a straight up origin story as Vers can’t remember her past and so over the course of the movie we discover her past at the same time that she does. At the beginning Vers already has her powers and is a member of the Kree Starforce a group of aliens protecting the Kree Empire from attacks by the shape shifting Skrull race. The film offers some interesting twists and turns as we learn more about Ver’s past as well as the conflict between the Kree and Skrull races. As someone who only has a marginal knowledge about these characters from the comics and animated series I was surprised with the way things played out inthe film.
Vers in 1995’s Los Angeles Subway without a cellphone in sight! Since the movie takes place in 1995 there are a lot of throwbacks to 90’s culture with movies, arcade machines, clothing and music. Speaking of the music the soundtrack for the film is on point. As someone who was just entering high school in late 1995 I was well into the music of that year and this film plays a lot of great songs that got a lot of playtime on MTV and the radio. Hits from Garbage, Elastica, No Doubt, TLC, R.E.M. and a bunch of others play throughout the film. Surprisingly there are no songs from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkin (which was huge hit at the time), but they do show promo posters for the album in the background at least. Because the film takes place in 1995 and features a younger Nick Fury and Agent Coulson we get to see the magic that the MCU films have done in deaging actors and they did a amazing job here. Previously we would only see the actors deaged in a scene or two but Nick Fury is in a majority of the film and they did a great job on making it work. Seeing a younger Samuel L. Jackson was crazy when you realize that he is 70 years old now. Vers on the chase while riding the lite rail My only complaint with the film would be the villain who does get a decent amount of screen time but I would of liked to have seen their character fleshed out a bit more. After we have had such excellent villains as Thanos, the Vulture, and Killmonger it would of been nice if this one would of been as fleshed out as they were. However, they are still decent and better than some of the more forgettable villains of the MCU, yeah I’m looking at you Malekith from Thor: The Dark World! Overall I liked the film and I hope that we see more of these characters in the future, which will be likely as the film did phenomenal over the weekend, breaking a bunch of box office records. I am a little sad that we probably will never see her in her classic Miss Marvel costume but that is okay. Regarding all the “controversies” surrounding the film, I’m gonna get on my soap box here for a bit. I thought Brie Larson did a good job in the role and people criticizing her for being wooden and “not smiling that much” are seeing a different movie than I saw. So many people just like to have a mob mentality and hate things without even seeing it based on some inane thing that they don’t like about it.Regarding her comments about “white journalists” they were taken wayyyy out of context and used to stir up people to boycott this film. If you don’t like an actor/actress fine but if you’re gonna stop seeing movies based on things that they say or do that you don’t like well expect to not see many films in the future because celebs are people like us and like the rest of us they can say and do whatever they want. I’m a big Clint Eastwood fan and I love the Dirty Harry and Man With No Name films and can still watch them despite the controversial things that he has said in recent years. For some reason I like this little touch of her blowing her hairout of the way
I’m also a part of few groups on Facebook and there hasn’t been a day in the past few weeks that has gone by that didn’t get at least one post about how this film sucks by someone looking to start shit or get attention. Now granted people are entitled to their opinions but the hate this film has been getting is just staggering. If you don’t like the film fine, but you don’t have to go out of your way to bitch about it constantly like I see oh so many people do. I’m not the biggest fan of Jurassic Park but I don’t go on a tirade every time someone brings it up. Anyways I’m jumping off my soap box now. Normally I wouldn’t address such topics on my blog but to not talk about them in regards to this film would be foolish. Anyways that is all for this review. I would recommend seeing this in theaters especially if you are hyped for Avengers: Endgame and would like to see how this film leads into that one. The tribute to Stan Lee and his cameo are great additions as well I know I’ve been away for awhile since I started a certificate program at my local community college with my fellow blogger Biblio Nyan , but I hope to get back into the swing of things with this review and a couple other ones I’m working on atm. Until then see you later!xyamuchax comic

AQUAMAN ANOTHER FUN MOVIE FROM THE DC EXTENDED UNIVERSE Last night I saw Aquaman for Christmas and went into the film hopeful after I heard good word of mouth on it. My view of the DC Extended Universe has been a rocky one since its inception with the Man of Steel film in 2013 which I hated. My view on the DCEU certainly didn’t improve with Batman vs Superman in 2016 to which I didn’t even bother seeing in theaters instead opting to watch the extended cut when that was released. I haven’t seen Suicide Squad yet but will get to watching it eventually. Both Wonder Woman and Justice League I liked and felt they were a improvement over the previous films and a change in course for how this film universewill progress.
Now we have Aquaman directed by James Wan who is best known for the Conjuring series of movies. This movie was a lot of fun as Jason Mamoa is wonderfully charismatic as Arthur Curry and the film boasts some impressive action scenes with creative camera shots and locations. One of the highlights of the movie is how wonderfully creative it is with its visuals, costumes, and creature designs. The kingdoms under the seas are very cool looking and contain an awesome blend of colours and settings to give us something that we haven’t seen in film since probably the Gungan underwater kingdom in Star Wars The Phantom Menace. I definitely hope that when the Oscar nominations come out that Aquaman will pick up some in special effects and costume design as I feel the teams who worked on this film really did a wonderful job. While watching the film I was pleasantly reminded of older films such as the Indiana Jones series and even the 1980 Flash Gordon movie that Aquaman seemed to be calling back to with its tone and use of action and adventure. Having never read any Aquaman comics and only seeing the character in the Superfriends and Justice League animated series I was intrigued by the lore that was shown in the film in regards to the seven kingdoms under the sea and with the characters that were in the movie. Arthur Curry has a good arc in the movie as he continues his story of being a reluctant hero that we saw in Justice League to eventually accepting his position as a Prince of Atlantis. The villains in the movie while not on the same level as some of the ones in the latest MCU movies were above average for a comic book movie. They weren’t wholly one dimensional and we got some character development with them though I would of liked just a little bit more to flesh them out but this was a good start for this film franchise. The relationship between Arthur and Mera was okay but could of been developed more. Thankfully Jason Mamoa and Amber Heard have good chemistry together and their feelings for one another don’t come completely out of nowhere. The action in the film is a lot of fun with the fight between Aquaman and Mera versues Black Manta and his troops in Sicily as a standout with its impressive choreography and camera angles. The final battle in the film is a impressive all out battle that reminded me of the battles in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films and were very well put together with a lot of wide shots so you can see the action and thankfully no shaking cam. After how successful the film has been since it opened I hope that the same team will come together to create a sequel. I saw the film in XD and I would recommend it based on the visuals alone and for fans of comic book movies in general. One has to wonder what direction the DCEU will go towards now as we have Shazam coming out next year and Wonder Woman 1984 the year after that. With apparently Henry Cavil and Ben Affleck out of the the picture will we ever see another team up movie? Or will Warner Brothers continue to make stand alone pics and forget trying to tie things in together.xyamuchax comic

MUSINGS ON INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE OK so I usually use this blog to talk about classic comic books but I feel like I must talk about this film. When I first saw the trailer for the movie over a year ago I thought it looked interesting but was sort of skeptical of the animation style. I knew of the character of Miles Morales but being a comic book fan who stopped reading new comics after the implosion of the mid 1990’s I have never read any of his books. So I was hesitant about the new film but was willing to give it a shot and see how it is. As I saw more of the film and learned that it would feature other Spider characters I was a bit wary. I didn’t want the film to be crammed full of characters and feel over bloated and not develop its characters as other notorious super hero films tried to do and failed. I also wasn’t that familiar with the other Spider characters that they had introduced. I knew about some of these characters but didn’t really know them all that well aside from Spider-Pig. Cut to now and I have seen it twice and have fallen in love with this film. Everything about this film I love. The characters, the story, the setting, the animation, and the music all come together to create what I believe to be one of the best if not THE BEST Spider-Man film. This film oozes style all over and yet it isn’t a matter of style over substance as this film carries a lot of emotional punches. This film made me cry more than any other film this year due to the emotional resonances I felt with the characters. I always felt as a kid I could relate to the original character of Peter Parker as a fellow awkward nerd in school. This film had me relate to the older Peter Parker in the film and made me love and appreciate the character even more now. The characters of Miles, Peter and Gwen in the film get the most screen time and are well developed but even the secondary characters like Penni Parker and Sp//der, Noir Spider-Man and Spider-Pig all get their moments to shine. We even get some character development with the villains in the film which is an added bonus that allows for them to not be strictly one-dimensional. The story is very well done as it manages to pack enough action and emotional scenes into its run time. The relationship between Miles and Peter is very touching and we see a different take on Spider-Man as a mentor figure that we haven’t seen before. There is a lot of emotional gravitas with Miles as well in regards to the relationships he has with his father and uncle. There are a ton of Easter eggs for fans of Spider-Man throughout the film as well as just general pop culture references. The animation in this film is amazing as it looks different from any other animated film out there. At first the stilted animation was different and off putting but as I came to watch it more I realized how it just works in this universe. The visual style really makes you feel like it is an animated comic book come to full life and the colours….my god the colours are so vibrant and luminescent that they just pop out at you. Every frame of this film is like looking at a work of art. I cannot recommend seeing this film in theaters enough it is a spectacle to behold and if you have any interest in Spider-man or comic books then I highly highly suggest you go see it.Report this ad

“WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW?”PART 1 SUPERMAN 423SEPTEMBER 1986
Hello! Sorry for the long period in between reviews but lots of things kept me busy from writing reviews. I hope to get back into the swing of things now that my life has settled down for the moment. At the time of printing this was the final issue of this Superman comic series but it would return 20 years later with the OneYear Later reboot
This week I’m looking back at one of the quintessential Superman stories from the Bronze Age. This two part story was written by Alan Moore of Watchmen, V for Vendetta and Batman the Killing Joke fame, while the art was done by Curt Swan in his final artwork for the series. Curt Swan was one of the most prominent artists for Superman during the Silver Age. The story was the final Superman story published before the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths took place that closed the door on the Silver Age of Superman comics that started in the early 1960s. After Crisis of Infinite Earths the Superman series was rebooted with the Man of Steel mini-series written by John Byrne which I will talk about sometime in the future. The story takes place in the then future of 1997 where a reporter for the Daily Planet Tim Crane visits the home of Lois Lane who has since retired from her job as a reporter. Crane had come to talk to Lois to discuss the disappearance of Superman ten years previously. As one of the last people to see Superman before that happened Lois recounts the Man of Steel’s final days and begins with Superman returning to Earth after being in space only to find that in his absence Bizarro had arrived in Metropolis and proceeded to go on a rampage. When Superman confronts his polar opposite about the destruction he had The death of Bizarro caused Bizarro tells him that he is not a perfect imperfect duplicate and decided to act the opposite of Superman. Bizarro decided that since Superman’s home world of Krypton blew up on accident and that he arrived on Earth as a child Bizarro should do the opposite by first blowing up the Bizarro world and coming to Earth as an Adult. Bizarro also decides to start killing people since Superman doesn’t kill. In his final act to be the perfect imperfect duplicate Bizarro realizes that since Superman is alive then Bizarro must die and opens a lead case that had contained blue kryptonite in it that kills him. Things get even weirder as a few days later Clark Kent is preparing togo on the air for
The public revelation of Clark Kent as Superman GBSTV when he receives a package. (At this time Clark Kent was a TV news reporter for Galaxy Broadcasting instead of a newspaper reporter for the Daily Planet) When the package is opened it is revealed that it contains a bunch of Superman action figures. When Lana Lang shows Clark how they work the figure sends a lazer that blows up a desk. With that the figures come alive and start focusing their lazers onto Clark who is unharmed by them but his suit is blown to pieces revealing the Superman costume underneath. (Way to go Clark you could of dodged or tried to take cover at least ) The toys then start talking and reveal that they were sent by the Toyman and the Prankster who tell Clark to look in a bigger box that was sent to him to find out how they know who he really is. Inside the box is the body of Pete Ross who was apparently tortured into revealing who Superman really is. Supes who is obviously very pissed off about this is able to quickly find the two culprits by following the radio waves being transmitted since he can see them. When confronted about why the two formerly harmless villains had decided to start killing people the two could not give Superman a reason why and just looked dazed andconfused.
The melding of Braniac and Lex Luthor At the funeral for Pete Ross Superman ponders what it causing his villains to become so deadly and wonders what will happen when Luthor or Braniac decide to strike. Since Superman couldn’t keep up the Clark Kent secret identity he dropped it and went into hiding. We next see Lex Luthor hiking in Antarctica who uses a tracking device to find the remains of Braniac who had been long thought destroyed in his last encounter with Superman. When looking over the head of Braniac, the alien device comes alive and takes over Luthor’s mind and body and the new duo of Luthor and Braian set forth to build a new ship to confront Superman. A few days later in Metropolis outside the Daily Planet building a group of Metallos attack as retaliation for Superman apparently killing the original Metallo. When Superman arrives he goes to the top of the Daily Planet building and starts to rub the rod errr pole uhh shaft. (dammit there is no way to not make this sentence sound bad). Anyways this Superman saving the day by rubbing the shaft…. device is holding up the Daily Planet sign and by rubbing it fast enough Supes has turned it into a super powerful magnet. Superman then lifts the sign and uses it to trap the Metallos and transported them to prison where they were eventually restored to their human form. Realizing that all his friends and family are in danger Superman then decided to hide them away in the Fortress of Solitude until he can figure out what is going on. Superman confronted by Supergirl from the past and future after her death. Damn that sentence does not make much sense on itsown….
With Superman in hiding the Kryptonite Man had shown up in Metropolis to force Supes to come out and face him. However, Braniac and Luthor now with a newly rebuilt ship spots the Kryptonite menace and decides to use him against Superman as they deduce that he is most likely hiding in his fortress. At the aforementioned fortress Superman is surprised when the Legion of Super Heroes from the 30th century appears along with Supergirl. Supes is distressed by this encounter as Supergirl had previously died during the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths. This Supergirl had apparently traveled with the Legion in the past before her death in Crisis. (Time travel in comics is always confusing) The reason the legion had come to visit Superman was to present him a gift of a statue of himself presented by Brainac 5 who is somehow the descendant of the original Braniac who grew up on the planet Colu. (Did I say time travel in comics is confusing? I meant a lot of things in comics are confusing) This issue ends on a somber note as Superman can’t help but feel that the Legion are paying their last respects to him since they know what the outcome of these events will be. What hits home even harder is that Supergirl asks where the current timeline version of her is since you can’t go to a timeline where you already existed. Superman replies that she is inthe past.

Whenever people talk about classic Superman stories this is usually atthe top of the list
or near it at least and I can see why. The artwork is very well done for its time and the characters are drawn realistically and not heavily stylized which I personally prefer in super hero comics. The plot device of framing it in the future and of Lois telling another reporter is a nice touch as it reveals that something happened to Superman and we get to go back and see what transpired. Because of the narrative framing device the story is filled with a sense of overriding dread as you know bad things are going to happen and the whole comic has a sense of finality to it. All the events that transpire during this issue really show that stuff is getting serious and is a clear transition of comics going from the The death of Bizarro is tragic as while the character had always been shown at that time as the opposite of Superman he was basically a harmless villain for him to face. To have seen him go on a rampage and take his own life so that in his own twisted sense of logic he could be the perfect imperfect Superman is very sad. The reunion between Superman and Supergirl is very sad as well especially if you had read Crisis on Infinite Earths (Which I hope to review someday). The ending image of Superman sitting alone with Krypto the Superdog is very heartbreaking as he realizes that he will most likely die soon and is afraid for his friends and family that he has gathered at the Fortress. My only critique of the story I mentioned already with the revelation of Clark Kent as Superman by the toy Supermen figures. Nonetheless I highly recommend this to any fan of Superman and along with the second part is a good way for a long standing series to come to a conclusion instead of being rebooted or retconned to death. I’ll be back soon with my look at the second part of the story and discuss how this storyline played a part in transitioning comics from the bronze age to the dark age of comics.xyamuchax Bronze

STAN LEE MEMORIAL, 1922-2018 We all read yesterday of the sad passing of comic legend Stan Lee. My earliest recollection of Stan Lee was in the Pryde of the X-Men cartoon pilot that aired in 1989 and had a voice over of Stan introducing the show in a way only he could: “Welcome. This is Stan Lee of Marvel Comics, warning you to look around you. Your classmates, your friends. You never know which one of them may be a mutant. A person born with strange and wonderous powers. Now, some mutants like the X-Men, use their special gifts for good. But, then there are the terrorist mutants, who plan to destroy thehuman race.”
If anyone else were to say these lines they would come off as cheesy but Stan Lee was always so sincere with his enthusiasm for his characters. Over the years I became familiar with the eccentric Stan Lee as while he wasn’t writing any of the comics I was reading as a kid he would make numerous appearances in in all of the Marvel animated series and movies. Probably the most touching one was when he showed up in the series finale of the 90’s Spider-Man animated series. It was a bit surreal for Spider-Man to meet his creator but looking back on it now it is a cute moment and really ends the series on a high note if not for the fact that we never got to see Spidy finding Mary Jane who was lost in an alternative dimension, but Idigress.
By the late 1950s the super hero comic industry was stagnating. After years of being censored due to the Comics Code Authority many super hero comics such as Batman, Superman, and others focused on science fiction and fantastic elements and drifted away from their roots as crime fighters. Slowly things began to change with the new reworking of Batman as he slowly started to get back to his roots and the reintroduction of the Flash. However, a significant shakeup was occurring over at Marvel Comics where Stan Lee and other talented writers and artists such as Steve Dikto and Jack Kirby helped reinvigorate the super hero genre. With the creation of such classic characters as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and the X-Men, Stan and the others at Marvel raised the bar by creating characters that struggled with everyday real life problems that humanized these amazing and fantastic characters. From this point on super heroes would follow in the Marvel tradition to make their characters more complex and realistic as before many of them were classified as personifications of goodness. Now heroes could be relatable and we could see ourselves in some of these characters. One of the main reasons I love Spider-Man so much is that I could relate to the character of Peter Parker as he was picked on at school and had trouble making friends. It was due to these factors that Stan and the other creators left an everlasting legacy on American Pop Culture as we can see with how insanely popular comic book characters are rightnow.
The Aforementioned
comic with burn marks and all Stan Lee would write many stories for Marvel but it is his Spidy stories that I am the most familiar with as he is my favourite Marvel character after all. Stan wrote many of the best Spidy stories and it is probably his two parter in Amazing Spider-Man 39 and 40 that I like the best. One of the earliest comics that I remember getting was a reprint of these two issues in a Marvel Tales from 1971 which was the oldest comic that I had as a kid and I treasured it even if it was burnt a little. This issue is a landmark in Spidy history as in this issue the Green Goblin uses a gas on Spider-Man that numbs his spidy sense and because of that the Goblin is able to find out Spidy’s identity. The Goblin then ambushes Peter who is unaware that his spidy sense isn’t working and is captured. Thinking that he has his foe at his mercy the Goblin reveals himself as Norman Osborn the father of Peter’s friend Harry Osborn. Peter is able to break free and eventually overcomes Gobby though not before a electrical shock to his system renders Norman with a case of amnesia. It is with this issue that really cemented the Goblin as Spider-Man’s arch rival as the amnesia would wear off in time and the two would clash many times. Having his arch nemesis be the father of his friend would create a dilemma for Peter that would lead to serious consequences down the line. However, it is with these two issues that really invested me into the character as a kid when I first read them. It is because of such classic storytelling that made comics what they are today. While I unfortunately never got to meet Stan Lee (something that I’ll always regret) I am happy that we live in a world where one guy couldmake a difference.

“VENOM,” AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 300 MAY 1988 Hello readers! I was originally planning to do a review on a Supermanstory line for this
The 300 issue of Amazing Spider-Man week but since the Venom movie is coming out I felt it was appropriate to cover the first appearance of the character. Venom first appeared in the seminal 300 issue of Amazing Spider-Man in May of 1988. The black costume first appeared in issue 252 of Amazing Spider-Man in May of 1984. The symbiote had been found by Spider-Man on the alien Battleworld during the events of Secret Wars. After a battle in which his costume was torn he was directed to a room that had a machine that could repair it. Upon using the machine a black substance covers his body forming the iconic black costume. Thinking it was just made of a high-tech alien material that could mimic any clothing he thought of as well as never running out of webbing Peter wore the costume for a good while. However, while he would sleep at night the symbiote would take over his body and go out to fight crime without Peter knowing. This effect left Peter exhausted and irritable and would go on for many months until Peter finally decided to have Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four to study it in issue 258 in November of 1984. Spidy’s first encounter with the symbiote fromSecret Wars 8
After conducting a series of tests Mr. Fantastic discovered that the suit was a living symbiote that was trying to permanently bond with Peter. Wanting to get the symbiote off him as quick as possible Peter tried to force the costume off of him but it was not obeying his mental commands. Fortunately the power of the Human Torch and Dr. Richard’s sonic gun was able to drive the symbiote off of him as it is vulnerable to sonics and fire. Wishing to study it further Dr. Richards placed the symbiote in a container and kept it in his lab. In the meantime Peter not wanting anything more to do with the symbiote would wear a regular version of the black costume made by his then girlfriend Felicia Hardy the Black Cat. Eventually the symbiote was able to escape from the Fantastic Four’s headquarters and made its way to Peter’s apartment. Disguising itself as some spare clothes the suit tried to bond again with Peter in the first issue of Web of Spider-Man in April 1985. Not knowing what else to do Peter with a lot of resistance from the symbiote managed to take it to a nearby church bell tower. Using the bells of the tower Peter used the sonic frequencies to injure the symbiote who in a last moment saved Peter from the bells and disappeared for good or so everyone thought. Poor MJ terrified after encountering Venom This comic starts off where the last issue left off with Mary Jane scared to death after she had come home and encountered Venom sitting in their apartment. When Peter comes home finding his wife in a state of shock she is even more spooked since he is wearing his black costume. After she calms down she explains what had happen and Peter is able to determine that the symbiote has returned but doesn’t know who it had bonded with. Saying that she can’t stay in their Chealsea apartment the two of them stay the night in a hotel. We are then shown Venom returning to his lair and get our first glimpse of Eddie Brock who spends his spare time lifting weights and monologuing about his plans for Spider-Man.Oh my
The next day Mary Jane tells Peter that she got them a fancy new apartment that they can look at later and decide if they want to take it or not. This comes as a welcome blessing as the two of them have been trying to find a new place to live for awhile now. While out doing errands to prepare for their eventual move Peter drops by the Fantastic Four’s headquarters and picks up Mr. Fantastic’s sonic gun as he knows that the symbiote is weak against it. While looking at the luxury condo Peter and MJ agree to take it. Later that night we switch to Eddie Brock hanging out at the same church where Peter had used the bells to drive off the symbiote. When confronted by a young cop who thinks he has been stealing from the poor box, Venom makes his first kill without hesitation stating that it is necessary as nothing will stand in his way (Wow way to overreact there Eddie! You could of just knocked the dude out or something not straight up murder the poor guy in cold blood. I find it ironic that Venom always stresses about protecting innocents but will still murder them, but oh well this shows that he means business and is a total psychopath) The next day Peter and MJ enlist the help of all their friends to helpthem move. (Wow
Venom makes his first kill they sure wasted no time in moving right away) After having everything move everyone takes a break to eat but Peter has to make a quick exit as he spots Venom swinging by. Moving very fast Spidy is able to catch up with Venom and follows him into a run down building. Thinking that he has the drop on him Spidy enters the building but is caught by surprise when Venom attacks. Unable to reach the sonic gun Spidy stalls for time by asking who he is. Venom gives his name and states that he is named so for he had to write venomous articles for the tabloid rags. (Not the most original reason for him to be named such but oh well) When Venom reveals that he is Eddie Brock he recalls how he came to be Venom. Spider-Man’s first encounter with Venom Eddie had been a newspaper reporter for the _Daily Globe_ and had previously written a series of articles on the Sin Eater, a mass murder who had been terrorizing the city. Getting high praise from his bosses and the journalist community, Eddie continued to write his articles that very accurately described the killers methods. Eddie had been using information obtained from a man named Emil Gregg who claimed he was the Sin Eater. Eddie eventually revealed his source to the police who arrested Emil. However, Emil was proven to be innocent when Spider-Man caught the real Sin Eater and revealed it to be Stanley Carter. Emil was proven to be a compulsive confessor and had been Carter’s neighbor who overheard his ranting and plotting of his murders and thought that they were voices in his head. When it was revealed that his stories were fake and just the ravings of a lunatic Eddie was fired from his job and his reputation as a reporter was tarnished. Eddie hated Spider-Man for proving his story false and blamed him for everything that had gone wrong in his life. Unable to find respectable work Eddie tried working out as a stress reliever but it did not help and he turned to suicide and had been at the church when Peter drove off the symbiote previously. The symbiote sensed Eddie’s hatred of Spider-Man and bonded with him to form Venom! (You think Eddie would place the blame on Emil as he had been the one lying to him but nope much easier to go after Spider-Man) While Venom was busy telling his story Spidy had been slowly inchinghis way to get the
Eddie’s transformation into Venom sonic gun but Venom notices at the last moment and attacks. Spider-Man realizes that he is no match for Venom as he does not trigger his Spider-Sense and he is a lot stronger than Spidy. (This is due to the symbiote granting Eddie the same powers as Spidy coupled with Eddie’s own immense strength) It isn’t until Spidy hits Venom with a steel girder does he manage to get a hold of the sonic gun and blast the symbiote with it. However, he realizes that the symbiote is permanently bonded with Eddie and that there is no way to get rid of it without killing Eddie. Not sure what to do Spider-Man tries to flea but Venom comes to and snags him with his webbing and knocks him out cold. When Spidy comes to he find that he is webbed up to the inside of a church bell. Venom dressed as a priest says it is fitting that Peter will be killed by the very bell that he had used to try to killthe symbiote.
Spider-Man trapped in Venom’s web Venom leaves Spidy behind knowing that the church bells would hurt him but he will return to check on his remains. With only moments to act before he is crushed by the bell clanger Spidy manages to wrench one hand free of the webbing and is able to grab onto the clanger to pull him out of the web. Venom notices that there hasn’t been any screaming and realizes something is wrong and confronts Spidy before he can get away. When avoiding Venom’s attacks Spidy remembers that the symbiote would make the webbing from itself and so it regenerates it over time. Thinking that since Venom had used a lot of webbing to web Spider-Man to the bell he must be running low. Spidy goes to the top of the church and continues to knock Venom off the building forcing him to keep using his webbing until he runs out and he falls to the street below and is knocked out cold. A quick phone call later and the next we see of Venom he is in a containment cell at the Fantastic Four headquarters who will hold him until he is transported to the Vault. (A highly advanced prison for super criminals) When the webslinger returns home later that night and tells MJ that Venom won’t bother them anymore she is relieved but says that she won’t feel comfortable with Peter wearing the black suit anymore. Thinking that wearing the same suit as a crazy psychopath Peter tosses it his suit into the fire and dons his red and blue classic suit once more.Report this ad
This issue is a classic and is a pivotal issue for the Spider-Man mythos. The artwork is Spider-Man in his classic red and blue once more phenomenal as it is done by Todd McFarlane who was the hottest artist in comics at the time. McFarlane’s Spider-Man is one of the best drawn ever as he draws him with a build that makes sense for one who can move and contort the way Spidy can. It is always funny to see Peter with a mullet but he looks okay for the most part. McFarlane’s Mary Jane is beautiful and his artwork really made me crush on the character as a kid. McFarlane’s artwork proved so popular that he was given his own Spider-Man comic series a few years later before he eventually left Marvel to help form Image Comics. With his first appearance Venom proved to be a very popular character among fans and would appear very frequently in the Spider-Man comics. Over the years Venom eventually got his own mini-series as he became more of a anti-hero and would drop his vendetta against Spider-Man for a time but would eventually break it. My only issue with the character is his really weak backstory and why he hates Spider-Man so much. I get the motive from the symbiote but not really from Eddie. Hating Spider-Man for capturing the real killer and proving that Eddie’s articles were false is a really flimsy excuse for his hatred. But then he is totally crazy so I guess that works. Venom was overused a lot in his early days and for awhile it seemed he would pop up in at least one of the many Spider-Man comics that were being published in the early 90’s every other month. Since his initial appearance Venom would spawn offspring symbiotes such as Carnage and Toxin since the alien can reproduce asexually. Over the years the symbiote would leave Brock and bond with other hosts but would eventually go back to Eddie. I would highly recommend this issue to anyone who is a fan of Spider-Man and especially if they like Venom. While this particular comic goes for a lot of money nowadays it has been republished in trade paperbacks that include the rest of Venom’s early appearances. With the new Venom movie coming out today it will be interesting to see how the character is done without Spider-Man.xyamuchax Bronze
