Below we have compiled 10 key sailing terms for beginners to learn before they join usSAILING TERMINOLOGY
Binnacle – strong housing to protect the steering compass. Block – a pulley made of wood, metal or plastic. They emit a single long white flash every 10 seconds. Safe water marks are surrounded by deep water and act as the waypoint between open ocean sailing and pilotage into a shallower area. WHY YOU NEED A SAILING LOGBOOK A sailing logbook will prove your experience if you would like to charter a yacht, or enroll on another certification course. It’s like a boating passport! The RYA Yachtmaster Scheme Syllabus & Logbook (2016 edition) also provides up-to-date information about the structure and content of practical and shorebased courses, for bothsail and
SPINNAKER TIPS: HOW TO FLY A SPINNAKER Continuing from our introduction to spinnakers, we take a step-by-step look at how to prepare, raise and fly a spinnaker. These spinnaker tips should make your first time easier, but remember that ongoing practice is an important part of crew training for racing or cruising. HOW TO TRIM THE MAINSAIL The mainsheet, kicker and traveller are used to control and trim the mainsail. To alter the sail angle you adjust these based on the wind and the amount of twist in the sail. Twist is judged by watching the way the telltales stream out from the leech (outer edge of the sail) or by looking up the leech. This shows whether the head of the sail is BOAT HANDLING BASICS: PROPELLERS, RUDDERS AND PROPWALK Rudders. The rudder needs water to flow over it to enable you to steer the boat. This can be achieved in three main ways: a) The boat needs to be in motion. b) Tidal water is running across the rudder, or. c) Prop wash from the propeller flows over it. The rudders on yachts are large which means you can steer and turn at slow speeds. ANTIFOULING YOUR BOAT? BOTTOM PAINTING TIPS! Antifouling paint (also called bottom paint) is a layer of paint that is applied to the area on and below the waterline. It stops aquatic organisms, such as barnacles and weeds, from growing on your boat. Originally, the paint was made from tin, but this proved to be bad forthe environment.
10 DELICIOUS CARIBBEAN FRUITS TO TRY ON YOUR SAILING VACATION 9. Golden Apple. The golden apple is an oval, medium-sized, green Caribbean fruit that grows on a tree. The flesh tastes like a mango crossed with a pineapple, making this a wonderful fruit to use in juices, smoothies, chutneys and preserves. Generally a rope is not called a rope! Let us explain on board a sailing yacht, rope is the term used to describe the material used to make the lines. If a length of rope has a set purpose, for example adjusting the sails, it is called a line . Each separate line will have its own special name to describe the job it does. WHAT TO PUT IN A GRAB BAG A grab bag needs to be completely waterproof with the ability to float. A roll-top dry bag is adequate, or a rigid flare canister. It is a good idea to have a line attached to the grab bag so it can be tethered if necessary. There are a range of grab bags available to buy, or if you purchase a ready-made pack then it may include the grabbag too.
