THE COLLECTION
The Gothenburg Museum of Art has a collection of an international standing that includes art from the 15th century until today, mostly from Europe and the USA but with an emphasis on Nordic art. The collection of Nordic art from around the turn of the century 1900 isunique of its kind.
THE FRENCH COLLECTION French Impressionism, Postimpressionism and early Modernism are all well represented at the Gothenburg Museum of Art. Many of the works originated in the cultural milieu of Paris, hence the qualifier “French”, even though several of the artists have a non-French background. Impressionism is represented by Edgar Degas, Claude Monet,Camille

SEARCH THE COLLECTION Search the Collection is a searchable catalogue of the collection of the Gothenburg Museum of Art that is accessible on the internet. The collection comprises close to 70 000 artworks in various techniques. At present, about 20 000 of them are registered in the museum’s internal art database.SWEDISH MODERNISM
Modernism had its breakthrough in Swedish art in 1909, when Swedish pupils of the French Fauvist Henri Matisse made their debut in Stockholm. The Modernists used distorted shapes and forms and intensified colours to vibrant hues. The aim of their dynamic colour expressionism was to depict the modern world. NORDIC FIN DE SIÈCLE A blue Nordic light descended on fin de siècle painting, while artists directed their gazes towards an inner landscape imbued with melancholy. The Nordic fin de siècle painters are well represented at the Gothenburg Museum of Art. Here, art from the eighteenth century is shown alongside crafts, fashion, design and popular culture, in order to let visual expressions from different periods of time clash against each other, creating friction and new perspectives.
