SIMPSON'S DIVERSITY INDEX Simpson's Diversity Index is a measure of diversity which takes into account the number of species present, as well as the relative abundance of each species. As species richness and evenness increase, so diversity increases. The value of D ranges between 0 and 1. With this index, 1 represents infinite diversity and 0, no diversity. DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION MODEL Like all models, the demographic transition model has its limitations. It failed to consider, or to predict, several factors and events: 1 Birth rates in several MEDCs have fallen below death rates (Germany, Sweden). This has caused, for the first time, a population decline which suggests that perhaps the model should have a fifth stage added TOURISM COSTS AND BENEFITS Tourism Costs and Benefits. Costs. OFFLINE MOBILE MAP DATA PLOTTING APP FOR GOOGLE ANDROID AND APPLE IOS Our Offline Mobile Map Data Plotting App will shortly be available for download on Google Android and Apple iOS mobile (iPad, iPhone) operating systems. This enables users to create data maps in the field, using geo-located map markers supporting colour shading, text, numerical (decimal) data and images. Editable worksheets allowing multiple data inputs for any location are provided in the app as anoptional feature.
The map image with location markers and visible data inputs can be downloaded from Android operating systems (or from iTunes for iOS) for direct insertion in a document, printing, or the creation of overlays and further processing. The app is designed to be easy to use and self-explanatory. For most students, a short demonstration is all that is required to be able to use it independently in the field for the first time. Offline Map App Data Plotting Example INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION We have a range of itinerary options for AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas that allow schools to complete the four days of fieldwork required for the A level Independent Investigation. We provide support for students to independently prepare their research question and sampling strategies in advance of their visit to Barcelona. If time allows, students can pilot their investigation on their arrival day, by visiting their chosen study area. AQA Independent Investigationitinerary

A LEVEL REVISION COURSES U6 Geography Students from Xaverian College took another step closer to their exam by spending a week in January studying and interpreting the Barcelona landscape in preparation for their research paper. Xaverian College has been running U6 trips to Barcelona for several years all of which have proven successful in terms of grades and students enjoyment. Xaverian College U6 Geography Revision EDEXCEL IGCSE GEOGRAPHY Our Geography Fieldwork opportunities for Edexcel IGCSE cover the fieldwork requirements and provide knowledge and understanding of essential syllabus content. The field studies are supported by our IGCSE Geography Fieldwork Opportunities Handbook.Edexcel IGCSEGeography Fieldwork
WORD CLOUD PLACES AND BRANDS Our new spin-off website WordCloudIt.com generates Word Clouds for places, names and brands from an analysis of Search Engine results. Places, names and brands can be experienced in different ways by different groups of people and a WordCloudIt.com analysis gives a statistical guide to how we perceive, use and connect to them. WHY BARCELONA?
The Barcelona area offers a range of settings for geography fieldwork unrivalled in Europe. The city of Barcelona presents a fascinating case study of many of the major themes of urban growth and development. Field studies in the unspoiled National Parks that surround the city include coastal management, river processes, dune ecosystems, limestone and volcanic landscapes. Field Study Centre informationACCOMMODATION
We offer a variety of accommodation options for groups attending our field study courses. The Artur Martorell Rural Lodge in Calafell has purpose-built facilities and accommodation for educational study group and lies at the lower end of the budget range. Many groups prefer hotel accommodation, and the Hotel Piccadilly located in Sitges, one of Spain's most attractive, cosmopolitan and prestigious resorts, is a very popular choice. Accommodation BARCELONA CRIME MAP 2016 The Crime Map of Barcelona shows the highest crime occurs in the city's Old Town (Ciutat Vella) district, which includes El Raval. There were 40 crimes per 100 inhabitants in 2016, from an analysis of the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) data. These are the inner city districts that receive more than 30 million tourists every year, triggering the high crime rate per inhabitant.Barcelona Crime Map
SPAIN'S RURAL DEPOPULATION CRISIS The demographic crisis in Spain is worsening. A recent report 'Población y despoblación en España 2016' concludes that more than half of Spain's towns and villages carry a very high to moderate risk of being completely depopulated in the medium and long term. The vast majority of these face extinction as they suffer the continuous ageing of their population with few if any births. Rural Depopulation inSpain 2016
