INDUCTION OF LABOUR
Our medical advisers do not recommend induction for anyone as a way of combating GBS infection in babies. Carrying GBS, or your baby being at raised risk of GBS infection is not a reason to be induced. If you are known to carry GBS and your waters break before labour starts, youshould be offered
AFTER YOUR BABY IS BORN Most babies who develop group B Strep infection become unwell in the first week of life, usually within 12 to 24 hours of birth.This is known as early-onset group B Strep (EOGBS) infection.Most of these EOGBS infections may be prevented with intravenous antibiotics given in labour to mothers who are carrying group B Strep or who have other recognised risk factors. Where errors do occur, it is often a system rather than an individual CHANGING RATES OF GBS INFECTION IN BABIES Increasing incidence of group B Strep infections in babies in the UK and Republic of Ireland. The latest enhanced survey of the incidence of group B Strep infection reports a rise of 51% in the number of group B Strep infections in babies aged 0-90 days (and a 31% rise in the rate per 1,000 live births) in the UK and Republic of Ireland in the 13-month surveillance period during 2014-5 MASON - GROUP B STREP SUPPORT Mason’s mum Kimberley writes, “I was 17 years old when I went in for a small bleed at 35 weeks’ pregnant. I got checked out and had a swab done everything was fine and baby was happy and healthy. The following week or so I got a letter through the post saying I had tested positive for group B Strep and an info leaflet explaining allabout GBS.
CAESAREAN SECTIONS
Caesarean sections are not recommended as a means of preventing group B Strep infection in babies since they don’t eliminate the risk (though they do reduce it) and they pose their own risks for mothers and their babies. All women having a Caesarean section should receive broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics at the time of the operation SYMPTOMS OF GROUP B STREP INFECTION IN BABIES Most early-onset GBS infections show symptoms within the first 12 hours after birth so will often be identified at the maternity unit. Babies can be exposed to GBS around birth when Mum, usually unknowingly, is carrying the bacteria. The following day I was back at the hospital for 6 am and Hugo had turned a corner (I had left my expressed milk and he’d been fed through the tube overnight). The lumbar puncture came back clear; phew, no meningitis but yes, sepsis – late-onset GBS infection. The doctors praised us for our quick reaction to Hugo's unusual symptoms and said that we had, in essence, saved him from contracting meningitis and undoubtedly his life.Read Hugo's story
