I love dock/big fish stories. Here's one. My friend Curtis was scouting out a new six-weight down at the lodge dock. The weather was pretty sleety, but by Plumber Dan's calendar, it was a "black fish day" -- meaning we had high hopes, despite the sleet. IT'S ON (FOREST) FIRE... Tie all the way to the bend, and then fasten 4-6 pheasant tail fibers as a tail. The tail should be longer than the hook shank. Wrap thread 2/3rds up the hook shank (1/3 behind eye) and tie in a small clump of stacked deer hair. To do this, you want to push the clump of deer hair over the hook shank (in effect, around the hook shank). FORTNIGHTLY FLY: CDC HENDRICKSON PARACHUTE Fortnightly Fly: CDC Hendrickson Parachute. This opens in a new window. Tying parachutes with soft materials for posts, such as CDC or turkey flats, can be pretty frustrating. Anyway, Curtis was whipping BEAVER ATTACK (AND THE WILDNESS OF SPRING) Far up in the hills, miles away from any river, I saw a brown blob on the side of the road. It was a beaver, standing on one of the last patches of snow. A beaver! A big one, light brown, big-headed, flat tailed. I got out of the truck, and asked the beaver what it wasdoing.

In some stretches the water temperatures were warm enough for the bugs, but the fish didn’t really respond. In other reaches, the trout were all overthem, including in

EVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT Every day is different. Yesterday had one of those socked-in hendrickson afternoons. You know the type: warm enough for them to hatch, too cold for them to dry their wings. In some stretches the water temperatures were warm enough for the bugs, but the fish didn’t really respond. In other reaches, the trout were all overthem, including in

Tie all the way to the bend, and then fasten 4-6 pheasant tail fibers as a tail. The tail should be longer than the hook shank. Wrap thread 2/3rds up the hook shank (1/3 behind eye) and tie in a small clump of stacked deer hair. EVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT Every day is different. Yesterday had one of those socked-in hendrickson afternoons. You know the type: warm enough for them to hatch, too cold for them to dry their wings. In some stretches the water temperatures were warm enough for the bugs, but the fish didn’t really respond. In other reaches, the trout were all overthem, including in

Tie all the way to the bend, and then fasten 4-6 pheasant tail fibers as a tail. The tail should be longer than the hook shank. Wrap thread 2/3rds up the hook shank (1/3 behind eye) and tie in a small clump of stacked deer hair. To do this, you want to push the clump of deer hair over the hook shank (in effect, around the hook shank). FORTNIGHTLY FLY: CDC HENDRICKSON PARACHUTE Fortnightly Fly: CDC Hendrickson Parachute.
