CONFUSED ABOUT HORTICULTURAL "GRIT"! Messages: 48,109. Gender: Male. Ratings: +100,795. It's really all about putting grit into marketing categories, Nick. I use a lot of potting grit in my compost mix but, when at the Nursery, have problems seeing a difference between sacks of "horticultural grit", "potting grit", and Alpine Grit" and usually find the size of the differentnamed

helleborus resent disturbance, and can take 2 years to settle down, keep as much soil round the plant you are digging up, the best time to do this is autumn, or when just coming into growth in the spring.. summer is not recommended..I usually move any when the leaves start to drop off the trees, and never lost one yet..NEW LAWN - PATCHY??
Apr 15, 2005. Messages: 6. Ratings: +0. Hi all, seeded a new lawn about 7 weeks ago, it's been growing for the past 4 weeks and from certain angles now looks green all over and about 3 inches high, from above though it's very patchy with areas with little or no growth, isthis normal?
WASHING UP LIQUID, WHAT STRENGTH? I use Stergene rather than washing up liquid, I bought one bottle a couple of years ago specifically for washing the bugs off my beans etc. Stergene is pure soap (the same but much cheaper than Horticultural soap). Mix up 1 teaspoonful of Stergene in 1 pint of water, the exact volume is not too important. KILLING LEYLANDII ROOTS 3,860. Gender: Male. Location: North Tyneside/South Northumberland. Ratings: +1,663. A neighbour is cutting down her hedge of Leylandii. Someone already pruned it to 4' from 12'+ and the centre 2' is dead although 6" each side is thriving. PAINTING TERRACOTTA POTS? Prime the pot first with a mixture of water and PVA glue (think the ratio is 10:1) I will be using exterior paint on mine but won't be stencilling them just using two colours (one for the lip, one for the body). KILLING TREES USING COPPER NAILS? My Local Authority's arboriculturalist used to find copper nails in protected trees that were in the way of proposed developments and some of them were in a bad way, but the perpetrators could well have been using additional means such as concealed drilling, Glyphosate/Copper Sulphate/Ammonium Sulphamate/Etc., then plugging the hole and that could have been responsible. IS NEEM ILLEGAL IN THE UK? Zone 8b. Ratings: +92,180. As far as I know, Neem oil is not illegal. I think that they say that it's illegal to use azadirachtin in pesticides. This is a totally different thing than using it for humans. There are many puzzling things with regard to the rules for pesticides ('pesticides' is the catch all word for any chemical ormixture that

IS MY PASSION FLOWER DEAD? Ratings: +510. I bought a passion flower last year, towards the end of the summer. It was very late to get going, and if memory serves, it flowered in December! However, it now looks completely dead. It seemed to be doing quite well, we had a mild winter, and it's in a south facing spot, getting plenty of sunshine. But no signs of life so far. SULPHATE OF IRON VS SEQUESTERED IRON It is in a form easily taken up by plants. Sulphate of iron is completely different and used for greening up lawns, killing moss, and acidifying soil. Applying sulphate of iron will make no difference to chlorosis/ yellowing . You can still use sequestered iron now; apply again in spring. By the way, applying epsom salts is a cheap and quick KILL THE MOSS B4 I SCARIFY? yes, put LAWN SAND on first with a cyclone spreader is best, leave for a good month, the lawn will go nearly black, this is the moss dying, then scarify in a criss cross method, up and down then side to side. leave another month, put on a good LAWN WEED & FEED with the spreader in the same way as before. repeat this each year. SENETTI INFO PLEASE! Answer : It is possible in theory, but there is a high risk that the plants will developed various diseases following the end of the growth period (Autumn), and this will not give a satisfactory result. It is a much better idea to throw the old plants on the compost heap, and to IS HORTICULTURAL SAND THE SAME AS SHARP SAND? Ratings: +149. As Tee Gee has pointed out, it's all dependant on where the sharp sand is from. Horticultural sand is more or less guaranteed to be free of lime and salt. But the sharp sand is so much cheaper that it's worth the extra effort of giving it a wash in a WILL EXISTING GRASS GROW THROUGH LAYER OF TOPSOIL Grasses are green plants and they contain chlorophyll which is the material that gives the plant their green colour. Chlorophyll allows green plants to undergo Photosynthesis which is the process plants form the food material they need. Photo is light. Synthesis means putting together. In the case of the grass plant the covering of soil CREOSOTE - BEST SUBSTITUE? Gender: Male. Ratings: +100,809. Hi Boots, actually it is still available albeit in a substitute form known as Creocote. It's available in dark brown and light brown. It's around £10.40p a can at Wilko's and, if you've got one near you, at Charlies at around 6.60p. To be honest, I can't see the difference between Creosote andCreocote
WHERE CAN I GET SODIUM CHLORATE? My partner was spring-cleaning out kitchen cupbaords and under tyhe sink was - you guessed it! - 1KG of sodium chlorate - price £2.99. It frightens me to consider using it knowing I will never be able to get any more. millwall40, Apr 12, 2010. #15 Quote in Conversation. HOW CAN I GET RID OF A FIR TREE? I don't want to get rid of the fir tree but it was planted 10 years ago as a tiny shoot and no-one imagined it would now be a 6 foot monster. It's in a triangle of earth in the midst of paving in front of the house and the paving is now cracked and rising, and also some of the porch masonry is FERROUS SULPHATE DOSAGE FOR KILLING MOSS It is a nice shade of green after all. Watering can 9 litres = 12 sq m ( fanning can from side to side = 2 metres walk slowly forward = 6 metres approx ) Sulphate of iron as a moss kill = 4 to 5 gm / sq m. Dosage per watering can 40-50 gm.LOG IN OR SIGN UP
