HOW TO GROW AND USE IRESINE Iresine is also fairly tolerant when it comes to soil. They prefer free draining, moist soils for best growth, however I have seen them growing in sand, puggy clay and in low-lying areas that flood. To get the best from your plants, prepare the soil incorporating organicmatter and mulch.
PLANTS FOR A SOUTH-FACING GARDEN Liliums, begonias, even dahlias for autumn colour are possibilities for a south-facing garden, as are some herbaceous perennials such as eryngiums. I even grew three Echium simplex a couple of years ago only a metre from my front veranda – an area which is now home to a new, empty garden bed, just waiting to be planted out. HOW SOIL DRAINAGE WORKS: IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK Water moves in soils by surface tension, so where one soil particle touches another, the water will spread. If below the soil particle is a huge void – like the air outside the bottom of a pot, or, in Richard’s case, both the layer of weed mat and the layer of coarse blue metal – which have huge voids compared to the much more finely textured soil above them – the water won’t ‘fall TOP 10 PLANTS FOR SUBTROPICAL SHADE Finding the right plants to grow in a shady spot is a common challenge, but there are far more choices than you think. Here’s a bunch of my favourite subtropical beauties to get you started: begonia, bromeliads, anthurium, clivia, blue ginger, Malaysian orchid, caladium, zebra plant, Brazilian plume flower and bat flower. HOW TO PRUNE GROUND COVERS & GRASSY PLANTS To avoid dead plants, you can prune in a two-step process. Cut all but about 10% of the leaves back just above the ground, leaving a few on one side longer. In a few weeks after the rest of the plant has started to reshoot, come back and trim the last few leaves off to theground.
HOW TO STOP VEGGIES AND HERBS BOLTING TO SEED 5. Mulch heat-sensitive herbs and vegetables. Some plants like coriander/cilantro) and broccoli will bolt to seed if its roots get hot, so a mulch layer will keep it cooler and the desired heads forming . Cauliflower starting to flower. CLIVIA – MY FAVOURITE PLANT! They are perennials in the Amaryllidaceae family, related to naked ladies and hippeastrums. There are only six actual clivia species, the best-known being Clivia miniata, mainly the orange one, usually grown in massed planting. They have shiny, dark green strap-like leaves, which grow from a central crown, sending out babies (pups) on theside.
HOW TO HAVE A GREY (GRAY), WEATHERED DECK After looking through lots of decking stain catalogues, we finally found Sikkens Cetol HLSe stain in ‘silver grey’. It’s not a regularly stocked colour so we had to order it in. These photos show two coats and, as you can see, the timber looks quite naturally weathered, rather than colour-stained. HOW TO PRUNE A MAGNOLIA, AND HOW NOT TO PRUNE A MAGNOLIA The trees in question were Magnolia x soulangeana, which is a deciduous, spring-flowering magnolia. It is a classy and beautiful small tree that grows to around 6m high and wide. In summer it is green and leafy but in autumn the leaves fall. NINE GARDEN DESIGN PROBLEMS AND HOW TO FIX THEM 7. A flat, uninteresting garden. Problem: Your garden is dead flat which looks look quite dull, and it has some drainage problems. Solution: Build up garden beds either as informal mounds to make an undulating surface, or with more formal constructed raised garden bedsand planters.

WISDOM FROM A PLANT WHISPERER Wisdom from a plant whisperer. Bernard Chapman. August 11, 2017. As a proud garden-variety (but trained!) horticulturist, who has tended gardens on Sydney’s leafy North Shore for almost thirty years, I have learnt a few things about my craft. Some of it has come to me by application on site, other gems have come from friends (often fellow HEDGE EXPERIMENTS WITH DAPHNE AND LEPTOSPERMUM Here’s a couple of photos that provided me with my inspiration. Or, this is the stage when I filleted my Cerignolas. 2. EVERY PLANT HAS A LIFESPAN AND NEEDS CARE IN OLD AGE Every plant has a lifespan and needs care in old age. Kate Wall. October 19, 2016. Yes it does happen. Like us, plants are living creatures and their days are numbered. For some their number of days may be a very large number, for others not so large, but regardless what that number is, no living thing is truly immortal. THE DANGERS OF MANGO SAP The sap can squirt out from the stem when the mango is pulled off the stem, reaching distances of several metres. If it hits the eyes, it creates a very painful sting. On unprotected skin, even people not normally allergic to anything will be affected by mango sap after a few days. The burns become unbearably itchy, exacerbated by the humid HOW TO PRUNE A MAGNOLIA, AND HOW NOT TO PRUNE A MAGNOLIA The trees in question were Magnolia x soulangeana, which is a deciduous, spring-flowering magnolia. It is a classy and beautiful small tree that grows to around 6m high and wide. If you want your maple taller, then encourage branching on top that is pointing up, and lighten those branches by removing shoots pointing downwards. If you want a wider plant, then prune at a point where a branch is pointing outwards in the direction you want to expand. NINE GARDEN DESIGN PROBLEMS AND HOW TO FIX THEM 7.
NEW ZEALAND’S TREASURE CHEST OF NATIVE PLANTS FOR HEDGES New Zealand has an amazing array of shrubby trees that fit the bill as hedging – examples are pittosporum, muehlenbeckia, myrtaceae, coprosma, myrsine, melicytus, corokia, conifers and many daisy family plants, all of which are readily available. Some of these have been used over a number of years for windbreaks but they and other species HOW TO BRINE BLACK OLIVES The basic olive brining process: 1. Thoroughly wash unblemished fruit (picked from the tree, never the ground) in clean, cold sterilised water. Slit fruit longitudinally, taking care not to cut the pip. Or, this is the stage when I filleted my Cerignolas. 2. HOW TO WIRE UP AN ESPALIER The rigging screw is at one end of each length. I unscrew it as far as possible minus a few turns before it comes undone completely, and then attach it to the eyelet. I then measure the distance between the jaw, and the eyelet at the other end of the wire, plus a few centimetres to allow for the doubling up of the swage at either end. HOW TO GROW SIAM TULIPS (CURCUMA) Many of these species have broad green leaves and appreciate a semi-shaded location. They also grow well in pots in the shadehouse. Siam tulips need full sun in subtropical climates. The Siam tulip has a thick, olive-green leaves and the plants form a cluster of stems and leaves usually 300 to 400 mm high. The flowers stand just above theleaves.
TYING UP BULB FOLIAGE Tying up bulb foliage. What do you do with ugly dying foliage on taller growing spent bulbs like jonquils and daffodils? As continuing photosynthesis in the leaves feeds the bulbs for next year’s flowers it’s not a good idea to cut the yellowing leaves right down, but it can look horribly tatty. Leaving large clumps of foliage also makes it HEDGE EXPERIMENTS WITH DAPHNE AND LEPTOSPERMUM Here’s a couple of photos that provided me with my inspiration.

STUNNING PERENNIAL AND SHRUB COMBINATIONS The contrast and the texture of the pieris, and leaves of the shrub hamamelis to the left and perennial Alchemilla mollis to lower right make a stunning combination. Looks good when it’s only foliage too. White peonies look amazing with this blue spruce. The second example are the amazingly beautiful peonies blooming in a client’s garden. HOW TO HAVE A GREY (GRAY), WEATHERED DECK Meantime I’d fallen in love with the silver-grey look, which suited our dark brick and grey trim house perfectly. A rich reddish or orange timber colour was going to strike a really jarring note, (as well as possibly being too dark and hot all over again) but when I did some research about the best way to refurbish the deck, they were all theimages I saw.

MAKING AUSTRALIAN GARDENS WITH A SENSE OF PLACE Stones, nick-named ‘Rocky’, progressed from working for Edna Walling to developing a garden design business of his own. If you want your maple taller, then encourage branching on top that is pointing up, and lighten those branches by removing shoots pointing downwards. If you want a wider plant, then prune at a point where a branch is pointing outwards in the direction you want to expand. HOW TO GROW TAMARILLO OR TREE TOMATO The tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea) must surely be the most under-rated and under-planted fruit tree in my region and yet it is unfussy, extremely fast-growing and bears delicious fruit (peel the rind after dunking in boiling water for 3 minutes, or halve fresh and scoop out the inside). The red cultivars are tart – ideal for preserves, pies, salads and desserts, whereas the orange onesGARDEN
