Well broke as in broken. These days everyone is broke ;) While I was kicking that infection I coughed a lozenge I was choking on into my molar and broke a piece MICROPHONE SETTINGS PROBLEMS IN MSN I noticed after a quick search that a lot of people have problems setting up their microphone to work properly with MSN/Live Messenger in Windows Vista. The solution is a lot simpler than you might think. You have to EXIT Messenger first then set up the default microphone settings in Vista's Control Panel. When you HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME Well I figured as long as I'm stuck at home bored to tears on my birthday, today was as good as any to start this thing. Some of you (probably most of you, or maybe I’m being cynical) will probably just want the code. Since I’m not a preachy type and laziness is the whole point of this shortcut in the first place, here is the method you need to add. Simply replace “$classname$” with the name of the class you are adding it to.

_Now you may be asking why I used “$classname$” instead of something like “MyClass” or “SomeClass”. This brings us to the next tip, Code Snippets

If you’re still a novice C# coder you may have wondered why this is. The answer, that gives you back this convenient shortcut to checking for not-equal-to null, is an implicit bool.

According to MSDN

, “an

implicit keyword is used to declare an implicit user-defined type conversion operator”. Now to someone just learning to use a little C# for scripting in Unity this might as well be medieval poetry in a foreign language. So lets break it down. _Keywords_ are read by the compiler and tell it what limits to place on a type or variable. The most common ones you are probably already used to using are public and private. The static keyword in our method means that this method can be used at any time without needing to be used on a variable of this “type”. _Operators_ are what we use to compare two values or modify one. The most common ones we use are “<,>,== and !=” which all return (or in other words perform a conversion to bool) a Boolean value

, (true or false).

Boolean is a _type_. Types are basically structs or classes. So a _user-defined type_ is simply a class you have created yourself. Well you may have seen an error before, when you forgot to precede a command with (ClassName) saying something similar to “Cannot implicitly convert type foo to type bar. An explicit conversion exists…”. What this means is the interpreter doesn’t know how to convert the class from one type into an equivalent value in the other

type.

Now if you are doing a check in an if() statement the interpreter is expecting a Boolean return value

(true or false),

normally we generate this with Boolean operators

, “<,>,,==,!=”

etc… and check one value against another. Checking for null values though is something we have to do frequently and typing

if ( myclass != null ) …over and over again can get a bit tedious even though it IS only an

extra 8 characters.

Now programmers by nature are at least a little lazy when typing, (though we like to call it “obsessed with efficiency”) because we have to do so much of it, so implicit operators like this can be a little seductive. In this particular instance, since the practice of adding this check is so common we can make it a habit with little concern. We should however use the explicit keyword in most other situations. I’ll get into why in a future blog post.

CALL OF DUTY MODS

Updated March 23rd, 2009 I’ve been working on MODs for Call of Duty: World at War the past couple of months and helping a lot of other modders out with their

problems.

There are two Mods being widely released this month… Nazi Zombies – Tower Defense Style This one started as a small mod by an unknown modder but after I teamed up with him has been taken to new heights. There are a lot of additions to the normal game and the style of play has been changed with batches of 4 normal levels followed by a "Boss" level. Nazi Zombies – Gambler’s Ruin This MOD cranks up the difficulty of the game and punishes players that try to cheat. It also adds a slew of power-ups and changes the dynamics so players are forced to gamble for random weapons rather than purchasing them in the environment. It’s been incredibly

popular in testing.

I’ve also joined the CustomCOD.com modding team and I’m doing a lot of developement on another new MOD as well.. it’s a surprise, but I’ll be looking for a couple of beta testers in April. Nazi Zombies – Overrun This is a minimod I did with another member of CustomCOD and tested with the whole staff so we managed to make, test and release it in 30 minutes on my birthday as part of my

birthday

celebrations, since I was stuck inside alone that day with a bad infection in both eyes. It’s just made from bits of code

copied from

the other mods I’m doing combined with some from a guy named Sparks that turned out to be a fantastic load of fun.

The zombies keep

coming at you relentlessly in one endless horde (Sparks bit) and there are a almost double the usual number of powerups added! I even

included

the source code so people learning to MOD with scripting could look through it and hopefully learn a thing or two.

I noticed after a quick search that a lot of people have problems setting up their microphone to work properly with MSN/Live Messenger in Windows Vista. The solution is a lot simpler than you might think. You have to EXIT Messenger _first_ then set up the default microphone settings in Vista’s Control Panel. When you launch Messenger afterwards.. go through the sound and video settings wizard and everything should be fine. It trips a lot of people up because with some sound drivers, none of the settings changes you do will have any effect while MSN is running. I’m guessing it probably loads your current settings when it launches and doesn’t update them. This will fix the “chipmunk” effect your microphone can have sometimes.

MOVING A PC

Well I figured I was overdue for an on-topic post too, so here goes. First of all a disclaimer.. If you blow your PC to kingdom come because you followed, didn’t follow or there was a typo or some god or other just felt like being pissed at you, it ain’t my fault.. follow these steps at your own

risk.

This is for anyone who is about to move and has a desktop PC to bring along, which would probably be most peple reading this. It’s very easy to damage a PC during a move, especially a gaming system. Here is a checklist to help you avoid a PC disaster.

PREPARATION

Before you pack:

* Backup everything you would bang your head against the wall for losing.. don’t forget settings for games you play and savegame

files!

* Get your hands on a roll of anti-static bubblewrap. (Staples – Business Depot carries it in Canada and the USA, outside of here you can get it in the mailroom supplies area of your local business supply

store)

* If you have the original boxes for your monitor(s) and printers, dig them out of the attic/basement/closet/storage room/wherever. * Pop in to your local mom and pop PC store and see if they have a spare box your case will fit in and a few anti-static bags * Make sure you have packing tape, twist ties or reusable cable ties, plenty of markers (You’ll be surprised how many run dry from use, being misplaced in the packing shuffle etc…), at least 2 more boxes than you think you will need, a #2 phillips head screwdriver, medium-large zip closure bags and a roll of white masking tape. * Did I mention backups? * Tell everyone to leave you alone for an hour or two and to ignore any swearing they might hear. * Print out a copy of this how-to so you can still read it after you

turn off the PC.

PACKING THE SYSTEM

(You backed everything you needed up right? ) Shut everything down, DON’T unplug any cables yet! Windows systems in particular can give you a million headaches on this one because most things that plug in to a USB port have drivers that end up being re-installed if you plug the cable into a different port which can sometimes cause conflicts. Grab a sheet of paper and do a rough sketch of the back of your PC and any other area’s of it that have a USB port, then number each one. Don’t forget ports that are built into your monitor, keyboard etc and any USB hubs if you have them. Now, lets start the first "fun" part.

For each cable:

* Attach a piece of masking tape to each end of the cable. * Label it with the peripheral/component it attaches to. * If it’s a USB cable, add the USB port number from the sketch you

made earlier.

* Loosely and neatly coil the cable and bind it with a twist-tie/cable tie, then put it in one of the zip lock bags. * Repeat until you have all the cables packed away. (If you are comfortable opening your PC case, save the power cable for the PC for

the next step)

* Put your little sketch in a zip lock bag with a copy of this how-to and masking tape it to the side of your computer case. * Get some fresh air and chase away the purple fairies from the

marker fumes.

Skip this section if you are not comfortable opening the PC case: * Remove the side panel, and lay your PC on it’s side on a flat work surface so that the CPU HSF is upright. * Make sure the HDDs , expansion cards, and optical drives are

securely mounted.

* Use a little anti-static bubble sheet to make sure the HSF and video card have some support. * Tape the PC power cable to the inside of the case (To help you stop yourself from just plugging it in and firing it up after the move without checking it first) * Close the case again Time to pack it up. Look at the back of the pc, and you should see a shape similar to one of the ones below, Lay the PC down on it’s side in the box as shown. This will mean the HSF is always upright and is less likely to come loose if your poor computer has a bumpy ride to

it’s new home.

Well I finally pulled the lead out of my butt and delved Facebook for a few of my friends and family in the wee hours last night. Haven’t seen or heard from some of my relatives in so long I could barely

recognize them.

Since summer is coming & I’m not 16 anymore, I figured I’d dust off some of my old passions this year that don’t involve a constant dance with death like my old cycling habits. After all I managed to get the bike last year and finish the season without a scratch, bruise, fracture, near death experience, ambulance ride or concussion which has to be a record for me in a summer where my bike doesn’t get stolen in the first week. Guess marriage and my 30’s has tamed my self destructive riding style. Well either that or fear of being in a cast or bandage for a few weeks while spending every waking moment hearing,”I told you so!” Have a good week everyone! Oooh yeah! Looking forward to this weekend when a friend and her husband are popping in for a visit. It’s been years! (For 3 years when I was 19 – 21, my own mother and my best friend both thought I was making up all my online female friends. They weren’t convinced until they actually met one or 2 of them. LOL ) And my wife says I’m

stubborn?

AIN’T BROKE YET!

Well… broke as in broken. These days everyone is broke While I was kicking that infection I coughed a lozenge I was choking

on

into my molar and broke a piece off… right down to the root and

right

in to the nerve. Of course it got infected too by the time I got to the dentist and the tooth couldn’t be saved either. Had to have an extraction right away to

ease

the pressure from the infection since the pain was intense! Oh yeah… and the tax refund is late On the bright side, things can’t

get much

worse, can they? I DID get a free wheelchair so when the swelling in

my

ankles is too bad for me to walk I can still get some fresh air. I

feel

like a git in that thing though, now if I was still driving and it got me the free parking sticker, that would be different. Been keeping busy helping a couple of people fix their Facebook and myspace pics and made at least 1 friend in the bargain. I also helped

a

couple of other poor broke saps fix their computers for nothing or

next

to it.

Wifey is taking off to her parents place up north for a couple of

days.

For all my fellow BF2142 addicts, there’s a new patch available on EALink – v1.25 it fixes more bugs than it adds so go for it. If anyone has some old PC equipment – 1.5 Ghz or faster – feel

free to

donate it and I’ll fix it and pass it along to someone broke or

broken

that needs one. I never seem to have trouble doing that with ones I find in the garbage. If you are a potential recipient and live in the GTA gimme a shout and I’ll add you to my list. First come first served… I’ve only got 12 names so far.
