Protection Grants. In 2001 Front Line Defenders launched its Protection Grants programme, to provide rapid and practical financial support to human rights defenders at risk. JUDICIAL HARASSMENT OF WINDEL BOLINGET Status: Judicial Harassment. About the situation. On 21 January 2021, human rights defender Windel Bolinget presented himself before the National Bureau of Investigation in Baguio City following the filing of a fabricated murder case against him. The human rights defender is keen to prove his innocence and to access protection in a climate BROTHERHOOD FOR DEMOCRACY The Brotherhood for Democracy was founded in 2013 as a loose association of activists and human rights defenders formerly imprisoned for their political beliefs. Dr. Nyanzi has been arrested and detained twice for her activism, in both cases for insulting the Ugandan president online. She was released from prison on February 20, 2020, after serving over a year in detention on charges of misuse of a computer and cyberbullying. The Ugandan government continues to limit freedom of expression and #ALGERIA | FRONT LINE DEFENDERS Human rights defenders have continued to be subjected to harassment, threats, physical attacks, arbitrary detention and legal proceedings. GLOBAL ANALYSIS 2018 Global Analysis 2018 details the physical assaults, defamation campaigns, digital security threats, judicial harassment, and gendered attacks faced by HRDs and women human rights defenders (WHRDs). December 2018 marked the 20th Anniversary of the HRD Declaration and the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but HRDs around the world continue to face lethal threats from state, non-state, and corporate actors in their peaceful struggles forrights.

Dispatches 2018 presents the work Front Line Defenders has undertaken around the world for the protection and security of human rights defenders at risk in 2018, including the impact of grants, training, advocacy, visibility, rest & respite and other programs. In 2018, Front Line Defenders joined with HRDs in marking the 20th Anniversary of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders and the 70th Anniversary of the Universary Declaration of Human Rights; at the 2018 Human Rights Defenders World Summit in Paris, Front Line Defenders joined with other international human rights organisations to host over 150 HRDs from around the world, resulting in the development of an Action Plan with specific recommendations to states, coporations and other stakeholders on the protection of and support for HRDs. At the end of this auspicious year, Front Line Defenders was named one of the winners of the 2018 UN Prize in the Field of Human Rights, presented by the UN General Assembly President at a ceremony at UN Headquarters in New York. _Read Dispatches 2018_
