Or at least that’s what many people think, including those who have always lived here. L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS HAS A NEW VIKING-THEMED ESCAPE ROOM AND But my trip to the Great Northern Peninsula last week to FINALLY visit the L’Anse Aux Meadows UNESCO World Heritage Site just so happened to coincide with Escape Quest’s launch of an escape room. MEDIA - FREE CANDIE
As well as being the founder and writer of Free Candie, I’m a freelance writer for other online and print publications around the world. I’m also the Communications and Submissions Coordinator at the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival. I manage advertising campaigns, media partnerships, the Festival’s social media channels, and a good deal more. GUIDES - FREE CANDIE Guides. I’m a born and raised Newfoundlander now working my way around the world as a freelance writer. Over the past few years I’ve done a lot of extended travel in Greece, Ireland, and Germany. I’ve learned a thing or two along the way about location independence (and nope, it’s not all sunshine and lollipops and leprechauns). PLACES FREE CANDIE HAS VISITED Newfoundland, Canada You’ll currently find me stretching my location independent legs, renting a cute little apartment in Berlin, Germany. Part of the beauty of my work as a freelance writer is that I can take my job with me on my travels. As long as there’s good internetconnection, I’m
THE MOST PERFECT ROAD TRIP TO THE GREAT NORTHERN PENINSULA The Viking Trail. The drive from Rocky Harbour to St. Anthony along the Viking Trail is worth the trip itself. To the left: the sparkling blue waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence; to the right: lush rolling hills and mountains. The route mostly hugs the gulf, until you turn inland to reach St. Anthony. THE FRONT STOOP POOP STORY So this is bit of a cop-out, and really more of a post appropriate for a personal blog, but I just can’t pass up this story. May 2-4 weekend pretty much marks the beginning of summer. Either everyone goes camping, or somebody picks up 4 kegs and throws a bash. We wentwith the latter.
TAKE THIS HIKE: FATHER TROY’S TRAIL, FROM FLATROCK TO I hit the Father Troy’s Trail on Saturday with Maggie and Steve to complete the 8.6-kilometre route from Flatrock to Torbay. Being part of the East Coast Trail, it’s not a loop and so we had to park a car each at separate ends. 18 kilometres would have been silly. Start in Flatrock. It’s easier that way. HIKING THE SKERWINK TRAIL The Skerwink Trail. The Skerwink Trail begins in Trinity East, on the Bonavista Peninsula. Some things to know: It’s extremely easy to find, and the trail is very well marked. It’s a 5.3 kilometre loop. It’s a 3.5 hour drive from St. John’s (approximately) I’d rank it as “medium” difficulty — there are some steep climbs, but the HOW TO DO PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS How to do Prince Edward Island in Less than 24 Hours. EXPLORING NEWFOUNDLAND’S 300+ ABANDONED SETTLEMENTS Exploring the abandoned towns that were victims of the Resettlement act in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The last few nights I’ve been up until 2 a.m. scouring the Internet for information. The Milltown-Head of Bay d’Espoir Museum has some great info (I’ve lifted some of their photos, hope they don’t mind), and so does Memorial University. I WENT TO ONE OF THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE WORLD The full list: Papa New Guinea, the Bermuda Triangle, Fogo, and Hydra (Greece). Riley, Corbin, and I went in search of the trail that would take us to Brimstone Head. But as things are in rural Newfoundland, the signage was a bit off. We ended up in the wrong end of town, at Fogo Head. The view was intimidating. A straight staircase into thesky.
A FISH FRY AND CAMPING AT NESSLIN LAKE Idyllic. Last summer I camped at Nesslin Lake, next to Ness Creek, next to Big River, next to Alberta, in Saskatchewan. It’s like the Russian nesting dolls of the prairies. The site is a home to a number of campsites, a big glassy lake, and several yurt rentals. Ness Creek also plays host to the annuals Northern Lights Bluegrass Festival CAMPING IN AN OASIS: TERRA NOVA'S MOST UNIQUE A few weeks ago, my friend Renee and I packed up our camping gear (i.e. tossed it in the back of her car) and headed out for a weekend of camping at Terra Nova National Park.. We had booked one of the park’s Ôasis pods, the park’s newest camping offer for familiesor young couples.

THE REPUBLIC OF DOYLE SONG LIST: SEASON 2 Republic of Doyle is a pretty big deal in Newfoundland, and is usually the highlight of my Wednesday when I’m not doing other wild things, like organizing my sock drawer. I’ve been watching since episode 1 and I still get thrilled when I see them shooting on my street. I usually follow along on Twitter when a new episode airs, and more often than not, people will ask what the song REGRETS I HAVE ABOUT LIVING IN GERMANY Regrets I have about living in Germany. The thing about living in a foreign country is that the way you experience the country is entirely different than if you were travelling. (No shit, Sherlock. I’m so glad my three-week writer’s block has lifted long enough for me to write this drivel out for you.) I’ve been back in Canada for about≡
