FOREVER IN FIFTH GRADE: CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT & DISCIPLINE Bulletin boards are ready, name tags are in place, and pencils are sharpened. It's just in the nick of time, as school starts tomorrow! The first day of school, such an important day for setting the tone and expectations for the rest of the year and the topic for my next post in my Classroom Management & Discipline Series. FOREVER IN FIFTH GRADE: CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT & DISCIPLINE Classroom Management & Discipline Series - First Day of School Part 1. I'm back in my favorite chair up north after 40 plus hours working in my classroom over the last week or so. Everything there is just about done, so now I'm starting to work on the other list of to-do's that have to happen before the first day of school. FOREVER IN FIFTH GRADE: SWAT THE VOCAB! I love this idea! I was thinking about new ways to practice vocabulary and this is also a multi-sensory activity as well. It is a great way to assess whether student's know the vocabulary as well. FOREVER IN FIFTH GRADE: BACK 2 SCHOOL LINKY-BEHAVIOR Forever in Fifth Grade: Back 2 School Linky-Behavior Management. I'm linking up today with Mrs. D's Corner and Miss V's Busy Bees for a Back 2 School linky about behavior management. I have been teaching fifth grade now for 23 years and yet I still have those dreams every August. You know what I'm talking about, right? FOREVER IN FIFTH GRADE: FIVE FOR FRIDAY-I HAVE A DREAM! The game for this unit is one of my favorites, Hoop Shoot Review! It's a game you can easily adapt to any subject area. Here's how I do it: * Put students in groups of 4, and have them number off 1-4. Students will rotate being the recorder/shooter. * Set up a basket with a FOREVER IN FIFTH GRADE: USING HISTORICAL FICTION TO JUMP I was inspired by Jivey's Workshop Wednesday this week which is all about using historical fiction. I'm getting ready to start our first book club of the year using The Hidden Girl. It's an autobiography written by Lola Rein Kaufman, a Jewish Holocaust survivor. It's a fascinating and moving story, which makes for great book clubdiscussions.
FOREVER IN FIFTH GRADE: SHOW & TELL TUESDAY This goes under the heading, "Why didn't I ever think of that?" I have been using Words Their Way for a number of years now, and I really think it has been beneficial for my students, especially since I created my own note-taking forms and quizzes (Words Their Way Note-Taking Guides and Quizzes - Derivational Relations). One thing that has always driven me crazy is how long it takes for my FOREVER IN FIFTH GRADE: MARCH MADNESS READING MONTH For every 30 minutes read, your team earns 10 points. All the reading needs to be kept track on a reading log which is signed by a parent and turned in each Friday. I have students that are helping me total up the points each Friday, and another teacher is figuring out the points for the 4th grade. The points for each team are displayed inthe

FOREVER IN FIFTH GRADE: TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK Teacher Appreciation week begins on May 8 this year, so now's the time to plan how to tell the teachers you work with or those having an impact on your own children's lives how much you appreciate the time and effort it takes to do this difficult job. FOREVER IN FIFTH GRADE: USING HISTORICAL FICTION TO JUMP It's not the best picture, but you get the idea. I loved the discussion that we had throughout the book! It was interesting to hear who already had a lot of prior knowledge about the topic (one student brought up Jewish ghettos, wow!) and those who didn't have much at all (one student responded to another with, What's the Holocaust?). FOREVER IN FIFTH GRADE: SHOW & TELL TUESDAY My third Show & Tell was one of the fun activities I did with my students during our 12 Days Before School is Out. Need an easy gift idea for Mother's Day? Your kids will enjoy this special project that you can make as simple or as fancy as you like! for instructions on how to write one of these simple, five-lined poems. Here's an example of a Cinquain that one of my studentswrote:
Mommy
Considerate, creative Caring, loving, laughingTo moon and back
Mom
Type up the poems and copy them onto colorful scrap-booking paper. I put a border around the poems to dress them up a bit. You can turn this into a thoughtful card for mom or frame it for a special keepsake. I picked up frames at the dollar store and had my students make tissue paper flowers for another little special touch. I've had my students make these beautiful tissue paper flowers before and turn them into Mother's Day corsages! You can watch my instructional video on how to make these flowers by clicking here.

SHOW & TELL TUESDAY - DECEMBER It's the most hectic time of the year, so this will be a very quick Show & Tell Tuesday for me. I've got a honey bun cake to make for our ugly Christmas sweater breakfast tomorrow! We got the nicest surprise a couple weeks ago, when our neighbor kids brought us this beautiful wreath (with the card below attached) announcing, "This is just a random act of kindness!" It was a wonderful way for us to begin the holiday season! My mom was in the holiday spirit too when she was creating festive kerchiefs for all the dogs of the family. I don't know how much Emmitt appreciated the gesture as Barnaby tormented him by pulling his kerchief until he was finally able to rip it off then run around thehouse with it!
This goes under the heading, "Why didn't I ever think of that?" I have been using Words Their Way for a number of years now, and I really think it has been beneficial for my students, especially since I created my own note-taking forms and quizzes (Words Their Way Note-Taking Guides and Quizzes - Derivational Relations).
One thing that has always driven me crazy is how long it takes for my students to cut out the sort and the inevitable piles of words that end up all over the floor all week long. One of my colleagues told me that she has her students sort them by color instead, which has been working out perfectly for me this year. It is much quicker and doesn't make a huge mess, and I still send home extra sorts for my students to cut out at home. Now here's what you need to know to link up and share your Show &Tells!

SHOW & TELL TUESDAY - NOVEMBER I can't believe it's already time for the November edition of Show & Tell Tuesday! It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the year goesby!
This year I wanted to create a bulletin board for the basic facts test results. Our report card has a section under math where we have to report how well the students have mastered each of the four basic facts tests. They have to complete one hundred problems in a limited amount of time. I have my students keep graphs of their personal results in their math folders, but I also wanted a place in the room where they could see their growth. So, I added ledger sized graphs to my Basic Facts Bundle and created this bulletin board. I didn't want any student names on the graphs, so I just numbered each column. I give my students a number based on our alphabetizedclass list.
I wanted the graphs to be reusable from marking period to marking period, so I laminated them and bought some bright washi tape. I use the tape to show each student's progress. As the students' scores go up, I just add more to their column. At the end of the year, I can just peel all of the tape off and use the charts again next year. I was so inspired by a post I came across last summer from Diane at Fifth in the Middle about using drink mix containers for a name stick holder! You can see her original post by clicking on the picturebelow.
I put my spin on the idea and now have name stick holders, sharp and dull pencil cans, mystery motivator cans, and a coin drive can!Grab this freebie
to create your own!
Have to end with a picture of the doodles of the house. Wish I could be as relaxed as these guys while watching Michigan football! They aren't even bothered by all my yelling! Now here's what you need to know to link up and share your Show &Tells!
