GROWING FLAX
The Flax Council of Canada is a national organization which promotes Canadian flax and flax products for nutritional and industrial uses in domestic and international markets. Established in 1986 with full representation from all agricultural and industrial flax interests, the Flax Council promotes the advancement of flax and flax products. CHAPTER 6: WEED CONTROL Chapter 6 – PDF version. Download the PDF version of ‘Chapter 6: Weed Control’. Weeds can be a serious problem in flax if left uncontrolled. Because flax does not compete well with weeds, compared with other crops such as cereal grains, weeds have an excellent chance to develop in flax thereby reducing flax yield and seed quality. FLAX TIPS: SEEDING ADVICE Seeding Depth. Ideally, flax should be sown into moist soil, 1.0 to 1.5 inches deep with row spacing 6 to 8 inches. Flax seedlings are weaker and shallow seeding depth is more critical for vigourous emergence, however, too shallow and seeds may be prone to drought. Soil crusting, which impacts flax seedlings more when sown deeper, mayresult in

Chapter 8 – PDF version. Download the PDF version of ‘Chapter 8: Diseases’. Historically, fusarium wilt and rust have been considered major limiting factors in flax production in Western Canada. However, these two diseases have been effectively managed by multigenic resistance incorporated in all commercially registered flax varietiesin
CHAPTER 2: SEED AND SEEDING PRACTICES TIPS FOR USING WHOLE FLAX SEEDS Pre-treatment. Flax seeds can be soaked in water before use. Soak seeds for 10 minutes in warm water or for two hours in 20°C (70°F) water (although some bakers prefer to soak flax seeds overnight). After soaking, the water turns opaque and slightly viscose from the soluble fibre and gums found on the surface of the seed. FLAX TIPS: FERTILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR FLAX Flax Tips: Fertility Requirements for Flax. This document will review the current research on the effects of fertilizer practices and crop rotation on flax yield. To accurately manage soil fertility in your rotation, soil testing and consultation with your local agronomist isrecommended.

CHAPTER 2: SEED AND SEEDING PRACTICES For maximum yield, farmers should generally seed between 40 and 45 kg/ha (35 and 40 pounds/acre). If seedbed conditions are poor, slightly higher seeding rates may help ensure adequate stands. Seeding rate should be adjusted on the basis of seed size, percent germination and soil fertility. When optimal, higher plant populations can take RECIPES | FLAX COUNCIL OF CANADA Flax Replaces Oils. Flax seeds can replace the oil or shortening in a recipe because of its high oil content. Because flax does not compete well with weeds, compared with other crops such as cereal grains, weeds have an excellent chance to develop in flax thereby reducing flax yield and seed quality. FLAX TIPS: THRESHING AND STORING FLAX Storage of Tough or Damp Flax: For long-term storage, the recommended seed moisture for flax is below 10%. Flax at 10.1-13.5% moisture is considered “tough” and >13.5% moisture is “damp”. With higher seed moisture, risk increases for heating and spoilage in storage.
