For this reason, anyone experiencing a problem with their sense of smell should be seen by an ENT specialist with a dedicated interest in nose and sinus problems (Rhinologist) who listen to their history, examine the nose carefully with an endoscope and perform a smell test. PAROSMIA AND PHANTOSMIA Parosmia is the medical term for experiencing distortions of the sense of smell. Someone with parosmia may be able to detect odours, but the smell of certain things – or sometimes everything – is different, and often unpleasant. These unpleasant smells are often described as being like chemicals, burning, faeces, rotting flesh, mould.FIFTH SENSE

Who We Are. Fifth Sense was established in 2012 by Duncan Boak, who lost his sense of smell as the result of a severe head injury in 2005. Our #LetsTalkSmellAndTaste events were created to provide people a safe place to communicate their BRS CONSENSUS GUIDELINES The British Rhinological Society (BRS) and ENTUK have provided guidelines for treatments for people who have been affected by smell loss due to Covid-19. The panel ranked and classified suggested investigations and treatment options. The aim of the guidance is to provide evidence based recommendations for the most appropriate management of patients with Covid-19 related loss of smell. TREATMENT FOR ANOSMIA The treatment for anosmia will vary depending on the cause. Relax and slowly take short gentle sniffs (sometimes called bunny sniffs) – sniffing too hard, too quickly and too deeply is likely to result in you not being able to detect anything. 3. Repeat 2 or 3 more times, then rest for fiveminutes.
WHAT IS SMELL?
Smell is a very rarefied, esoteric experience. The dominance of vision in humans has greatly relegated our sense of smell and, even if it ever had a vocabulary, this is now long lost. The best we can do to describe a smell is to say that it is “like” or probably “a bit like” another smell.FIFTH SENSE

DANGER! – FIFTH SENSE Danger! loading Most of us are probably aware that smell is the primary sense for many animals. Take a dog, for example; its sense of smell is supposedly around a thousand times more powerful than our own, which is why we use them for tasks like finding drugs in airport luggage, or searching for survivors in the ruins created by anearthquake.
