Biography. Nicholas Felton is a designer, entrepreneur and artist whose work focuses on translating quotidian data into meaningful objects and experiences. He is the author of numerous personal annual reports that condense the events of a year into a tapestry of maps, graphs and statistics. The Elemental Project is an ongoing effort to depict each of the 118 known elements in 3d. Using the constraints of the period table requires learning new techniques; depicting gases, liquids and solids while focusing on the small qualities that differentiate one elementfrom another.
FELTRON: DAYTUM
In the spirit of the Annual Reports, Daytum was developed to allow anyone to quickly capture personal data and easily share the results.Members can count anything via the website or iPhone app and to date the site has captured over 5 million entries. Profile pages include a variety of charts, visualizations and colors that can be applied to customize the data representation.FELTRON: PHOTOVIZ
PhotoViz is a presentation, curriculum and book about the overlap between photography and data visualization. From a talk at Webstock, the concept matured into a class at NYU’s ITP before being formalized and published by Gestalten.PhotoViz argues that in a world overwhelmed with both data and photography, there is an increased need for both aggregating photos and for making data stories FELTRON: 2007 ANNUAL REPORT The 2007 Annual Report expands on the themes introduced in the previous two editions while expanding the document’s detail in several ways. Coffee consumption was noticeably absent until this year and allowed Nicholas to calculate that his daily habit was equivalent to nearly seven lethal doses of caffeine. Clients included The New York Times, NY Magazine, Wired, Time, The Wall Street Journal, GQ, Esquire, Metropolis and more. Facebook. As a core designer of Timeline, Nicholas helped to drive Facebook’s radical reimagining of the profile. Timeline required a structure that could showcase an entire life from the monumental to the mundane while preserving all of the original functionality. Reporter. Reporter is a self-tracking application for iPhone based on the idea that less is more. A system of infrequent measurements at random intervals allows the app to reveal insights with minimal effort. BikeCycle is a visualization of New York City’s bike sharing program. The application was commissioned by the MoMA Store as an exclusive component of their partnership with the interactive art screen company Framed.Using a year of data, the visualization replays activity in the system in real-time from the current day in 2014.FELTRON: TYPECON
Each year, the Society of Typographic Aficionados works with a designer to develop an identity for their annual TypeCon event. For the 2015 conference, Nicholas embarked on a typographic exploration through code. The result is a drawing application that explores the condensed concept while referencing traditions of sketched and filigree typography.FELTRON.COM

FELTRON: 2010 ANNUAL REPORT 2010 Annual Report. After losing his father in 2010, Nicholas poured through his calendars, passports, slides and mementos to create a data-biography of his life. The narrative of these artifacts starts in pre-war Berlin and criss-crosses the world over eighty-one years. By cataloging and compiling the details of these objects, a multi FELTRON: 2009 ANNUAL REPORT 2009 Annual Report. From parents to old friends to new acquaintances, everyone who had a “significant” encounter with Nicholas in 2009 received an invitation to contribute to that year’s Annual Report. Participants were handed a letterpressed business card with a URL and unique number leading to an online survey where they could record FELTRON: 2008 ANNUAL REPORT 2008 Annual Report. The 2008 Annual Report posits that the passage of a year can be measured not by time but by distance.
