READING NOOK RE-DO

I have a little nook in my house on GPark that is too small for just about anything.  A dining table fits, but no chairs.  It has a bright sunny window, but there is a window air conditioning that is an absolute necessity.  I am thinking I might change the area into a reading knook/bar area/bookcase.  Is it possible?  Not sure, but I decided to head over to Pinterest and I searched reading nook Here are some of my inspirations I am very happy the way my little nook turned out.  Here it is after a few tweaks and a trip to Big Lots.  Big Lots has really great deals on throw pillows ($12) and drapery panels and hardware ($75 for everything) and the rug ($15).  I already had my morning coffee and checked my email on the ipad and it was lovely. Anyway else have a longing for a reading nook?  I was willing to sacrifice a dining space for one, but I am cool with it.  We will see how I feel at Thanksgiving though. DATE STAMP OR LABEL: The chairs I found were early Herman Miller production – made in April of 1952 to be exact.  How do I know that? Because these early black HM chairs have date stamps on the bottom.  The date stamps is an easy way to authenticate early HM production. They were always done on the black aniline plywood chairs because the black color made it necessary to spray stencil on a date for it to show up. I believe the same is for the rare red aniline version of the chair. Not all of the natural wood (Rosewood, Birch, Walnut, Oak, Teak, Cherry, etc..) chairs had a date stamp applied. IF YOUR LUCKY THE CHAIRS MIGHT RETAIN A HERMAN MILLER FOIL LABEL, AN EXAMPLE OF ONE IS HERE.  (THE MODERN PRODUCTION CHAIRS, BEING PRODUCED BY HERMAN MILLER IN THE LAST 15 YEARS NOW USE A SMALL BLACK PLASTIC PLAQUE WITH THE HERMAN MILLER NAME ON IT.  THESE ARE NOT VINTAGE CHAIRS BUT ARE AT LEAST AUTHENTIC PRODUCTION. When people say “authentic chairs they mean produced by Herman Miller (or Vitra) the company that holds the license for the design. In the last decade plenty of Chinese companies have been imitating and copying this chair. When it comes to market value the knock off are virtually worthless and will stay that way.  (I despise the influx of cheap, inferior Chinese knock-offs.)

The Eames  Lounge Chair, officially titled Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671), were released in 1956 after years of development by designers Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company. It was the first chair the Eames designed for a high-end market. They are made of molded plywood and leather, and examples of these furnishings are part of the permanent collection of New York Museum of Modern Art. They are prized for comfort, aesthetics, and for the pioneering use of new materials and manufacturing methods. There is a decent used market for these chairs. Some collectors are willing to pay high prices for earlier chairs made with Brazilian Rosewood veneer, which is no longer available due to a worldwide embargo since 1992. Prices for original rosewood chairs have recently reached as much as $7,000 in auction. A new Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman starts at $3,200 for a Herman Miller model. In 2006, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the chair, Herman Miller released models using a sustainable Palisander Rosewood veneer.
