Anybody can put together a list of their picks for the greatest films ever made. Many have. In a rush of hubris and the desire for self-entertainment, I decided to join them. I figured that I'd certainly seen, loved and critically evaluated enough films in my many decades to take a stab at it. 1944 – ESSENTIALS OF CINEMA 1944 - The year when darkness crept into the American cinema and "film noir" became an established entity. Crime, anxiety, paranoia, cruel destiny. These are the things that classics are made of. -----THE ESSENTIALS----- DOUBLE INDEMNITY (Billy Wilder) Even though the Oscars for 1944 went to the feel-good GOING MY WAY, it is DOUBLE 1930 – ESSENTIALS OF CINEMA -----THE ESSENTIALS----- THE BIG TRAIL (Raoul Walsh) To see this epic western in all its restored glory, it becomes necessary (as I did) to re-evaluate all previous conceptions about the Western film, the early talkies, and the careers of both John Wayne and Raoul Walsh.Originally shot
1982 – ESSENTIALS OF CINEMA -----THE ESSENTIALS----- BLADE RUNNER (Ridley Scott) By now, you may have detected a certain prejudice on this site against certain genres (musicals, westerns) and a prejudice for others (sci-fi, horror, film noir). And so, some might consider it a glaring omission to exclude such films as STAGECOACH or SINGIN' IN THE RAIN. Mea culpa. 1953 – ESSENTIALS OF CINEMA -----THE ESSENTIALS----- Wow, what a year! 1940 – ESSENTIALS OF CINEMA -----THE ESSENTIALS----- THE GRAPES OF WRATH (John Ford) It has been noted that it seems odd that two staunch conservatives like producer Darryl Zanuck and director John Ford should collaborate on an American story of social injustice and economic inequality. But America was not as polarized in 1940 as it is today, and John 1961 – ESSENTIALS OF CINEMA -----THE ESSENTIALS----- LA NOTTE (Michelangelo Antonioni) The second in Antonioni's trilogy, and another stunner. I confess to being in awe each time I view it, as I marvel at the composition of the images, the emotional resonance between the characters (even though their "disconnect" is a major theme) and the purely cinematic way in 1968 – ESSENTIALS OF CINEMA -----THE ESSENTIALS----- NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (George Romero) The world needed this movie. To revitalize the horror genre, all it took was a low-budget black and white shocker shot in Pittsburgh with no-name actors and an unknown director. Everything worked. Its very limitations work in its favor. From the opening scene, the mood 1973 – ESSENTIALS OF CINEMA -----THE ESSENTIALS----- THE EXORCIST (William Friedkin) Ah, how the horror film got a shot in the arm with this one. It took William Friedkin to make evil believable again. Friedkin's directorial style, like his protagonists, are no-nonsense, head-on, confrontational. His heroes often have to confront demons, from within and without. And what more formidable 1975 – ESSENTIALS OF CINEMA -----THE ESSENTIALS----- DOG DAY AFTERNOON (Sidney Lumet) He was known as an "actor's director" and he worked with all of them, including Brando. Cutting his teeth on the early days of live television, Sidney Lumet (like John Frankenheimer) could shoot fast and loose.
