Extension cords should only be used on a temporary basis. ESFI OVERHEAD POWER LINE SAFETY Contact with overhead power lines is the leading cause of electrical fatalities for agricultural workers. Of the 1,001 reported power line contact incidents from 2003-2009, nearly 70% resulted in death. Luckily, these fatalities can be prevented by following these simple steps while on the job. ESFI: ARC FAULT CIRCUIT INTERRUPTER RECEPTACLES An arc-fault is a dangerous electrical problem caused by damaged, overheated, or stressed electrical wiring or devices. Arc-faults can occur when older wires become frayed or cracked, when a nail or screw damages a wire behind a wall, or when outlets or circuits are compromised. Consider all lines to be live and dangerous. Stay in place or inside your vehicle unless you see fire or smoke. Warn others to stay at least 35 feet away. Tell others not to approach vehicle, downed lines, or anything that may be in contact with downed lines. However, regardless of the gauge or rating of the cord, an extension cord is a temporary solution, and is not meant to be used as a long-term extension of your household’s electrical system.
