JEWISH BOOKS ON MY RADAR: JANUARY-JUNE 2021 It’s hopeless. I will never be caught up with all the reading that I want to do—not even within the subset of my reading that can be categorized as “reading of Jewish interest.”. And yet! I haven’t yet given up on assembling lists like this one, of brand-new (as in published this week) and soon-to-be-published titles on my radar for the first half of 2021. JEWISH SHORT STORIES: REFLECTIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS Jewish Short Stories: Reflections & Recommendations. Held for the first time entirely online, the recent Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) conference featured an array of superlative sessions. In one, during which veteran librarians shared tips for leading book clubs and similar groups, the subject of Jewish short stories came up. MIDWEEK NOTES FROM A PRACTICING WRITER Three quick updates from my desk. 1. I’ve been pretty busy lately with a lot of non-writing projects. But I can tell you that one highlight of my (amazing!) 30th college reunion this past weekend was poetry-related: My classmate Jenny Factor shared with us a gorgeous poem she wrote that is set back in her undergraduate days. I cannot wait to read the collection in which this poem appears. JEWISH LITERARY LINKS Jewish Literary Links. by Erika Dreifus on May 13, 2021. 1. Image by Yedidia Klein from Pixabay. FRIDAY FIND: WHERE TO PUBLISH FLASH NONFICTION & MICRO LATEST LIST UPDATE: JULY 2020. As promised two weeks ago, I’ve compiled what I am calling here a guide to journals and magazines that publish flash nonfiction/micro-essays.. Before I present the list, I need to issue a few clarifications and caveats. First, this list by no means includes *every* journal or magazine that might publish your piece of flash nonfiction. THE LATEST BOOK BY ERIKA DREIFUSBIRTHRIGHT: POEMS
The poems in _Birthright_, Erika Dreifus’s first poetry collection, embody multiple legacies: genetic, historical, religious, and literary. Through the lens of one person’s experience of inheritance, the poems suggest ways in which all of us may be influenced in how we perceive and process our lives and times. Here, a poet claims what is hers as a child of her particular parents; as a grandchild of refugees from Nazi Germany; as a Jew, a woman, a Gen Xer, and a New Yorker; as a reader of the Bible and Shakespeare and Flaubert and Lucille Clifton. This poet’s birthright is as unique as her DNA. But it resonates far beyond herself.Read More __
