GOING FROM ROCK BOTTOM TO GONGSHOW TO DREAM COME TRUE... Just in case anyone was wondering about my apparent online disappearing act, I just wanted to assure you that I am indeed alive and actually doing incredibly well... well, now I am... finally! To tell you the truth the reason I’ve been playing _Houdini_ was because I was in such a horrible place in my life, as rock bottom as I could ever imagine (physically, emotionally and financially), that I just wanted to hide under a big rock...I’m sure everyone can relate at one point or another. And as we all know sometimes we need those extreme kick-in-the-butts to be able to get the courage to move forward and just Fricken Do It! After a brutal year of many hard blows, my husband (Santi) and I got to a crucial point where we had 2 weeks, aka “The Gongshow”, to get our sh#$%t together and do the impossible (or at least I thought it was) I basically had no other options available so my last resort was a long-lost dream that had been collecting spider webs for years. With no other backup plan, we took the largest leap of faith we ever had and, guess what???.... IT WORKED! I OPENED UP MY VERY OWN ENGLISH SCHOOL IN TRUJILLO, HONDURAS!!! Get this - during the 2 week Gongshow, Santi and I had to find a new home and a place to have the school, we were lucky enough to find a big enough apartment that we could divide off and have both in the same place, so we moved in to our non-furnished place with our almost non-existing furniture (needless to say we have a lot of empty spaces that are craving to be filled!) Then the next major task began of creating and executing a marketing campaign including flyers, posters, coupons, mobile marketing, Joint Venture partners and even 2 radio shows! And... (insert sarcasm here) because I’m such a well-organized and pre-planned person I naturally waited till 10pm the night before my first class to even start decorating the classroom… but at 4am it looked just the way I’d imagined! (Special Thanks to Santi - my “personal decorating guru”!). I offered a free English class so that people could see if they liked it first before signing up. So for 2 busy and exhausting weekends, I gave classes while my “personal marketing and sales guru” did all the rest!) To put all of this into perspective, this was up there on the list of scariest things I’ve ever done in my life – somewhere between the highest bungee jump in the world and sky diving! The fear of not knowing if I’d get any students or if I was even capable of doing this at all and then wondering what the heck my contingency plan would be if this leap of faith didn’t work.... was needless to say absolutely petrifying. I was definitely in the UN-comfort zone! To add to the stress, we were doing all of this on a budget that was so tight even the strongest laxative couldn’t make it relax!! ;-) ... oh and did I forget to mention that on top of crawling out of a horrible situation and moving into a new house with no fridge and starting up a new business on a shoestring... that my PARENTS were also here on vacation during that time?!?!? Yeah, it was pretty crazy to say the least! And poor things they didn’t get much of a holiday because they were being the wonderful incredible parents that they are and helping us with EVERYTHING through all of the Gongshow! I couldn’t possibly thank them enough for all that they did, I'm sograteful for them.
So... it’s now 4 months later and for the first time in my life, I’m actually really proud of myself for what I’ve accomplished and am doing. I absolutely LOVE teaching ESL beginners, my students range from 2 to 42 years old! And the best part is that because it’s my own school I have the freedom to create my own English teaching materials, which has been a very exciting and creative adventure! However I still have one pretty important thing pending and am kinda stuck on it, so I was hoping to ask you for a little bit of help with it... I explain it at the end of the video – so please watch it and give me your best shot! The winner will be famous one day! ;-) p.s. For some reason I can't get the facebook comments plugin to work, so please go to the English Language Gamesmuch!

GOOD MORNING SONGS FOR KIDS I know what it’s like to be an ESL teacher and constantly searching for new and fun English teaching materials to incorporate into your class… trust me I’ve spent hours doing it! Probably one of the most common songs that teachers look for are GOOD MORNING SONGS FOR KIDS. Kids need some form of routine and a signal to know when something is starting and ending, hence why a Good morning song is such a great cue for the start of the class. Starting the class off with a song is also a wonderful way to set the tone for the rest of the class… it’s going to be FUN! These are 2 Good Morning songs that I use in my ESL beginners class. If you’re looking for more variations and versions, you can also check out THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION OF GOOD MORNING SONGS FOR ESLCHILDREN
that I compiled together of my favorite ones that are suitable for ESL children! (This was done after a weekend of watching videos onYouTube!)

COLOUR SONGS FOR ESL CHILDREN This is a really easy and simple song to use to teach the colours to ESL children. It’s got a catchy tune and you can really get the kids involved and participating. When I start off teaching it, I sing thefirst part:
“WHAT COLOUR, WHAT COLOUR, WHAT COLOUR IS THIS?” then have them reply with the second part: “IT’S RED, RED… RED, RED, RED!” (I encourage them to say the colours as loud as possible... even yell them out!) It’s a great song for repetition and really helps them learn their colours fast. Colour songs for ESL children - English Language Games The next level to this song is, I select the kids that are advancing faster (the ones that learned the colours) and I ask them to be my “Colour Teachers” (or “helpers”) and I get them to sing the first part of the colour song and the rest of the kids reply with the second part. This is just one way to keep the kids that are advancing faster, constantly engaged and participating in class. One of the main reasons why the advanced learners in the class start to cause distractions for the other kids is simply because they aren’t being challenged any more to continue to learn, so by giving those kids a new challenge as the “Colour Teachers” you keep them involved in the learning process of the whole class. Check out my other favorite colour songs for ESL children in THE BEST LIST OF COLOUR SONGS FOR ESL CHILDREN that I compiled together. I have to admit I spent a whole weekend watching videos on YouTube to put together the best colour songs I found for ESL beginners!via Posterize

USING VIDEO TO REINVENT EDUCATION Salman Khan: Let's use video to reinvent education Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and, now, other subjects. He shows the power of interactive exercises, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script -- give students video lectures to watch at home, and do "homework" in the classroom with the teacher available to help. ENGLISH LANGUAGE GAMES - THE FUN WAY OF LEARNING So how can we make learning English as a second language more fun for kids... English language games! Think back to when you were young, what did you enjoy more? Reading from a book aloud, embarrassed at your terrible accent and stumbling across words, or jumping, singing, dancing and playing! I do not think I would be alone in saying I preferred the latter! So, how do you want to teach ESL children? Do you want to make them repeat English phrases after you, or use a method that gets 100% of their attention and gets them to retain an amazing 80% of the their learning? It's not much of a choice really, is it! But what kind of English language games are best to teach ESL beginners? That's the great thing about English language games there are so many to choose from. One of my favorites is something called The Rainbow Path, or The Magic Path. You could also call it Don't Swim With The Fish! I love it so much as it has a craft time before the game starts. I think this gets kids motivated and the energy levels of the class wayup!
1. The first step of this game is to get sheets of different colored paper and get the kids to cut different shapes. Depending on the age of the class, you can help them with this or give them stencils touse.
2. The next step is to place the colored shapes in a path, making sure you create different color patters. This path is your bridge and to emphasize this I usually create water either size using paper or fabric and even put fish or crab in it! 3. Each child has a turn in crossing the bridge, you call out colors and the kids have to step on the right color shape. If they get it wrong they fall in the water. I make a big deal out of this and record splashing noises on a CD. I love the fact that you are teaching kids it's OK to laugh at their mistakes - that they do not need to be embarrassed because it's all part of the game. If you want you can give a small reward to kids that make it to the end of the path youcan.
This game is great as it connects with kids on different learning levels. They get to move around, which is always a must. It also connects with kids who like patterns and you can even add songs for children who respond well to music. For me, it includes the two most important factors of English Language Games, laughter and props! So try these English language games out with your kids. I guarantee they will enjoy it! Also, keep an eye out for other games online. There are so many games to choose from that can make your kid's learning experience interesting and fun.
