ecomaine is proud to share that our organization is the cover feature article in Waste Advantage Magazine this June. Our work in recycling, food waste diversion, waste-to-energy, commitment to safety and environmental excellence, as well as a significant investment in educational outreach are all covered in the article, available below. ECOMAINE IS MAINE’S LEADER IN SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT ecomaine is a municipally-owned non-profit waste manager, processing recycling, food waste, and solid waste for one-third of Maine. ecomaine operates a single-sort recycling facility, a waste-to-energy power plant, a landfill, and an environmental education and outreachprogram.
ECOMAINE’S WASTE-TO-ENERGY POWER PLANT ecomaine’s Waste-to-Energy Power Plant. Our waste-to-energy (WTE) plant receives trash identified as un-recyclable and converts it at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit to energy in the form of electricity. The ecomaine WTE plant processes about 175,000 tons of trash a year and, from that process, generates enough steam to create about 100,000megawatt

Lissa Bittermann Business Development Manager. Lissa is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and joined ecomaine in September of 2012. She brings 16 years of sales and recruiting experience from both the International Travel and Bio-Pharmaceutical industries; as well as 3 years of experience in fund raising and Operations for Boston GreenFest (the largest environmental festival in FOOD WASTE & COMPOSTING WITH ECOMAINE ecomaine added food waste recycling to our sustainable waste management solutions in to help our state reach their goal. We continue to build food waste recycling capacity in southern Maine, serving as a central collection point for grocery stores, institutions, and participating cities and towns. Collected food waste is transported to Exeter WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED AT ECOMAINE? What Can Be Recycled? ecomaine single-sort recycling lets you combine your paper, cardboard, glass, metal, and rigid plastic containers #1-7 (no Styrofoam, bags, or films, please) into one recycling container. With locations throughout Maine, ecomaine provides simple, convenient, and energy-efficient ways to recycle your materials. Not sure ECOMAINE’S LIST OF RECYCLING DO’S AND DON’TS Plastic bags & wrap. Trash & shopping bags (empty or full) Plastic wrap or film. Bubble wrap or mailers. Tyvek or plastic envelopes. Bread bags. Potato chip & snack bags. Sandwich baggies. Animal foodbags.

With concerns related to COVID-19 over grocery shopping, particularly for hard-to-find items like toilet paper and facial tissue, everyday recycling may fall down the list of priorities. Our History. ecomaine -originally named Regional Waste Systems – was founded in 1976 by the municipalities of Cape Elizabeth, Portland, Scarborough and South Portland in response to a new Maine law that called for the closing of privately owned landfills.
