To put some numbers to it, each year the worlds’ nations generate 1.3 billion tons of solid waste. That amounts to 1.2 kilograms (2.64 pounds) per person per day. 5 STEPS: EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION NEEDED TO BECOME A Ecology Project International (EPI) participants work side-by-side with field researchers from Costa Rica, Galapagos, Belize, and Mexico, and often return home with a new goal: Become a marine biologist. Pacuare Reserve is a scientifically managed wildlife reserve on Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast. Home to the most important leatherback nesting beach in Costa Rica, the reserve hosts a range of scientists studying sea turtles and other rare wildlife such as the jaguar and agamiheron.

Learning outdoors improves academic performance, health, and childhood development. It can also instill a sense of civic responsibility and empathy and build ties within the community. To put some numbers to it, each year the worlds’ nations generate 1.3 billion tons of solid waste. That amounts to 1.2 kilograms (2.64 pounds) per person per day. YELLOWSTONE WILDLIFE ECOLOGY Partner Profile. Rick Wallen has been the chief wildlife biologist for the bison program at Yellowstone National Park since 2002. Prior to his position in Yellowstone, Wallen studied a number of different ungulate species in the National Park around the American west. Now a resident of Gardiner, Montana, the only town in the world that GAP YEAR | COSTA RICA The lowland tropical rainforest of Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, the site of EPI's Gap Year Program, is home to more than 2,700 species of plants and animals, including sea turtles, jaguars, and rare agami herons, making it an ideal locale for the study of ecology.
