GLOBAL SEED SAVERS
Global Seed Savers is an educational and advocacy international non-profit organization supporting smallholder farmers in creating local food sovereignty and fostering a healthy environment through technical training and the establishment of community-owned and operated seed libraries. INTRODUCTION TO FAITH (FOOD ALWAYS IN THE HOME) GARDENING Speaker Bio: Dennis J. Tungol is the co-founder and the Training Director of SEED Project – Asia, Phil. Inc. and at the same time the assistant Pastor of JCTV in Pureza, Manila. He finished his Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture and majored in Entomology, with a minor in Pathology, at the Gregorio Araneta University. He also earned Diploma in Agriculture, major in Pest Management at the DRYLAND TECHNIQUES AND MULCHES Rainfall averages 125 cm (50 inches) annually during two brief periods in the spring and fall. In addition warm temperatures and high winds combine to rapidly dry the soil after the rains. Farmers have found that mulching with guinea grass (Panicum maximum) not only conserves moisture, but offers other benefits as well. PASTURE AND FORAGE CROPS A wide variety of plants can be used as pasture and forage crops in the tropics. Of these, a few are particularly important due to their wide adaptability, ease of growth, high yield potential, and high nutritional value. Most of these are either grasses or legumes. The majority of the grasses herein are highly suitable for permanent pastures, although a few are usually cut and carried to the USE OF MORINGA LEAF EXTRACT AS AN EFFECTIVE AND EASY CROP In November 2015, ECHO staff member Dr. Tim Motis attended the First International Moringa Symposium in Manila, Philippines. There he met Dr. Basra, who has studied and promoted moringa extensively and who presented a talk with valuable information on moringa leaf extract. Basra’s research on the use of moringa leaf extract to enhance crop yields builds upon and confirms findings DOLICHOS LABLAB: A LEGUME THAT FEEDS PEOPLE, ANIMALS AND The lablab bean Lablab purpureus (or Dolichos lablab) is a versatile subtropical and tropical nitrogen-fixing legume. The many agricultural and nutritional uses of this bean are worth noting. Depending on the variety and regional practices, lablab can potentially be used for human consumption, animal fodder and forage. STRONGER PLANTS WITH RAISED BEDS AccessAgriculture Training Video Raised beds must be 20 to 30 centimetres high, 80 to 100 centimeters wide and the furrows 30 to 40 centimeters wide. The beds can be 50 to 100 meters long depending on the slope of the field. Because the beds are wide, water is channelled faster through the land, while seeping into the soil and reaching the roots of the crop directly. PARTICIPATORY METHODS AND TOOLS IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT A participatory learning approach, applied at each stage of a community development project, is crucial to reaching the level of stakeholder involvement needed for lasting, positive change. The use of participatory survey and planning methods in the development process encourages community ownership of projects, allows for information to flow between both the community and the ECHOCOMMUNITY.ORGBY LANGUAGEPLANT INFORMATION PAGESECHO PUBLICATIONSANIMAL OPTIONSASIA ECHOcommunity is a membership community that provides access to nearly all of ECHO’s resources online, as well as communications tools to help development workers connect with each other. ------------------------- INTRODUCING 100-FOLD GARDENS WICKING BEDS FOR HIGH-DENSITY PLANTING OF VEGETABLES WHERE WATER ISSCARCE
_Dawn Berkelaar and Tim Motis_EXCERPT:
Network member Lance Edwards works in Zimbabwe. He told us about using and promoting inexpensive, water-conserving planting beds that he calls 100-fold gardens. These are a type of “wicking bed”; they are lined with plastic so that water pools at the bottom in a reservoir. From there, water moves up towards the plants’ rooting zone. 100-fold gardens are a way to maximize vegetable production onraised beds.
