Today is the launch date of the custom-design Radeon RX 6800 series video cards. We've already covered several models over the past weeks so we won't post all the press releases. Getting your hands on these models is just as hard as getting your hands on a reference card, so no big improvement there. XFX send over some information about their Speedster MERC 319, which is a new series from the company. These models have a triple-fan cooling solution with a black/white aluminium shroud. No extravagant RGB LEDs on this model but subtle backlit-logos. The XFX MERC 319 Radeon RX 6800 XT is priced at $799 and has a 2110MHz Game clock and 2360MHz Boost. This version has 14+2 phase VRM power design, 20 thermal pads for better heat dissipation, and a triple-fan cooling solution with seven 6mm copper heatpipes. The XFX MERC 319 Radeon RX 6800 is priced at $699 and has a 1980MHz Game clock and 2190MHz Boost. The features are largely similar, with exception of 10+1 phase VRM, an unspecified number of thermal pads, and a cooler with six instead of seven heatpipes. > _The all new XFX Mercury 319 family of graphics cards> brings

80 PLUS PRICE HIKE MAY MEAN HIGHER PSU PRICES Posted on Wednesday, November 25 2020 @ 16:35:22 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
German tech site Igor's Lab points out that 80 PLUS is hiking its prices next year. While 80 PLUS has its flaws, it's become so ubiquitous that the logo carries a lot of value to a lot of enthusiasts. But to get 80 PLUS certified, power supply companies have to pay a lot of money to get units tested. The company behind 80 PLUS has reportedly announced a significant price increase that will go into effect in 2021. While the impact may not be that big for PSUs that are sold in large volumes, there may be a noticeable impact on the pricing of lower-volume PSUs: > _Plug Load Solutions has reportedly increased its per-SKU > certification price by 3x. For a new model launched after 2021, this > would mean an increase in flat licensing fees by tens of thousands > of Dollars. If a manufacturer launched a PSU in 450 W, 550 W, 650 W, > 750 W, 850 W, and 1000 W, they pay a flat $21,000. Interestingly, > Igor's Lab reports that a manufacturer has to pay the licensing fees > even for an OEM/whitebox PSU model that has already been certified > by 80 Plus. AMD RYZEN 5000H BASED LAPTOPS TO GET GEFORCE RTX 3070 AND BETTER ASDISCRETE OPTION
Posted on Wednesday, November 25 2020 @ 13:34:09 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
Details about NVIDIA's mobile GeForce RTX 30 series were published by WCCF Tech.
With the current generation of AMD-based laptops, there are no models with high-end discrete video card from NVIDIA because the Ryzen 4000H series mobile processors are limited to PCI Express 3.0 x8, which was reportedly a stumbling block for laptop makers. This is no longer a concern with the Ryzen 5000H series and word on the street is that we'll see Ryzen 5000H processors paired with discrete video card from NVIDIA all the way up to the mobile RTX3080.
> _We have heard that AMD Cezanne (Ryzen 5000H) laptops were already > listed on long-term roadmaps and datasheets with GeForce RTX 3070 > and RTX 3080 graphics cards> . Though the
> prototypes of next-gen GPUs have only started shipping to ODMs last > month, so OEMs (companies working with ODMs) have not yet received > the prototypes with such configurations. Regardless of this fact, > the slides that appear to have originated at NVIDIA, would > ultimately confirm that the company is ready to support AMD Ryzen > 5000 CPUs. This will undoubtedly put a lot of pressure on Intel, > which dominated the gaming laptop market for years._ The slide, which reportedly originated from NVIDIA , indicates $1,299 as the target price for a gaming laptop with the RTX 3070 and $1,999 for a version with the RTX3080.
While laptops with the Intel Tiger Lake-H should arrive in Q2 2021, it appears laptops with the AMD Cezanne-H are further away. According to Videocardz, AMD will announce the Ryzen 5000H series at CES 2021 in January but the first laptops aren't anticipated until late 2021._Via: VideoCardz

LINUS TORVALDS SAYS APPLE M1 LOOKS NICE FOR LINUX (IF IT ONLY HADDRIVERS)
Posted on Wednesday, November 25 2020 @ 12:52:12 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
Linux creator Linus Torvalds said he likes what Apple has done with its M1 SoC and that he'd love to have one of these new MacBook Air laptops to run Linux on. However, Torvalds says this is most likely not going to happen as it's not worth the trouble. The Apple M1 SoC is by far the fastest ARM-based chip for the consumer market but Torvalds isn't interested unless Apple opens up. And that's an unlikely scenario: > _In an exclusive interview, Torvalds expanded on why he can't see > porting Linux to the M1-based Macs. "The main problem with the M1 > for me is the GPU and other devices around it, because that's likely > what would hold me off using it because it wouldn't have any Linux > support unless Apple opens up.">
> Apple has long had a love/hate relationship with open source. > Apple's never been forthcoming with the hardware technical details > that open-source developers need to make the most of their gear._ More details at ZD Net.

AMD AGESA 1180 TO DELIVER PRECISION BOOST OVERDRIVE 2 IN DECEMBER Posted on Tuesday, November 24 2020 @ 14:05:18 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
Starting early next month, we'll see the first BIOS updates with AGESA 1180 for AMD 400-series and 500-series motherboards. The big new feature is Precision Boost Overdrive 2, it promises to regulate the curve to precisely and dynamically calculate the exact voltage required for specific workloads. While typical undervolting optimizes for the worst case scenario, Precision Boost Overdrive 2 features adaptive undervolting. The tool will rely on the workload, temperature socket limits, etc to adapt the voltage as require. It can do this 1,000 times per second. > _The Curve Optimization tool will be part of AMD’s Precision Boost > Overdrive toolkit, meaning that using it will invalidate the > warranty on the hardware, however AMD knows that a number of its > user base loves to overclock or undervolt to get the best out of the > hardware. The company states that this adaptive methodology will > allow for performance gains in both single-thread and multi-thread > workloads, as opposed to a standard voltage offset, which they say > only really helps with multi-thread examples._ In terms of performance, AMD says Precision Boost Overdrive 2 can give 2 percent higher single-threaded performance and up to 10 percent higher multi-threaded performance for the Ryzen 9 5950X. AnandTech offers more details over here.

GOOGLE EXTENDS CHROME SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS 7 TO JANUARY 15, 2022 Posted on Tuesday, November 24 2020 @ 13:32:06 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system hit the end of its lifecycle on January 14, 2020. This means the operating system is no longer receiving security updates from the software giant. Despite this, a large number of web users are still using Windows 7 everyday, including many business clients. Google planned to cease Chrome support for Windows 7 on support until July 15, 2021 but the search giant now announces it's extending the cut-off date to January 15, 2022. In a blog post, Google Chrome engineer Max Christoff explains the company is extending support to give enterprise users more time to switch to Windows 10: > _After assessing the current situation, and based on feedback from > our valued enterprise customers, Chrome is extending our support for > Windows 7 until at least January 15, 2022. That’s a 6-month > extension from our previously communicated date of July 15, 2021. > We’ll continue to evaluate the conditions our enterprise customers > are facing, and communicate any additional changes in the future._ The blog post points to data which shows 22 percent of organizations that use Windows are still relying on older versions. About 21 percent of organizations are in the process of migrating to Windows 10 but some will need more time as IT priorities have shifted due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.
