VideoCardz received the first photoof
an AMD B550 based motherboard. The product pictured below is made by SOYO, the Chinese firm behind Maxsun. It's a really low-budget option that you're unlikely to see outside of Asia. Anyway, the interesting thing here is that VideoCardz is able to confirm that the B550 indeed has PCI Express 4.0 support, a feature that isn't present on the B550A. The latter was rolled out some timeago for OEMs.
> _We received a picture of the first B550 non-A motherboard from a > source at SOYO (a company behind Chinese Maxsun). This motherboard > is a very lost-cost option. It’s a Micro-ATX motherboard with a > brown PCB, red PCIe slots and blue VGA connector, but a true icing > on the cake is a dragon graphic._ The launch of these boards is expected sometime in the first half of2020.

TESLA HAS NOW MADE 1 MILLION ELECTRIC CARS Posted on Tuesday, March 10 2020 @ 11:37:10 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
When Elon Musk set out to start an electric car company, many people thought he was nuts (and we aren't even talking about his other gig, SpaceX). Over the years, Tesla got criticized and ridiculed many times and it's a small miracle that the company is still aliveand kicking.
After persevering through many hurdles, Tesla has become a massive success story. The company set out a new track, not only with its battery technology but also via the way it makes and designs its cars, the self-driving car technology, and the high level of integration that makes it possible to innovate at a rate that can't be matched by traditional car makers. After going through a production hell, the company's hard work is paying off as it can now make significant numbers of cars. Elon Musk just shared on Twitter that Tesla has made its one millionth car, ared Model Y.
Tesla manufactured 415,000 cars at its Fremont, California facility in 2019, a number that's expected to climb to 500,000 this year. The new fab in Shanghai, China is expected to make 150,000 cars this year, and is already being upgraded to a capacity of 260,000 a year.(comments? )
AMD RYZEN 4000 APUS PROMISE UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE Posted on Tuesday, March 10 2020 @ 11:25:03 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
AMD VP of computing and graphics Rick Bergman claims that with the new 7nm Ryzen 4000 series laptop APUs, it's possible to hit a battery life of up to 18 hours. For many years, AMD has had a bad reputation in the laptop market because its platforms delivered poorer energy efficiency than Intel's solutions, but that is slowly changing. Bergman promised there will be at least one new AMD-based laptop that can hit 18 hours of runtime. Unfortunately, it's not known how this figure was calculated. For all we know, it could be with the screen brightness turned down, WiFi off, no real usage, and a big device with a massive battery. > _Bergman’s statement on Thursday just might change our minds. > “We’ve moved all the way up to as much as 18 hours with our new > Ryzen product,” Bergman said, among other facts about how fast the > chips would be, and how many PC makers are adopting AMD’s new > Ryzen mobile chips.>
> Vendors have largely remained tight-lipped about Ryzen 4000 battery > performance. Asus has said its gaming-focused ROG Zephyrus would hit > “10 hours.”_ The first laptops with AMD Ryzen 4000 series APUs are expected within a couple of months. These Zen 2-based APUs are codenamed "Renoir" and feature Vega-based integrated graphics.(comments? )
INTEL TO FAB 6NM AND 3NM XE GPUS AT TSMC? Posted on Tuesday, March 10 2020 @ 11:14:34 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
Word is going around again that Intel may tap TSMC to manufacture its future Xe GPU. According to a report from the Chinese-language MyDrivers , Intel's upcoming GPUs will use TSMC's 6nm process in 2021 and TSMC's 3nm node in 2022. According to Intel, the Xe "DG1" GPU will be made on the company's own 10nm process. It's believed that the firm will outsource the production of the Xe "DG2" GPU to TSMC because the latter can produce the chips faster and more economically. Previously, Intel's official communication indicates that a future Xe would be one of the first parts to use the company's internal 7nm process. WORMS IS MAKING A COMEBACK THIS YEAR (VIDEO) Posted on Tuesday, March 10 2020 @ 10:52:15 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
If you've been gaming on the PC for a long time, you probably remember the Worms franchise. Personally, I've only played the shareware versions and it's quite surprising that the franchise has had so many installments since 1995. Anyway, Team17 just announced that a new version of this classic turn-based artillery game is on the way. The developer claims the new Worms will be unlike anything you've ever seen, with "new worms and new ways to play."> _ INCOMING!

NVIDIA CANCELS GTC 2020 WEBCAST BUT WILL MAKE ANNOUNCEMENTS ON MARCH24
Posted on Tuesday, March 10 2020 @ 10:27:37 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
Last week, NVIDIA cancelled its GTC 2020 event in San Francisco and turned it into a web-only event due to the coronavirus outbreak. Now the firm is scaling back its plans even further by cancelling the planned webcast. Instead, NVIDIA will distribute some press releases on March 24, which will be followed by an investor call. At first, it seems a bit strange that NVIDIA is cancelling its digital keynote over public health uncertainties. This is pure speculation on my part, but it could be that NVIDIA 's Ampere GPUs are delayed due to the COVID-19 situation. Perhaps NVIDIA had to change its plans a second time because continued production and/or logistics problems caused by the novel coronavirus outbreak made it impossible to stick to previously planned launch date. That's one way to interpret this news. > _ NVIDIA today announced that, in light of > the spread of the coronavirus, it is deferring plans to deliver a > webcast keynote as part of the digital version of its GPU Technology > Conference later this month.>
> The company will, instead, issue on Tuesday, March 24, news > announcements that had been scheduled to be shared in the keynote. > This will be followed by an investor call with NVIDIA > founder and Chief Executive Officer Jensen > Huang, which will be accessible to other listeners.>
> The call will begin at 8am Pacific time and will be accessible at > investor.nvidia.com.>
> NVIDIA had initially planned to host its > 11th annual GTC on March 22-26 at the San Jose Convention Center, > with an anticipated audience of 10,000. Amid the worsening > coronavirus situation, the company said earlier this month that it > was shifting much of the conference to its digital platform.>
> The company believes that continuing public health uncertainties > would challenge its ability to produce and deliver a digital> keynote.
>
> Other components of GTC Digital will still take place, including > live webinars, recorded talks and panels, research posters, > trainings, and Connect with Experts sessions available starting > Wednesday, March 25. More details will be provided in the coming> days. _

DANTE'S INFERNO NOW RUNS AT 4K 60FPS WITH PS3 EMULATION (VIDEO) Posted on Tuesday, March 10 2020 @ 10:07:18 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
eTeknix noticed that it's now possible to play Dante's Inferno on the PS at 4K resolution with 60fps, even with mid-range GPUs. This ten-year old game never saw a PC release but thanks to recent advances made to the RPCS3PlayStation 3
emulator you can finally enjoy it on the PC platform. > _Thanks to recent improvements Dante's Inferno is now completely > playable! While graphics and performance have been great with this > title for over a year. Issues with Physics made it impossible to > finish some stages normally. Stuttering cutscene audio and stability > issues were also holding it back.>
> Thankfully after some of our testers have finished this title, we > can confirm these issues were fixed! Gameplay runs at a smooth 60fps > quite easily, even mid-range CPU's can hit 60fps!>
> There is still some graphical issues in a couple cutscenes with > Satan, but it doesn't pop up often enough to be much of a problem._(comments? )
AMD RADEON RX 590 GME IS A POLARIS 20 XTX FOR THE CHINESE MARKET Posted on Monday, March 09 2020 @ 12:49:29 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
AMD is bringing back Polaris for yet another spin. VideoCardz noticednew
Radeon RX 590 GME video cards are making it to the market. This appears to be a China-exclusive model based on the old 14nm Polaris 20 XTX GPU. Basically, it's a rebranded Radeon RX 580, with performance about 5 percent lower than the regular Radeon RX 590. There are no official clockspeeds but the slowest Radeon RX 590 GME is the PowerColor Red Dragon, which offers a 1380MHz Boot (for comparison, the non-GME version has a 1555MHz Boost). > _The Radeon RX 590 GME features Polaris 20 XTX GPU, not Polaris 30 > as the original RX 590. This is without a doubt a continuation of > misleading product naming by AMD and this is likely why we won’t > see this model on different markets. AMD’s Polaris 20 is a 14nm > processor, while Polaris 30 is 12nm. The latter offers more headroom > for higher clocks and there is no logical reason to call the new > model an RX 590. TWO VULNERABILITIES DISCOVERED IN AMD RYZEN AND EPYC CPUS Posted on Monday, March 09 2020 @ 10:07:19 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
A team of international security researchers discovered that all AMD processor architectures since 2011 are vulnerable to two side-channel attacks that leak a bit of meta-data. The "Collide + Probe" and "Load + Reload" vulnerabilities exploit the L1-data (L1D) cache way predictor of AMD's processors. Collectively called "Take A Way", these bugs are less severe than the Meltdown and Zombieload vulnerabilities found on the Intel platform, which leak tons of actualdata.
TechSpot explains the flaws over here:
> _In both new exploits, collectively called "Take A Way" flaws, > attacking software begins by picking an address corresponding with > the target data’s address. The attacker then accesses the data > stored in their version of the address, but that creates a link > based on the address within the cache and the way predictor. The > route the processor will take to access that address next time is > guaranteed to be quite quick. But if the address is triggered a > third time, then the processor will get to it slowly.>
> All the attacker has to do, then, is bring up that address at > regular intervals. If it comes up quick then the victim hadn’t > accessed it during the interval, but if it takes a while, it was > accessed. This allows the attacker to monitor when the victim > accesses data stored within the processor, without knowing where > that data is, and without the requirement of sharing memory with the> victim._
AMD was made aware of these flaws in August 2019. Here is AMD'sresponse:
> _We are aware of a new white paper that claims potential security > exploits in AMD CPUs, whereby a malicious actor could manipulate a > cache-related feature to potentially transmit user data in an > unintended way. The researchers then pair this data path with known > and mitigated software or speculative execution side channel > vulnerabilities. AMD believes these are not new speculation-based> attacks.
>
> AMD continues to recommend the following best practices to help > mitigate against side-channel issues:>
> * Keeping your operating system up-to-date by operating at the > latest version revisions of platform software and firmware, which > include existing mitigations for speculation-based vulnerabilities > * Following secure coding methodologies > * Implementing the latest patched versions of critical libraries, > including those susceptible to side channel attacks > _ * _ Utilizing safe computer practices and running antivirus> software_

IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THE HISTORY AND INNER WORKINGS OF ZIP FILES Posted on Monday, March 09 2020 @ 09:53:15 CET by Thomas DeMaesschalck
Hans Wennborg wrote an in-depth article about Zip files, you can check it out over here . Created about 30 years ago using technology from the 50s and 70s, Zip files are among the most widely used file formats out on the web. But what's their history, and how do they work? Read the full article to find out. > _I have been curious about data compression and the Zip file format > in particular for a long time.
