On The Virtues of the Fuselage-Frame Skin Boat . Full disclosure: The plans for Egret, a fuselage-style skin-on-frame kayak of my own design, are available from Duckworks.One might therefore be inclined to think that this article is entirely self-promotional, and that I’m just singing the praises of the fuselage frame because I design kayaks this way, but that is not accurate. CHALOUPE VERCHERES L’ AUTHENTIQUE The chaloupe is a kind of dory-skiff with lower sides and a wider beam as can be seen in the photographs. She is developed from a Double-Ender also shown in the pictures. Her lines are adjusted to make her the ideal workboat for the rivers and lakes of Quebec and the bordering states of the USA. MOUSE BOATS AND FLATS RATS The Flats Rat is a bulked-up version of the Mouse, perfect for chubbier boaters. The designer says that the Flats Rat has 8" of freeboard with 300 lbs. of load. In contrast, the Mouse will hold a kid or two, or one adult not overfond of ice cream and such delights. Freeboard is minimal, about 5". DUCKWORKS - BUILDING AND CRUISING IN A ST PIERRE DORY - PT 1 These large dories like big props with low revolutions. The St. Pierre’s used a 20” prop revolving at around 400 rpm. Ouch!! A 20” prop was around a $1000 at that time. Finally I compromised and found a used 16” prop with a 16” pitch for about $300. I figured I would get hull speed at about 600 rpm with this prop. DeWalt claims they have the largest capacity 12” double compound saw but the numbers do not lie in favor of the Delta. The Delta saw has a 90 degree capacity of 2” X 10” while the DeWalt cuts only a 2” X 8” piece of dimensional lumber. MAKING A POLYTARP SAIL Taping down the seam with more packing tape, then run the edge thru the sewing machine. Repeat for the leech. It can be paddled, rowed or motorized. Needless to say, it is unsinkable, having 2 buoyancy chambers, as well as the foam structure. With a 200 pound occupant, it draws only 3 inches of water. All wood can be purchased at a lumberyard, and even if the builder elects to use okoume ply for the frames, the cost remains within this parameter. Heat-shrink Dacron is less than $4/yard.
