STASHING OF YOUR RECEIPTS AND PAPERWORK Posted on March 24, 2020by Rich Wegner
Presently, almost everyone is, or has been, involved with their 2019 Tax Returns. What should you now save and what should you dump? HOW LONG SHOULD YOU KEEP TAX RETURN-RELATED MATERIALS? How to best store the documents? Most financial professionals recommend hanging on to documentation supporting your annual tax return for AT LEAST THREE YEARS. Reason being is that ,the IRS can audit your tax returns for up to three years after the tax filing deadline. DID YOU FAIL TO DISCLOSE ALL INCOME ON YOUR TAX RETURN? If you underreported income by more than 25%, and the IRS finds out about it, the IRS can audit your tax return up to six years later. YOU SHOULD MAINTAIN THOSE RELATED RECORDS FOR SIX YEARS, for when they ask you to verify your income, deductions, or credits earned. WHAT PAPERWORK SHOULD YOU BE SAVING? You should keep EVERYTHING THAT ‘PROVES’ WHAT’S ON YOUR TAX RETURN. Your W-2s, proof of purchase price of the assets on your return, proof of the losses, business books with receipts or proof of payments or anything else that backs-up your Tax Return. PROPERTY-RELATED DOCUMENTS. Any documentation related to property ownership should be maintained for an extended period of time. The IRS website explains that it’s a good idea to keep “records relating to property until the period of limitations expires for the year in which you dispose of the property.” These records must be maintained in order to determine any depreciation, amortization, or depletion deduction. These documents are needed to help calculate gains or losses when you sell or dispose of the property. SAVE DOCUMENTS ELECTRONICALLY? Some experts suggest it’s an even better idea to store the above items electronically. I do, for instant retrieval from my data bases. But if you don’t also save the hard copies, your date base crashes and the data is destroyed, so are you if asked for back-up and you can’t produce it. STRATEGIES FOR HARD COPIES STORAGE. A locked metal file cabinet or a fireproof safe is best. A LOCKED CABINET prevents thieves from stealing sensitive personal information such as your Social Security number, banking information and anything else that can be used to Hack Your Accounts. A FIREPROOF SAFE protects important documents in the event you experience a disaster. PAPERWORK OF WHICH YOU CAN DUMP. After stashing your needed for the IRS paperwork if necessary, there are many things you can dump. PAY STUBS, ATM AND DEPOSIT RECEIPTS can be shredded after you’ve double-checked them with your monthly bank statements. There’s also no need to hang onto bills after you’ve paid them, EXCEPT WHEN THEY SUPPORT A TAX DEDUCTION OR CREDIT that you received. DETERMINING WHEN IT’S SAFE TO SHRED The three- or six-year period for maintaining supporting documentation for a tax return starts from the due date of the return, or from the date you filed the return if you filed it late. If you extend your 2019 return until OCTOBER 15, 2020, then you must keep those records until OCTOBER 15, 2026. Even When You Think It’s Safe to Shred IRS paperwork, insurance companies or creditors may require you to keep paperwork longer than the IRS does. Check their rules also before you start-up the grinder. Posted in Political Comment|
