FIRSTS: THE MOUSE
Overview 1. Doug Engelbart invented the computer mouse in the early 1960s in his research lab at Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International). The first prototype was built in 1964, the patent application for this "X-Y position indicator for a display system" was filed in 1967, and US Patent 3,541,541 was awarded in 1970.ABOUT BOOTSTRAPPING

Doug Engelbart coined the term Collective IQ as a measure of how well people can work together on important challenges – how quickly and intelligently they can anticipate or respond to a situation, leveraging their collective perception, memory, insight, vision, planning, reasoning, foresight, and experience into applicable knowledge. Collective IQ is ultimately a measure of effectiveness.FIRSTS: THE DEMO

A curatorial website at Stanford University 1A "Welcome to the MouseSite, a resource for exploring the history of human computer interaction beginning with the pioneering work of Douglas Engelbart and his colleagues at Stanford Research Institute in the 1960s."ABOUT BOOTSTRAPPING
About Bootstrapping 0 Overview 1 Doug Engelbart coined the term bootstrapping to describe how whoever is working on developing and/or deploying new/improved tools and practices for boosting Collective IQ could use what they build to boost their own effectiveness – it's the expectation that anyone working on an important aspect of boosting Collective IQ will seriously push the envelopeENGELBART ACADEMY
The Engelbart Academy 0 Welcome! 1. Doug Engelbart was a prominent pioneer of the Information Age, whose visionary research beginning in the 1960s and 1970s spawned more breakthrough innovation, repeatedly, than probably any lab of its kind, before or since.ABOUT NLS/AUGMENT
About NLS / Augment 0 NLS 1 Doug Engelbart first envisioned his work in the 1950s, published it in 1962 with a call to "augment the human intellect", and hired a small team of researchers to develop a demonstration hyper collaborative knowledge environment system called NLS (for oNLine System), first published and publicly demonstrated in 1968 (see the Mother of All Demos), and continued to 1968 DEMO INTERACTIVE A cool new way to experience the 1968 "Mother of All Demos" with the late Doug Engelbart and his incredible team. Test drive today. A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR THE AUGMENTATION OF MAN'S Man's population and gross product are increasing at a considerable rate, but the complexity of his problems grows even faster. And the urgency with which solutions must be found becomes steadily greater in response to the increased rate of activity and the increasingly global nature of that activity. Augmenting man's intellect, in the sense defined above, would warrant the full-time efforts AUGMENTING HUMAN INTELLECT: A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK The process of developing this conceptual framework brought out a number of significant realizations: that the intellectual effectiveness exercised today by a given human has little likelihood of being intelligence limited—that there are dozens of disciplines in engineering, mathematics, and the social, life, and physical sciences that can contribute improvements to the system of intellectABOUT OUR WEBSITE

FIRSTS: DOUG'S VISION FOR HUMANITY Historic Firsts: A Vision for Humanity 0 Introduction 1 Doug Engelbart has been most widely celebrated for his pioneering work in information technology, from inventing the computer mouse to producing his now-famous 1968 "Mother of All Demos," marking the dawn of interactive computing and the Information Age.Indeed most of his awards, from the Webby Award to the National Medal of TechnologyHISTORY IN PIX
First mouse.. - Doug Engelbart invented the computer mouse in 1963, built by his lead engineer Bill English as part of an experiment to find better ways to point-and-click on a display screen. Made in a shop at SRI, the casing was carved out of wood. It had only one button, which was all there was room for.ABOUT COLLECTIVE IQ
Doug's Great Demo: 1968 0 Welcome to theDemo.org – our main portal into Doug's great demo of 1968 where you will find stories, archive footage and photos, and links to other fabulous resources at Stanford Libraries Special Collections, SRI International, Computer History Museum and more. Experience the demo, and watch retrospectives by Doug and his team recounting their experience. BOOTSTRAPPING STRATEGY The objective of Engelbart's bootstrapping strategy is equipping those groups that can make the most difference in addressing important challenges with the most effective Collective IQ tools and practices available. The strategy is about how you accelerate the continuous improvement and deployment of those tools and practices into those target end-user groups in the least disruptive, fastest AUGMENTING HUMAN INTELLECT: A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK The process of developing this conceptual framework brought out a number of significant realizations: that the intellectual effectiveness exercised today by a given human has little likelihood of being intelligence limited—that there are dozens of disciplines in engineering, mathematics, and the social, life, and physical sciences that can contribute improvements to the system of intellectFIRSTS: THE KEYSET
Historic Firsts: The Keyset 0 Overview 1 In addition to inventing the computer mouse, Doug Engelbart and his research team at SRI adapted a five-key "keyset" for typing and entering commands with the left hand while pointing and clicking with the mouse. Reminiscent of equipment used by telegraph operators and stenographers, Engelbart was among the first circa 1965 to use a keyset with a* Site Map
