ENNIS TRAD FESTIVAL
Ennis is a good place to hear traditional music at any time, but during this festival it is the only place to be, with hundreds of formal and informal sessions taking place. It's a very relaxed and friendly affair, so even those with only a passing interest in the music will enjoy it, FOOD IN EARLY IRELAND In early Ireland everyone ate more or less the same food, initially whatever they could hunt or forage, later grains and other farmed crops. As the centuries passed an increasing divide appeared between the diets of the rich and poor, especially when the Norman and English occupiers began exporting foods on which the poorer Irish had depended. Survival became a real struggle for those at FRESHWATER SWIMMING IN IRELAND Loughrea Lake, Galway. This large limestone lake is a popular swimming place locally and has good facilities with changing rooms, showers and picnic areas available. There is an information board near the car park where you can check times of lifeguard duty. There are two piers for diving. Its name in Irish – Lough Riach – means ‘the grey WHAT YOUR MONEY BUYS IN IRELAND There is no escaping it, Ireland is an expensive country, it's an expensive place to live and an expensive place to take a vacation. There is value out there though - you'll find more about that in our Save section. This is a quick run down of what things cost in Ireland, which will give you some idea of what to expect when you arrive. FOOD IN IRELAND 1600 When the potato arrived in Ireland it seemed like a godsend, easily grown and nutritious enough to sustain whole families on little else. The Irish climate suited it well and before long it was the staple food of almost the entire population. A better fed Irish population began to grow rapidly, increasing from less than 1 million in 1580 to over 8 million by 1840. IRISH SURNAMES OF VIKING ORIGIN The Vikings were in Ireland for relatively short time, but they left a considerable legacy of names behind. Some, such as MacAuliffe (Son of Olaf) and MacManus (Son of Magnus) are quite common, though the latter at least are not all of Viking stock.. Some names from this time are descriptive, so that Doyle is an Anglicisation of Ó Dubhghaill, which means “son of the dark (or evil)IRISH SURNAMES MAC

Picking the right tour company to organise your trip to Ireland is the first major decision you take when planning your vacation - and possibly the ROADSIDE SHRINES AND GROTTOES Roadside Shrines and Grottoes. Nobody can travel for any distance in Ireland without coming across a roadside shrine or grotto. They vary from just a small statue set into a wall, to large, elaborately constructed tableaux and the vast majority are Marian Shrines, although some celebrate local saints and others, such as the one onthe left
RESEARCHING IRISH PROPERTY & LAND RECORDS The Registry of Deeds was established in 1707 and was originally a voluntary register used mainly by Members of the Church of Ireland. It became part of the Land Registry, which records all property registrations in Ireland still, from 1892. In Northern Ireland a database of Freeholder’ Records is available and searchable online. This
UNDERSTANDING IRISH LAND DIVISIONS There is no doubt that land division in Ireland is complicated. But as genealogical records are invariably tied to civil, administrative and church divisions understanding them from the get-go is vital. This quick primer on land division will have you up to speed in no time. GENEALOGY SOFTWARE: DO YOU NEED IT? You don't absolutely need any special software, but having an easy method of storing and cross referencing information can be extremely useful, especially as the volume of data grows. This is a brief list of widely available genealogy software, both free and available for a reasonable charge, with some of the pros and cons of each.IRISH TEA BRACK
Put the tea, sugar, lemon rind and dried fruit in a bowl. Stir well, then cover and leave to soak overnight. The next day, preheat the oven to 350ºF ( 180ºC/Gas Mark 4) and grease the loaf tin with a little butter. Beat the egg and mix it thoroughly with the fruit. Sieve the flour, spices and bread soda together and stir well into the fruit IRISH SURNAMES OF GAELIC ORIGIN A majority, though a small one, of Irish surnames are of Gaelic origin. Many are now used primarily in their Anglicized form or have been subtlety changed in translation to English. The use of O' or Mac/Mc before a name is frequent and a particularly Gaelic form of name, which also occurs in Scotland.IRISH SURNAMES MAC
Mc is an anglicisation of Mac, which means son. In Irish all Mc names are written Mac with a space before the next part. So my name McCartan is in Irish Mac Artáın (note the accent over the second a and thedotless i.
HUGUENOT & PALATINE NAMES IN IRELAND It is estimated that to-day only around 500 or so people living in Ireland can claim a Palatine origin, but some names which survive from this time include Fizelle, Fyffe (of banana fame), Ruttle, Glazier, Shouldice and Switzer. Benner is one that many visitors to Ireland will have seen – Benner’s is a long established and popular Dinglehotel.
