Even youth who do not possess computers and Internet access at home are participants in a shared culture where new social media, online media distribution, and digital media production are commonplace among their peers and in their everyday school contexts. AN OPEN BADGE SYSTEM FRAMEWORK: A FOUNDATIONAL PIECE ON A Working Badge Paper. We’ve done a lot of thinking, talking and conceptualizing about badges as an alternative path to certification. DIGITAL MEDIA AND LEARNING RESEARCH HUB From 2009 to 2018, the Digital Media and Learning (DML) Research Hub at UC Irvine fostered dialog, collaboration, and debate among a diverse group of scholars, designers and educators seeking to leverage today’s technology for progressive educational goals. The DML Research Hub was created in 2009 as part of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s Digital Media and Learning Initiative,a grantmaking area
launched in 2006 to help determine how digital technologies are changing the way young people learn, play, socialize, and participate in civic life. The DML Hub concluded its work in the summer of 2018, in tandem with the conclusion of the MacArthur Foundation’s DMLInitiative.
The Connected Learning Lab at UC Irvine has been established as a lasting institutional home for the legacy of the DML Hub. The CLL and Connected Learning Alliance website will continue to be updated with new research projects and research tools, and the DML conference community will be sustained through the ongoing Connected Learning Summit . The content from the websites for the DML Hub, the Connected Learning Research Network , and the Youth and Participatory Politics Research Network will be archived andmaintained.
