An experienced closed circuit rebreather (CCR) diver made a 300 fsw (90 msw) dive with a 20-minute bottom time. Decompression proceeded normally until the diver experienced a problem during the 60 fsw (18 msw) stop. The diver ascended directly to the surface. Code named Habbakuk, the scheme was eventually torpedoed and the prototype vessel sank in a remote Rocky Mountain lake. Most shipwrecks are frozen in time, but the Habbakuk, the 1:50 scale prototype DEHYDRATION AND DIVING Dehydration reduces the circulating blood volume, the perfusion (blood flow) of tissues, and therefore the elimination of inert gas. If the elimination of inert gas is reduced, the diver will surface with more inert gas in the body and thus have an increased risk of developing DCS. Dehydration also increases the viscosity (thickness/stickiness REBREATHER FATALITIES Let’s look at some rebreather accidents/fatalities. An experienced closed circuit rebreather (CCR) diver made a 300 fsw (90 msw) dive with a 20-minute bottom time. Decompression proceeded normally until the diver experienced a problem during the 60 fsw (18 msw) stop. The diver ascended directly to the surface. DEEPER DOCUMENTARY REVIEW Most divers won’t descend below 130 feet (40m) though diving deeper is very appealing to many of us, myself included.
