ZOOM, ALTERNATIVES
_Note: This article is not complete, but the information though incomplete is valuable enough today so I decided to go ahead and publish it. I will continue to update this article with more information about Zoom privacy and security issues as well as fill out information for Zoom alternatives._ Schools, companies, and many around you maybe using Zoom. Zoom is a video conferencing tool that can be used to teach students, have meetings or just connect with your family and friends. But Zoom has serious security and privacy problems. If someone asked me, “Do you recommend Zoom?” I would not hesitate to answer, “No.” I have been reading John Gruber’s Daring Fireball for a long time, and I trust John’s opinionated but fair analysis of many tech-related stuff. So I will list the articles he has written regarding Zoom’s privacy and security issues. Read the articles John links to and read what he says, then make your own decision on whetheror not to use Zoom.
I used Duck Duck Go and searched for ‘zoom’ at Daring Fireball: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=site%3Adaringfireball.net+zoom&atb=v116-1&ia=web Copy the URL and paste it into your browser and you’ll get a similar list to the one you see below. You need a Microsoft account; you can also sign in with your GitHub account. I happened to have a GitHub account, so I used that to log into Skype. It will take a couple of emails sent to the email address associated with your GitHub account. Unfortunately it doesn’t bring in your name, so you’ll have to manually enter your first and last name. The first thing I noticed was the very next screen titled “Find Contacts Easily”. What this means is that Skype will upload all of your contacts. I pressed the small ‘Skip’ button on the upper right corner. I can add people only those who I need to video conference with. Skype will then ask permission to access your microphone and camera, which I agreed to. But no to notifications; I have enough notifications already. Once you’re ready to go, the first thing Skype wants you to tap is “Sync Contacts”. Don’t do it. There are three buttons on the bottom: Chats, Calls, Contacts. Just click on Contacts, click on the + button on the upper right corner and add the people you want toSkype with.
* Webex
* Cost: Free
* Owned by Cisco.
* How many people: 100 * You can call-in (audio only) to a video meeting. * My thoughts: When you download the app (I did this on my iPhone) and start the sign up process, you will be asked an email address (which will be your user ID). When you get the email from Cisco Webex, and when you click on the link it will open up a browser window. You will complete the sign up process within the web browser, which I think can be confusing. Another confusing aspect is you’ll need to pick a meeting site. Most people wouldn’t expect that you’ll need to pick a meeting site, but just pick the one that’s suggested and you should be okay. After that you’re given a blank screen without additional onboarding information. For those of you who are not familiar with Webex I would recommend staying away, unless you like to figure out archaic UI/UX designs.* Starleaf

MICROSOFT SURFACE NEO: THE DUAL-SCREEN FUTURE OF WINDOWS 10XSource: Microsoft
In October of 2019 Microsoft unveiled its future: a new version of Windows called 10X that will run on Surface Neo and take advantage of dual-screen foldable designs. (The picture above shows the Bluetooth keyboard on top of one of the screens. The portion above the keyboard acts like a large TouchBar / touchpad.) Before we dive into Surface Neo and Windows 10X, let’s go back about ten years to September 2009. That’s when Microsoft unveiled its Courier concept: a fold-able dual 7-inch multi-touch tablet. Courier was similar, but different. Two separate screens that folds; that’s similar. But Courier was a concept to replace your notepad. As far as I know Microsoft did not design a separate keyboard for Courier. The Courier concept relied upon your fingers, but primarily a stylus. The Surface Neo is a design not only to replace the tablet, but also to replace the laptop. There was a lot of excitement around Courier — Dell, Intel, Nokia, HTC and many others — and a lot of us expected Microsoft to ship Courier in 2010.
Unfortunately Microsoft decided not to proceed. Everyone was disappointed because the Courier concept was one of those iPhone-like devices: a game changer.2009 Microsoft
Courier Concept
This time, with the Surface Neo, Microsoft seems to be serious about pushing forward and putting one into our hands in 2020. During the Surface Neo introduction Microsoft showcased working prototypes; Microsoft never did that with the Courier. Okay, let’s dive in. The Surface Neo features two separate 9-inch displays that fold out to a large tablet-class 13 inches. Microsoft designed an intricate hinge to enable the Surface Neo to fold into a variety of modes. With Surface Pro, Microsoft has been perfecting its ability to design functional and durable hinges and I expect the hinge design on the Surface Neo will be excellent. A couple of years ago, Wired published an article titled “The Story Behind the Surface Book’s Crazy NewHinge”
;
Microsoft put a lot of sweat and tears into designing and building the best hinges in the industry. Unlike most of the tablets that are available now where keyboard designs are generally afterthoughts, Microsoft designed a Bluetooth keyboard from the beginning that tightly integrates with the Surface Neo’s dual-screen. The Bluetooth keyboard locks into different positions using magnets: on the cover and in two different positions on a screen. Place the Bluetooth keyboard on the top portion of a screen and the display’s bottom portion becomes a trackpad; slide the keyboard down and the trackpad is now on top. That big trackpad also works like Apple’s Touch Bar, but bigger. Of course there is also a new stylus called the Surface Slim Pen that magnetically attaches to the Surface Neo. Speaking of Apple’s Touch Bar, the Surface Neo’s implementation looks to be more flexible: similar to the Touch Bar you can customize it to your liking, but just as importantly — maybe more? — you can get rid of it, by sliding up the Bluetooth keyboard. At least that’s what I’m assuming based on the information I’ve seen online. I am excited about the Surface Neo because of its flexibility: it can be used as a laptop or a tablet, but in a way that seems more usable to me. For instance, when I’m flying or in a cramped space I can use it as a small 9-inch laptop with the keyboard taking up part of the lower display. When I’m at a desk I can use it as a larger 13-inch laptop. In tablet mode, I can fold it in half to use it as a 9-inch tablet or a larger 13-inch one. The flexibility is quite ingenious. The Surface Neo hardware looks solid, but in order for the whole thing to work, the software has to work really well with a dual-screen device that can be used in many different ways. Microsoft seems to be going in the right direction with Windows 10X. Windows 10X Dual-screen App Patterns Microsoft recently shared its vision for how dual-screen apps might be used. The image above shows five different patterns: * In EXTENDED CANVAS the app is using both screens as one large one. Although there is a thick border in the middle, an extended Excel spreadsheet that helps the user prevent cells from being split by the bezel for example could work. * MASTER • DETAIL is a mode that can become quite popular. For instance, an email app with the list of emails on one side and the details on the other. Twitter feeds might be another good fit. RSSfeeds, too.
* TWO PAGE will be perfect for reading books, magazines, long articles on the web, and other documents. * DUAL VIEW: When you want to see two versions of the same type of content side-by-side. For example, two images with the original on one side and the edited version on the other side. Another example could be a list of restaurants on one side and a map view on the other. * COMPANION PANE should be a good fit for photo editors with the photo on one side and all the tools on the other. Games requiring multiple controls will definitely work in this mode. Microsoft details the company’s recommendations of how developers can take full advantage of the many modes available in Windows 10X on dual-screen devices like the Surface Neo: “Introduction todual-screen devices
“. Like
the hardware, Windows 10X seems to be flexible, enough to take full advantage of the many physical modes including keyboard locations ofthe Surface Neo.
IPS? OLED? Either would be good. Although dual OLED screens would be fantastic, it might price the Surface Neo beyond the reach of most of us who are interested. My guess is IPS LCD standard, with a premiumversion with OLED.
Knowing Microsoft the Surface Neo, keyboard and stylus, with enough computing power, RAM, and storage will require a significant financial investment. US$2500? Microsoft is expected to ship the Surface Neo some time during the holiday season in 2020. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on one, if I can afford it. APPLE LIGHTNING PORT, CABLES, AND EARTH Apple has had proprietary ports and therefore cables for its iPhone since June 29, 2007. The day the original iPhone went on sale in the U.S. And since that day hundreds of millions of low-quality Apple-made cables have been thrown out and have ended up in landfills. All over the world. Search for “broken lightning cable”
and click on Images and you’ll get a good idea of how poorly made Apple-branded Lightning cables are. The world is trying to move toward a global standard for smartphone ports and cables and that is USB-C. (For a thorough introduction to USB-C, hop on over to PCMag: “What Is USB-C? An Explainer“.) But it
has been bumpy even in Android land where there are still about a billion (?) Android smartphones with micro-USB ports. However new Android smartphones have been increasingly ditching micro-USB in favor of USB-C. Why is moving to a global standard for smartphone ports agood thing?
Every day millions of people all over the world switch from Android to iPhone or iPhone to Android. Every time that happens people go buy extra cables: for different parts of the home, the car, short cables, long cables, etc. Got a new iPhone? Well congratulations you’re Lightning cable will need to be replaced sooner than you think. Why? I don’t know really, but Apple is known to make wimpy Lightning cables. That’s why people go out and get more durable ones. I like Anker: cheaper and more durable than the ones by Apple. Most likely the torn Lightning cable will be thrown into the trash and then end up in a landfill nearby. Multiply this by hundreds of millions. Now imagine a world where all smartphones have a USB-C port. A lot less buying and therefore a lot less trash. Of course even if Apple adopted USB-C for the iPhone the cables probably would be of low durability making you get better ones. But in the unlikely event Apple replaces the Lightning port with USB-C the initial chaos of throwing out Lightning cables and purchasing USB-C cables would be bad for the environment. Eventually though, a USB-C standardized smartphone industry would be a good thing. Apple talks a big talk about it being pro-green, pro-earth. Apple has done quite a bit I’m not denying that. Apple uses a lot of recyclable materials like glass, aluminum, stainless steel for the iPhone. Can’t say the same for other brands that use a lot of plastic. I don’t care for more plastic in our world; I think we have more than enough! But Apple can certainly do more and can start by moving away from proprietary ports. It is time to put away proprietary and focus more on sustainability or perhaps even survivability. Apple is always innovating. I have a hunch Apple is up to something and something big. There have been rumors of a port-less iPhone in the work. In the near future I think Apple will announce an iPhone without any ports. No Lightning. No USB-C. No nothing. There are challenges, big ones, to overcome but I think a port-less iPhone is doable and I think good for the environment. With WiFi 6 hitting theoretical speeds of up to 1Gbps I think data transfers between iPhone and Mac or another iPhone will be fast enough. Entire backup and restores could be accomplished fairly quickly too. Of course connections need to be more resilient, reliable, and secure than they are today. WiFi and Bluetooth could be enough. But there is also 5G: you could do iCloud-based backups and restores in not a lot of time. Charging will be wireless. There is nodoubt there.
With a port-less design there would be no need for cables to transfer data or to charge. No cables to buy and no cables to throw away. That could be a very good thing. P.S. Now if smartphone brands — I’m looking squarely at you Apple — could make their phones durable enough to survive dozens of falls from four to five feet onto concrete and other hard surfaces (self-healing titanium?) we wouldn’t need to get plastic cases. Hundreds of millions of them. Bought and then thrown away… Jin Kim Uncategorized 2020.01.172020.02.243 Minutes
2020: THE YEAR POWERFUL, MODULAR, SMALL FORM FACTOR (SFF) GAMING DESKTOPS BECOME A THINGRazer Tomahawk
The Razer Tomahawk is a small form factor (SFF) gaming desktop. Small and gaming? They usually don’t go well together, but thanks to Intel’s Ghost Canyon NUC 9 Extreme Compute Element the Tomahawk can be equipped with up to an Intel Core i9-9980HK 8-coreCPU
,
which sports a base frequency of 2.40 GHz that can turbo boost up to 5.00 GHz. The 16-thread 14-nm CPU has a TDP of 45W. Intel’s NUC 9 Extreme Compute Element can also be pre-installed with up to 64GB of 2400MHz RAM using SODIMMs and 2x M.2 Gen3 NVMe SSDs. Razer adds a power supply unit (PSU), a graphics card (GPU), and fans.*

Intel NUC 9 Pro Compute Element (H-Series) Side Interior Image Check out the NUC 9 Compute Element: it is upgradeable and sports a neat and simple design. Motherboards and all the stuff packed into them usually don’t look all that nice even when you add color and tidy up the cables and tubes, but the NUC should look cool in a minimalist matte way in a glass enclosure. That graphics card though; think NVIDIA RTX 20-series GPU like the RTX2080 Super
.
In a SFF enclosure. We’re talking serious graphics specs for high-fps gaming at ultra settings. According to The Verge,
Intel is planning to offer upgrades for at least the next two years. And since the Razer Tomahawk takes dual-slot GPUs whatever NVIDIA brings out should fit, as long as you have a big-enough PSU.*

Razer Tomahawk N1 SFF Chassis This is the future of modular “desktop” computers: SFF enclosures, Intel NUC Compute Element, and a powerful GPU. It’s got it all: small, easily upgradeable, easy on the eyes, and powerful. It would be great to see major case brands come out with sleek minimalist SSF enclosures for Intel’s NUC Compute Element. Add a gaming monitor like the Samsung Odyssey G9 and you’re all set. 2020 seems to be when all the necessary components come together to make powerful modular SSF gaming desktops a thing. I’m looking forward to it.Jin Kim Design

SAMSUNG ODYSSEY G9: 49-INCH QLED CURVED 240HZ GAMING MONITOR Samsung went full steam ahead into the gaming world with its CRG9 monitor last year, and this year the company has upped the ante: the Odyssey G9, a 49-inch curved LCD beast of a monitor.*

The pixel format is the same at 5120×1440; look at it as putting two 2560×1440 screens side by side. There are several other 49-inch curved monitors with a 5120×1440 pixel format. Some sport 60Hz, others like the CRG9 feature 120Hz or 144Hz, but none go nuts like the Odyssey G9 with up to 240Hz. Combine 240Hz with a fast 1ms response time, with both AMD FreeSync 2 and NVIDIA G-Sync compatibility and there is no other gaming monitor quite like the G9. The Odyssey G9 is more curvy than other curved monitors with a curvature of 1000R; most other 49-inch curved monitor including the CRG9 sport a less curvy 1800R curvature. The more curvy design is er designed to to give the crazy rich gamer a more immersive experience by wrapping all those pixels around your field of view. The specs of course are quite future-proof when it comes to gaming, but I also dig the ultra-curved design, the white color, and that Tony Stark-ish arc reactor-like thing on the back. Check out Samsung’s product page for the G9 as well as the smaller G7’s.

2020 DELL XPS 13 – 16:10 DISPLAY WITH THINNER BEZELS_via_ The Verge
:
The new 2020 Dell XPS 13 sports a slightly larger screen with a 13.4-inch (the 2019 XPS 13 was 13.3 inches) LCD. The display gets a little taller with an aspect ratio of 16:10, instead of 16:9. The taller ratio is better for productivity apps since you get see to more information vertically. Of course 16:9 is better if watching 16:9 video content is your thing. I prefer taller, but that’s me. And the tallness of the display has squeezed the bottom bezel to match the thickness of the top and sides, which is pretty thin. The 16:10 aspect ratio entered the scene way back in 2006; check out “Notebook PCsGoing Wide to 16:10
“.
I like there to be some bezels on a laptop. If the bezels are too thin, it is very difficult to keep fingerprint off of the screen when you’re opening it or adjusting the angle. We aren’t there yet, but I think the bezels on the 2020 Dell XPS 13 are thin enough. The 16:10 13.4-inch LCD comes in two varieties: a standard 1920×1200 without touch, a touchscreen 1920×1200, and a touchscreen 3840×2400 with HDR400. You can drive external displays with two Thunderbolt 3-enabled USB-C ports; there is one on each side. Another improvement: the keyboard is larger, stretching across the entire device. A full-sized keyboard with enough room between keys is a good thing. I don’t like it when computer brands mess with keyboard sizes: the size of keys, the size of the space between the keys, weird shapes for shift keys, etc. Just keep it the regular size. It is not broken so don’t try to fix it. And if you can’t fit a regular-sized keyboard into the chassis, make the chassis bigger. Or do what IBM did way back when: use a proper butterfly mechanism (not the kind Apple used). The 2020 Dell XPS 13 will be available on January 7 with a starting price of US$999. An Ubuntu 18.04 LTS-powered Developer Edition for two hundred more ($1119) will be released on February 4.Jin Kim Laptop

2021 CADILLAC ESCALADE: 38-INCH CURVED OLED DISPLAY General Motors (GM) announced on December 16, 2019 that the 2021 Cadillac Escalade will showcase a 38-inch curved OLED dash with twice the pixel density of a 4K TV.
The 2021 Escalade is expected to be unveiled in February 2020 and be available for purchase in late 2020. A single, massive display is a step forward in automotive interior design. Take a look at the dash in most cars and SUVs today and you’ll notice a hodge-podge of displays with different sizes, different technologies, different locations. Among mass produced vehicles, the Tesla Model 3 is a lone exception with its center-mounted rectangular 15-inch touch display. Even the Model S and Model X have two separate displays. A simpler design is generally better, and I believe good design is easy to use, but also easy and affordable to fix. Unfortunately, most vehicle dashes are both terribly difficult and expensive to fix. If there is ghosting, some driver IC issues, or a simple crack on the massive 38-inch curved OLED display in the 2021 Escalade, it will most likely be very expensive to fix if out of warranty. A singular, massive, integrated display will probably be the trend for upscale vehicles, but what I’d like to see is a design where you simply plug in an iPad or similar tablet. You get identification (fingerprint or facial recognition), touch interactivity, and if the tablet breaks you can replace it relatively simply and affordably.Jin Kim Automobile

RUMOR: APPLE DEVELOPING MINI-LED DISPLAY TECHNOLOGY According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will incorporate mini-LED display technology to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro in 2020 or 2021. > Kuo has said that Apple is interested in adopting mini LED screen > panels as they offer a rich wide color gamut, high contrast ratio, > high dynamic range, and localized dimming. mini LED is also believed > to result in thinner panels that are more power efficient, and they > do not suffer from burn-in like OLED. > Chance Miller, 9to5Mac>
Shrink LEDs down to the size of a sub-pixel and you get mini-LEDs. Each red, green, blue sub-pixel now has brightness control, which means high contrast ratios, wide color gamuts, high dynamic ranges. The term “local dimming” will need to be changed because with mini-LED technology each sub-pixel can be dimmed; can you imagine how brilliant photographs and videos will be? The structure is simplified compared to OLEDs so it theoretically is easier and cheaper to manufacture. And because LEDs are semiconductors they will last much longer than OLEDs. mini LED still need to be shrunk down further to incorporate into smaller displays like on a 12.9-inch iPad Pro or 16-inch MacBook Pro. So for now mini-LED displays can be seen on large TVs, which havelarge sub-pixels.
Looking forward to what Apple has in store in 2020, or 2021. Jin Kim Uncategorized 2019.12.282019.12.281 Minute
