Save the plastics! Design Museum Gent and S.M.A.K. are working on an inventory of the plastics in their collections. It is a widely-known fact that plastic contributes to environmental pollution. By now everyone is aware that plastics take more time to decompose, are more difficult to recycle and have caused a plastic soup in our oceans. KNOLL INTERNATIONAL IN THE UCO BUILDING IN GHENT On furniture and politics. The talented American designer Florence Knoll (née Schust, 1917-2019) died in January this year. She was the wife and business partner of Hans Knoll (1914-1955), who founded the famous Knoll furniture company in 1938. Florence Knoll created the furniture brand’s signature style, designing a comprehensivefurniture
GEO HENDERICK. LA MERVEILLEUSE ARCHITECTURE Geo Henderick. La merveilleuse architecture. Geo Henderick read architecture at the Gent university. One of his teachers was the city's architect Charles Van Rysselberghe. His designs and buildings were the fruit of his idealistic and creative mind. His draughtsmanship is expressed in utopian designs of skyscrapers, towerbuildings, etc.

Compared with wood, ceramics, silver or glass, plastics are a relatively new material in heritage collections. Design Museum Gent and S.M.A.K. jointly preserve approximately 4,000 objects that completely or partially are made of plastic, which is why they decided to launch a plastics project. BIKE TO THE FUTURE
Bike to the Future is a joint effort of Design Museum Gent and the IMF Foundation, which offers a glimpse of the future of the bike. Both talent and inventiveness are the driving forces behind this exhibition, where brilliant ideas and ingenious prototypes are key. ‘THE FOUR CONTINENTS’ CHANDELIER The most beautiful room in the rococo city palace which the museum has called home since 1922 is the dining room on the ground floor. Here, you can see one of the masterpieces of the collection, i.e., the imposing wood-carved chandelier, that was designed and carved by the Ghent sculptor, Jan Frans Allaert (1703-1779) in 1770.
