In mobile AR apps, however, that same 4-6 inch piece of glass also serves as a window into the world, forcing people to divide their attention between the interactive “scene” displayed on their device, and the traditional, non-AR parts of a phone’s UI. LIBRARY - GOOGLE DESIGN The field of conversation design applies the intricacies of human speech patterns to the limitations of technology—teaching computers to communicate more like people (and not the other way around). CONTROL AND SIMPLICITY IN THE AGE OF AI The tradeoffs between simplicity and the complexity of control are context-dependent. EVOLVING THE GOOGLE IDENTITY A new brand identity makes Google more accessible and useful to our users. Google is not a conventional company. Because the field of offline design is new, designers have room for innovation and creativity—providing notifications and options that best suit the needs of their audience. Google designers Rachel IIan Simpson and Pendar Yousefi developed these Material Design guidelines to help you build better offline capabilities into your globalproducts.
VARIABLE FONTS ARE HERE TO STAY In late 2016, Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, and Google presented a remarkable solution: OpenType variable fonts. One variable font file can contain every font in a traditional static font family. This is an immediate win in terms of raw file size, as it compactly packages the entire font family. The more static fonts that are replaced, the more STICKY CONVERSATIONS Sticky Conversations. At first glance, stickers are easy to dismiss. They’re small, often silly. A miniature image of a sloth surfing a pizza slice doesn’t necessarily prompt deep artistic contemplation. But each image is in fact a microcosm of expression, packing an emotional punch into an illustration no bigger than a thumbprint. MAKING MOTION MEANINGFUL By Sharon Harris and John Schlemmer. Motion is essential to bringing digital products to life. Something as simple as tapping a card to expand and reveal more information is made better by fluid animation. New content is introduced, shared elements move into their new position, and the user is given guidance with a clear focal point. Why Google Needs Art Directors … according to Google art directors A cadre of art directors are rethinking the kinds of images seen across Google’s digital products, pushing the envelope by working with exciting new illustrators and photographers and making their work a part of the company’s visual ecosystem. We spoke with three of them—former magazine photo editor Emily Blank and former print designer Jefferson Cheng, who shape the look of photography and illustration across Google’s products, and Shannon May, a former newspaper illustrator who worked on visuals for Messaging and is now art director for ads—about navigating this new frontier and creating a visual language that makes Google look and feel like Google.Editorial

Happy anniversary, Google Fonts! Today, Google Fonts turns ten, and to celebrate they’re launching a new site and updated catalog! The team spent many months gathering feedback from users and type enthusiasts alike, in order to understand what could be improved. One example of this feedback loop in action is that a feature like downloading fonts is a whole lot easier (it’s now possible to download an entire font family directly from any specimen page). Head over to fonts.google.com to test everything out, and while you’re there note the updated color scheme, which now meets accessibility standards. Bravo! Wait, did we mention variable fonts? Not to bury the lede, but the new and refreshed Google Fonts also supports variable fonts. This new type of font technology can help make the web faster, as well as more beautiful—which is always a solid goal. Congrats, Google Fonts. Here’s to ten more years!fonts.google.com12/17/2019
The Bauhaus Turns 100: A Reading List It’s been a big year for Bauhaus enthusiasts: The famous design school turned 100, an occasion marked by everything from the opening of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation in Germany to a very special Google Doodle. For the centenary, Google Arts & Culture also launched Bauhaus Everywhere, an online museum chock-full of archival images and new perspectives. And we considered how designers can still learn from the Bauhaus, in an excellent, in-depth essay by Google UX Director Jens Riegelsberger. (Key takeaway: “The exactitude of science and engineering is feared to remove the room for creative exploration. The Bauhaus, on the other hand, embraced science, engineering, and new methods of production.”) Still hungry for more? Our friends over at AIGA Eye on Design programmed a week of Bauhaus stories, exploring everything from the school’s gender politics to its typography. Happy reading, and happy centennial.09/26/2019
Add Your Voice to Google’s UX Tools Survey Designers, tell us: What tools do you swear by? How do you collaborate with teammates? What convinces you to adopt a new process? Google is compiling a state-of-the-industry report on how the design community gets work done, with a focus on the most valuable UX tools. We define “UX tools” as any product or system designers use to create, review, or test new work and prototypes. This could include Sketch, InVision, Framer, UserTesting.com, Material Design, or Dedoose, but we’re also interested in hearing about your collaboration and communication tools, like Slack or Google Docs. It’s anonymous, but the results will be shared with the broader design and product development community, and—we think—help improve the way we all work. The survey takes about 15 minutes and is open until October 14. Take the UX Tools survey.08/13/2019
