MY LAST CONFESSION
For the last three years, I have enjoyed writing this blog about my transition from a local preaching ministry into an international missions ministry. I’ve tried to speak boldly and honestly to, and on behalf of, those who serve in congregational ministry roles. In addition, I’ve tried to share some theological and practical perspectives on ministry from the global church. At times, I think I’ve done well, and at other times not so much. 3May

“SEX-TRAFFICKING, SYSTEMIC INJUSTICE, & PREACHING? REALLY? A WORDFROM CHRIS ALTROCK
In a World of oppression and evil crying out for action, why would anyone think preaching is an adequate response for anyone? My friend Chis Altrock still thinks it is and I agree. Chris is no naïve novice with a starry-eyed soap bubble hope destined to explode at the least resistance. This guy has been in the trenches where the church and culture intersect with nothing but the gospel for years. He has seen the good, bad, and ugly and stuck it out. 1May

“WHY I STILL PREACH” BY JIM MARTIN I’ve only gotten to know Jim Martin in the last few years, but in my eyes, from our first encounter, he has risen like a skyrocket . (BTW, is there another kind of rocket, like a land-rocket or sea-rocket? Never mind). A mature, highly-experienced congregational minister with what appears to be a cynicism-free heart, is hard person to find. Yet,this is Jim. 2

GRADY KING ON “WHY I’M STILL PREACHING” Last month I posted a series of entries from young preachers about why they love preaching. In a time of disenchantment from many young people with “institutional” church, the role of preacher has fallen on hard times. However, while I think it is helpful to hear from those going against the trend and embracing the preacher role, I think we also need to hear from those who have done this for a good while and still find it rewarding and fulfilling. 1Apr

STRUGGLING TO CELEBRATE OTHERS’ SUCCESS “I’ve got great news,” my mentor elder said as he sat down at the lunch table for our weekly meeting. “My wife’s doctor is going to be baptized Sunday.” I was thrilled. Really, I was. But pure joy wasn’t exactly the emotion I felt. This man’s radiant wife had been battling MS for several years. I knew she had been talking to her neurologist about the Lord for some time and I had even been praying for her efforts to lead him to faith.1

DISCIPLESHIP IS NOT A OPTIONAL SECOND LEVEL OF CHRISTIAN For years I have been a huge fan of Dallas Willard. His practical wisdom, combined with deep humility, has helped me more than any other author to understand the process of spiritual development. He has done more than any other author to help me understand discipleship and the ways Western culture, and much of contemporary western theology, subverts formation in Christ. However, his writing is difficult tofollow at times. 2

SCATOLOGICAL ESCHATOLOGY Cussing is hip these day for Christians, so it would seem. Dropping a few shocking words in the company of the cool is a way of saying, “I may love Jesus, but I’m no uptight church-lady.” It’s an adolescent behavior I’ve indulged more than I’d like to admit through my life. It’s a rebellious impulse that flaunts our freedom. It’s ugly and really shouldn’t be part of the life of a disciple.1

MENTAL MASS MURDER
“Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.” --1 John 3:15 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. 2Apr

CAN I GET A WITNESS? I HOPE SO. I have a friend who use to work in a Christian book store. One thing he learned quickly was how much each church tradition has it’s own language. Pentecostals talk about a someone being “Spirit-filled.” Baptists want to know if you are “born again.” Folks from Churches of Christ ask if you are a “member of the church.” Each group has specialized definitions for those expressions which make no sense outside their community. To understand what is being said you must know their group story. 3Blog Archive
