I HEARD THE BLUEBIRDS SING The BMI award-winning I Heard the Bluebirds Sing topped the country charts in 1957; in the decades since, the song with its trademark bluegrass elements of banjo and guitar, brisk tempo, and close-harmony vocals, has become beloved around the world. Hod Pharis recorded his tune in 1952, with Anne Little, on a 78-rpm recording for the Aragonlabel.

My Sister and I is one of many hits composed by husband and wife duo Alex Kramer and Joan Whitney. The song was inspired by the 1941 American bestseller and controversial WWII diary My Sister and I, which was allegedly written by 12-year-old Dutch boy Dirk van der Heide, and recounted his escape to America with his little sister Keetje after surviving the German invasion of Rotterdam. JE NE SUIS QU’UNE CHANSON Je ne suis qu’une chanson was one of recording artist Ginette Reno’s top hits, helping relaunch her career by climbing the charts in 1980. The song’s writer, Diane Juster, won the Félix Award for best song of the year at the ADISQ Awards in October 1980, while Reno won for best album. Home for a Rest, a rollicking Irish-flavoured song that is played at celebrations from university parties to weddings, began life during a tour by Spirit of the West in the United Kingdom. THE RED RIVER VALLEY Red River Valley was first recorded in 1925, by cowboy singer Carl Sprague, and Gene Autry popularized it on film as early as 1936. Red River Valley has been featured in a multitude of western films, including the landmark pictures “The Grapes of Wrath” and “TheOx-Box Incident.”

Written by Pierre Sénécal, the song features the organ, an instrument popular in 1960s pop and rock music, as the dominant instrument. It opens with an organ motif in a minor key and abruptly shifts to the main organ theme before the vocals enter, punctuated by insistent, fast, repeated organ chords.OH WHAT A FEELING

JE REVIENS CHEZ NOUS The times and fashions were changing in his homeland, and in March of 1968, Jean-Pierre Ferland returned from Paris and sang Je reviens chez nous for the first time to an emotional Quebec audience. PUT YOUR HEAD ON MY SHOULDER His inspiration came from his fans, whom he would observe in the audience during his performances. “I was very much aware of the ambience of these record hopsthat was a room full of kids, and a lot of ballads, and everyone was holding each other, and I am up there singing alone to all of these teenagers and everybody’s head was on each others’ shoulders.MOMMY DADDY
