TASTE OF THE FAIR OPENS MAY 20 Courtesy photo. East Texas State Fair is hosting Taste of the Fair opens May 20 and runs the last two weekends in May 2021. Times are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 20 through Sunday, May 23 and Thursday, May 27 through Sunday, May 30. The event features many of Tyler’s fair food favorites including fair classics such as corn dogs, funnel FIND HISTORIC TREASURES AT FAMOUS HENDERSON HOUSE Find Historic Treasures at Famous Henderson House. A historical treasure awaits visitors to Henderson, Texas, at the 1855 Howard-Dickinson House Museum at 501 South Main Street. The house bears the names of the two families who lived there during its 165-year history, the Howard family from 1855 to 1905 and the Dickinson family from 1905 to 1950. WEATHERSPOON PLACES 'THE SHOT' STILL REMEMBERED TODAY On September 4, 1999, the fledgling Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) experienced a legendary moment. Playing for New York Liberty, Teresa Weatherspoon of Pineland/Sabine County, Texas, sank a shot at half court with 2.4 seconds left on the clock to win (68-67) against the Houston Comets. FIBER ART: FUN, FABULOUS, AND FUNCTIONAL Fiber art starts with nature’s ingredients including cotton, flax stems (linen), silkworm cocoons, and sheep’s wool. Wendy Forrest of Amanda Hope Yarn in Nacogdoches began dying Merino wool because she wanted to create subtle yarn colors with a soft sheen. A model shows one of Midge Jackson’s woven shawls. SAMUEL COUNTEE’S PAINTINGS CONTINUE TO INSPIRE Samuel Albert Countee was born in Marshall, Texas, on April 1, 1909, and eventually emerged as one of the nation’s most inspiring young artists of the 1930s. BLACK-EYED PEAS: AN ATHENS ORIGINAL Henry was soon dubbed the "Black-Eyed Pea King of East Texas." News traveled fast and before too long, Athens was busily supplying black-eyed peas far beyond East Texas. Canning plants opened in the 1930s and ‘40s to meet the demand. By the 1970s, Athens had gained the title of "Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the World." 'LUCKY STRIKE GIRL' BORN IN CHEROKEE COUNTY Janice Jarratt, known as the "Lucky Strike Girl" was born in October 19, 1914, in Jacksonville, Texas, Cherokee County. Her father was C.D. Jarratt of Craft, known for shipping the first carload of tomatoes from Cherokee County on June 14, 1897. Jarratt grew up in San Antonio, and later became the "Sweetheart of the Texas Centennial" at the UNCLE DUDLEY MADE RADIO HISTORY Hackworth was born August 22, 1913, in Klondike (Delta County), Texas. He got into the ever expanding "show biz" that was radio broadcasting so popular in that time. His radio career began in Greenville, Texas, in 1931. Soon, he was known far and wide as a beloved radio personality called "Uncle Dudley." Hackworth switched to working at a IN MEMORY OF SHORTY THE SQUIRREL In Memory of Shorty the Squirrel. Shorty the squirrel lived outside the Smith County courthouse for 15 years. He was a panhandler and a beggar, but beloved by the town — and particularly by Miss Geneva Pillow, who fed him daily. The citizens of Tyler honored Shorty with free medical care, a special pedestrian crossing, and a lower speedlimit
