HI, I’M CONNOR
I’m the cofounder of BaseLang , which offers unlimited one-on-one Spanish tutoring online. Since launching in 2016, the team has grown to over 250 people. Bootstrapped, profitable, andproud.
I’m best known for my documentary, Spanish in a Month, where I became
conversational in Spanish in a month. I’ve done angel investments (a few small deals in LATAM), turnarounds. Not my thing. Long-term, my focus is on three big issues: * EDUCATION. We know the current model doesn’t work – it kills creativity and curiosity. But we don’t have model that is significantly better, while being non-radical enough to actually be widely implemented. This is a big, hairy issue I will tackle once I have the resources to do it justice. * IMPROVING RELATIONSHIPS. Life is relationships. And unfortunately, most people aren’t very good at them (see: divorce rates). Not only is your relationship one of the biggest influences on your life and happiness, it has downstream effects for your children. Children learn relationship habits from their parents (not including potential developmental trauma), so each marriage improved has a multi-generation downstream effect. Good news is, the many of the same principles can be applied at work, further improving quality of life (and productivity). This is where my focus is currently, with a new company I’m working on. * MENTAL HEALTH. Specifically, applications of MDMA for trauma and PTSD, and psilocybin/LSD for depression, anxiety, and addiction. Good overview of the potential impact of these medicines here.
And it’s not just people who _need_ these treatments whose daily quality of life can be dramatically improved. The reality is, everyone has trauma (even if you don’t think you do, speaking from experience), since trauma is not just large one-off events. Improvements in mental health also help with #2 above, relationships. While I’d love to contribute to humans being alive (issues like disease, the environment, etc) and healthy, it’s not my wheelhouse. So my focus is, how can we make the most of that life? How can we create meaning and happiness? Beyond “work”, I’m an amateur chef, amateur somm (Bordeaux, please), human behavior nerd, outdoors enthusiast, lifter, language learner, former biohacker turned just-get-the-fundamentals-right, occasional skydiver, former rower, and owner of a beautiful goldenretriever .
Here are some fundamental principles I have found true that I liveby.
I live in Lisbon. I previously lived in Medellin, Colombia for fouryears.
