Summary. Solitary bone plasmacytoma is a bone tumor that arises from plasma cells. Plasmacytomas can occur in any bone, but they are most common in the spine. At the Spine Hospital at the Neurological Institute of New York, we specialize in spinal plasmacytomas. MINIMALLY INVASIVE SPINAL FUSION: THORACIC AND LUMBAR What is Minimally Invasive Spinal Fusion? Minimally = as little as possible Invasive = intrusive. Spinal = having to do with the spine Fusion = a process in which bones “fuse,” or grow together into one bone Thoracic = having to do with the spine in the upper and middle back Lumbar = having to do with the spine in the lower back. Spinal fusion is a procedure in which grafted (transplantedFLATBACK SYNDROME
Flatback syndrome is a condition in which the lower spine loses some of its normal curvature. It is a type of sagittal imbalance, or front-to-back imbalance in the spine. Normally, the spine has several gentle front-to-back curves. The lumbar (lower) spine has a lordosis, or inward curve. The thoracic (middle) spine has a kyphosis, oroutward
BURST FRACTURE
Burst = to break forcefully apart. Fracture = a break in a bone. A burst fracture is an injury in which the vertebra, the primary bone of the spine, breaks in multiple directions. The bones of the spine have two main sections. The vertebral arch is a ring-shaped section that forms the roof of the spinal canal and protects the spinal cord. LIPOMYELOMENINGOCELE Lipomyelomeningocele is a condition in which an abnormal growth of fat attaches to the spinal cord and its membranes. Lipomyelomeningocele arises from an event very early in an embryo’s development. About the third week after conception, a sheet of cells called the neural plate folds to form a tube called the neural tube. PUTTING SOME MUSCLE BEHIND SPINAL STENOSIS SURGERY Traditionally, spinal surgeons would perform a procedure known as “open lumbar decompression.”. In this procedure, the surgeon would first need to move out of the way the muscles, known as paraspinal muscles, that cover the bones of the spine. The surgeon would then be able to access the vertebrae. In order to have full access to thespine
TRANSFORAMINAL LUMBAR INTERBODY FUSION (TLIF) What is a MIS Transforaminal Interbody Lumbar Fusion (TLIF)? Transforaminal = through the foramina, openings through which nerve roots exit the spine Interbody = between the vertebral bodies Lumbar = having to do with the spine in the lower back Fusion = a process in which bones “fuse,” or grow together into one bone. A Transforaminal Interbody Lumbar Fusion treats spinal instability orARACHNOID CYST
Summary. Arachnoid = one of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord Cyst = a collection of fluid. Arachnoid cysts are fluid-filled sacs that may develop in a membrane around the brain or spinal cord. At the Spine Hospital at the Neurological Institute of New York, we specialize in spinal arachnoid cysts. GET EXCITED: SPINE SURGEONS ARE NAMED ‘TOP DOCTORS’ FOR 2019Jul. 3, 2019
People often think that the same thing happening over and over again is boring and predictable. But for us, repetition can be _exciting_ when it reaffirms our spine surgeons’ long-standing tradition ofexcellence.
We’re thrilled when our spine surgeons speak at the same national conferences, about the same spine-related topics.
Or when they repeat the same mentorship activities with residents each year, like Dr. Neil Feldstein’s annual tribute collage.
And we could not be more proud than when they repeatedly earn prestigious distinctions like Top Doctor. This year we’re pleased to say that several of our spine surgeons at The Spine Hospital at the Neurological Institute of New York were once again named Top Doctor. The Top Doctor guidebooks , published annually by the research company Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. , provide patients with a trusted list of outstanding doctors, both regionally and nationally, across many medical specialties, including neurosurgery. There is a national guide called_ America’s Top Doctors,_ plus regional guides for various areas in the United States, including _Top Doctors: New York Metro Area_. There is also _America’s Top Doctors for Cancer_. A doctor can be featured in more than one guide, and several of our spine surgeons are listed in one or more of these TopDoctor guides:
Spine surgeons listed in _America’s Top Doctors_ for 2019: * Dr. Paul C. McCormick,MD, MPH, FAANS,
Director
* Dr. Neil A. Feldstein, MD,
FACS
Spine surgeons listed in _America’s Top Doctors for Cancer_ for2019:
* Dr. Paul C. McCormick, MD, MPH, FAANS
* Dr. Neil A. Feldstein, MD,
FACS
Spine surgeons listed in _Top Doctors: New York Metro Area_ for 2019: * Dr. Paul C. McCormick, MD, MPH, FAANS
* Dr. Peter D. Angevine, MD, MPH
* Dr. Neil A. Feldstein, MD,
FACS
* Dr. Christopher E. Mandigo, MD, FAANS
* Dr. Donald O. Quest, MD, FACS
These trusted guides are created using a robust process. Castle Connolly first asks physicians to nominate fellow physicians they consider the most outstanding in their medical specialty. (Physicians, of course, cannot nominate themselves.) Each year nearly 100,000 doctors are nominated, and those nominees then undergo vigorous vetting. During the vetting stage, a physician-led team carefully examines the qualifications, accomplishments, training, education and much more for each nominee. Every detail is scrutinized to ensure that only the most outstanding doctors earn the honor. Nominees who pass the vetting process earn the Top Doctor distinction. It should be noted that although Top Doctor is a prestigious distinction, there are excellent doctors who may not be listed in the guides despite providing compassionate care to patients every day. The lack of a Top Doctor distinction does not suggest a doctor lacks talent, skill or experience. The purpose of the Top Doctor guides is to help patients in their search for the right doctor for them. As you can see, some things are worth repeating, and earning the Top Doctor distinction is one of them. Congratulations to all our 2019 TopDoctor recipients!

California to New York: It’s a distance of about 3,000 miles. In May of 2016, high school sophomore Jake Greenberg and his parents made theround trip twice.
Jake’s symptoms had started in January, months before the family’s trips to New York City. The 16-year-old started experiencing back pain and swelling. As a diver who competed at regional and national levels, Jake first thought he had “_tweaked_” his back while training or diving. Then he began experiencing leg cramps. Soon, his hands were shaking—was this anxiety, or part of a set of neurological symptoms? Continue Reading →Continue Reading
