THROUGH THE GREEN DOOR, BY MARC MCANDREWS The bikers were out front of their rooms as well, a few doors down from mine. At first it was just two of them, like a couple of off-color raccoons, their faces a patchwork of sunburn and bright-white, bare-skinned eye sockets, acquired by riding through the desert all day with sunglasses on. From the Ocean to the sea, the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, where he learned how to dive (Cannes) or near Lisbon, where he lost his friend and diver colleague Philippe Cousteau. AMMONIA IN CYANOTYPE TONINGS Ammonia in cyanotype tonings. Writer Gudrum Mebs portrait. Completely bleached cyanotype in ammonia and slightly tanned with coffee. Dimension: 17x25cm. The majority of cyanotype tonings use two baths: a tanning agent as tea, coffee or, obviously, the tannic acid itself and an alkali, usually sodium carbonate. BASICITY AND COLOR OF CYANOTYPE Near Gare de Lyon. Cianotype 6x6cm on Schoeller Durex 17x17cm paper. Some weeks ago, talking with famous French palladium printer Jean Claude Mougin, we started discussing about cyanotype print hue. In that occasion, he said that when cyanotype tends to violet is because paper is probably basic and could contain a buffer of carbonates. Its only protection from the sun was a thin plastic sleeve on which a price tag of £12 had been stuck. Carbon print is brilliant in shadows and opaque in lights, for that reason it is possible to obtain the best result for the entire gamut. The print is not constituted by a metallic depot (silver, platinum, etc) that penetrates into the fibers of the paper, but by a pigmented, more or less thick gelatin layer fixed on the paper. PAPER FOR CYANOTYPE: THE WINNER IS BRISTOL 350G Paper for cyanotype: the winner is Bristol 350g. Blue print of the series "Il vuoto che mi hai lasciato", size 6x12cm on Bristol 10x12cm. Cyanotypes have deep blacks on Bristol 350g, they are brilliant, detailed, highly contrasted. The color is a pleasant deep blue, almost violet. AMMONIA IN CYANOTYPE TONINGS Ammonia in cyanotype tonings. Writer Gudrum Mebs portrait. Completely bleached cyanotype in ammonia and slightly tanned with coffee. Dimension: 17x25cm. The majority of cyanotype tonings use two baths: a tanning agent as tea, coffee or, obviously, the tannic acid itself and an alkali, usually sodium carbonate. PAPER FOR CYANOTYPE: THE WINNER IS BRISTOL 350G Paper for cyanotype: the winner is Bristol 350g. Blue print of the series "Il vuoto che mi hai lasciato", size 6x12cm on Bristol 10x12cm. Cyanotypes have deep blacks on Bristol 350g, they are brilliant, detailed, highly contrasted. The color is a pleasant deep blue, almost violet. Carbon print is brilliant in shadows and opaque in lights, for that reason it is possible to obtain the best result for the entire gamut.
