After the last dig in 1993, the Paleo Crossing artifacts collection—numbering more than 10,000 pieces—waited in Museum drawers for researchers with new ideas for teasing out their secrets. In 2000, as a junior in high school, Metin Eren joined the Museum’s summer field program to exercise his early interest in archaeology. When the partial skeleton was found, it was the oldest and most complete early human ancestor ever found, with 40 percent of the skeleton unearthed. About the Society The Kirtlandia Society was organized in 1976 to support the research and educational goals of the Museum. About the Society The Kirtlandia Society was organized in 1976 to support the research and educational goals of the Museum. The group was named in honor of doctor and naturalist Jared Potter Kirtland (1793-1877), who founded the Cleveland Academy of Natural Sciences, a predecessor of the Museum.
