God does not intend for the book of Job to comprehensively explain his dealings with the Satan. Satan is only a pawn in God’s sovereign purposes. HADDON ROBINSON PREACHING RETREAT 2019 Chris — May 14, 2019 _I am again privileged to be part of the Haddon Robinson Study Retreat (Map of Participants — Don’t miss Ireland!). This year we are studying the book of Isaiah and our guest lecturer is Tim Mackie of The Bible Project . Watch the Bible Project on Isaiah 1-39and Isaiah 40-66
!_
Each year a group of pastors gather for a week of intense study Covenant Harbor Camp near Lake Geneva, WI . Our format is simple. We invite a world-class scholar to teach us on one or more books of the Bible. As we are taught on a technical level, we collaborate to envision how to preach the Scripture we are studying to ourcongregations.
We were inspired by Dr. Haddon Robinsonto begin this
retreat. Haddon is one of the most influential teachers of homiletics (preaching) in the English speaking world in the last 100 years. Most of us who are part of this retreat studied under Haddon. All share a commitment to the clear proclamation of God’s Word. Participants are thankful for donors who underwrite part of the cost of our retreat. We are also thankful for our churches that value the opportunity for their pastors to get away from our many responsibilities for a time of intense focus on the Word. Our group comes from all over North America and Europe. If you click through to the interactive map,
you will see that we have participants who come from everywhere from Edmonton to Ireland. Combined, we have hundreds of years of pastoralexperience.

LENT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Chris — March 5, 2019WHAT IS LENT?
Lent is the 40 period (less Sundays) before Easter and is based on Jesus’s forty days in the wilderness. Some Christians fast, think soberly about their faith, and focus on repenting of their sins duringthis period.*
DOES THE RED BRICK CHURCHOBSERVE LENT?
No. We do not follow a formal liturgical calendar. IS IT WRONG TO OBSERVE LENT? No. There are advantages of intentionally focusing on Christ for a season. Fasting and praying should certainly be encouraged. See: Focus on Fasting.
WHAT “DANGERS” OR MISUNDERSTANDINGS MIGHT COME WITH LENTOBSERVANCE?
The dangers to avoid are essentially the same dangers to avoid when fasting (giving up some legitimate practice for a season to focus on God). When we fast, it is easy to allow a works mentality to creep into how we see our relationship with God. Said another way, we can consciously or unconsciously begin to believe that we are asking God to bless us because we are giving something up. The Christians confidence should never be on our effort but rather on the Gospel or Good Newsof
what God has done for those who put their faith and trust in him. IF, DURING LENT, I WANT TO GROW ON BEING MORE CENTERED ON JESUS, HOW SHOULD I GO ABOUT IT?Three suggestions:
* Prayerfully read the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). Meditate on Jesus in his Word. * Read The Final Days of Jesus: The Most Important Week of the Most Important Person Who Ever Livedto
gain a clearer picture of Holy Week. For more on this recommendation, see my post, 7 Reasons to Read the Final Days of Jesus.
* Read my small, unedited booklet, _Surveying the Cross: Pursuing An Increasingly Cross-Centered Life During Lent_,
that highlights a strategy for being more Cross-centered during Lent. Please note that the links are for my own use and don’t work in the pdf version. Essentially, this document is a copy of my study notes. *_Reposted from 2/28/2017._SHARE THIS:

TALKING POINTS FOR THOSE WOUNDED AT CHURCH Chris — March 3, 2019 _WHAT TALKING POINTS DO YOU SUGGEST? Wednesday (2:00 PM CST, 3/6/19) I will be a guest on the Chris Fabry show. I will speak
as one of the wounded to those finding their way forward after churchdisappointments._
A recent series of tweetsfrom
ThinkingGirl expressed where many are at following train wrecks atchurch. An excerpt:
TRUTH 1: It’s hard not to lose hope. I find myself having a difficult time going to scripture as all my experience with Harvest, the school, everything leading up to attending, what I was about, and who I was in Christ, was all steeped in scripture–in prayer. . . TRUTH 5: “Walk, walk, in the Word . . .” That’s all I wanted. So, I joined and began the membership classes; was asked to lead small group(s); and per my routine, threw myself into relationship with women. It all seemingly fell into place. Until it didn’t. . . TRUTH 7: It guts you. So, pray for others like me. We who are sure of our salvation. We who have in no way rejected our faith or Jesus. We who are “rooted, established, and built up…” We who just can’t seem to get tethered . . . Whether from experiences at Willow,
Harvest
,
or in the SBC
,
too many feel flattened.I recently shared
that
my family can relate. We know what it is like to be on the mental gerbil wheel — to wonder why God has allowed such wounds to take place — to be physically ill from stress— to see children uprootedand hurt.
Where my family’s suffering is concerned, I think of Paul’s words to the 2 Corinthians: _3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)._
Given that God comforts us in our afflictions so that we can comfort others, my goal on the Chris Fabry show will be to encourage and comfort people who are feeling disillusioned and discouraged aboutchurch.
Between now and then, I’m praying about talking points. It’s a live show, and I’m not leading the discussion, but here are areas I_may_ bring up:
* WHAT SCRIPTURE SHOULD WE MEDITATE ON WHEN WE FEEL LIKE GIVING UP ON CHURCH? Are there any passages of Scripture with direct application to those reeling from spiritual abuse? (This is the point I most wantto discuss!)
* WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? What should we look for in a local church? What do biblical pastors do? What is shepherding? * HOW DO WE NEED TO BE CAREFUL IN ENCOURAGING THOSE WHO ARE WOUNDED TO IMMEDIATELY AND AUTOMATICALLY FORGIVE? * WHAT DO WE DO WHEN CHRISTIANS REACH AN IMPASSE? I wrote a chapter on this _Unpacking Forgiveness_.
I stand by what I said, but I will add some material if there is a second edition. Can local churches be too autonomous? What have we learned about governance / church polity? * WHAT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF CHRISTIAN LEADERS REGARDING SPEAKING OUT ABOUT THE DISQUALIFICATION OF ANOTHER LEADER? Covering the above list would be too much for any one show. We won’t get to everything. Still, what am I missing? What talking points wouldyou add?

In Church , Forgiveness AFTER RECEIVING CHURCH WOUNDS, BE MOTIVATED TO UNPACK FORGIVENESS Chris — February 22,2019
_ I
wrote Unpacking Forgivenessafter
my family was deeply wounded at Harvest Bible Chapel. The thesis of that book is that biblical forgiveness can only truly be unpacked in a gospel-centered way — and biblical forgiveness certainly does not mean cheap forgiveness. If you take my FORGIVENESS QUIZyou will gain an
introduction to the direction of my book. Be assured that Christ is sufficient for whatever wounds you have received. _ In 2002, I was a church planting pastor for Harvest Bible Chapel. If memory serves correctly, ours was the fifth church plant. Our time with Harvest ended suddenly in late 2004 and our departure from Harvest was deeply, deeply painful for our family. Our Christmas card in 2004 featured a picture of our four children next to a roadside. It was where we were post-Harvest in the fall of 2004. We had invested everything we had in a church plant — only to see our lives turned upside down. We had little idea what was next. Which is to say, to those who have suffered deep wounds at Harvest —we can relate!
Since Harvest, I have served The Red Brick Church for the last 14 years and it has been a wonderful time of building into lives in a small church context. We love the lambs here. I have not spoken or written publicly about Harvest. We did our best to move forward in a way that is honoring to Christ. That included meeting with James MacDonald and with another former leader to be sure we did our best to honor Christ. I’ve crossed paths with James a couple of times since then and our interaction has been cordial. But obviously — since I left Harvest in the late summer of 2004 — Harvest was very much on my heart and mind when I wrote _Unpacking Forgiveness_ in 2006-2007 time frame. My prayer for all those who are hurting through this situation is that forgiveness would be unpacked in a Christ-centered way. Those who fear that biblical forgiveness minimizes sin, don’t understand biblicalforgiveness.
If
you have been deeply offended, accept Jesus invitation to find rest in Him. His yoke is easy and his burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30).
For those who don’t want to order another book, this page offorgiveness links
offers
links to many different posts I have written over the years. As for our family, there have been many happier pictures since we found ourselves at a crossroads in the Fall of 2004. The picture to the right is of a favorite of our son (Christopher) and his pretty bride’s (Meredith) wedding in 2017.SHARE THIS:

A STORY OF ROMANCE IN STILLMAN VALLEY Chris — January 17, 2019_
Ethel
Devore passed away this morning. The below story is an edited version of a February 2008 church newsletter article. The hardware store is now a community center. I sure enjoyed hearing Ethel telling me herstory. _
You probably don’t think of the Hardware store here in town as a real romantic spot. Yet, there are stories of love everywhere in asmall town.
When Ethel told me her story of love, I didn’t realize that the Stillman Valley Hardware store used to be a factory. But Ethel told me she met her husband when they were both at the factory that later became the hardware store. In fact, when Ethel’s husband asked her for their first date, it was at work. Word had gotten out that a move was being made so everyone stopped their machines and watched while he asked her out. I didn’t think to ask what they made at the hardware store when itwas a factory.
So, Ethel and her husband’s first date was at a dance at Kings (for those who are new, it’s an even smaller town down on 64 where the John Deere dealership is located). And, when they walked into the dance, Ethel’s brother yelled so everyone could hear, “Hey, who’s that with Ethel?” I estimate that her brother yelled that over 70 years ago, but Ethel never forgot her first date at Kings. The Devores were married inside a year in her parent’s home – – And, they had to borrow Ethel’s parent’s car for the honeymoon. The groom’s car wasn’t running. If you’re single, maybe start hanging out in downtown Stillman. And, if they’re still having dances out in Kings try that out aswell.
And, seriously, remember that stories are one of our greatest treasures. All of history is one great story: a meta-narrative theologians call it. Humanity has rebelled, but God is redeeming for Himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good(Titus 2:14
). Within
that one grand story, all our individual lives intersect and overlap and cross over with one another and form one great fabric. Ethel Devore was a beautiful part of the community of our church. You are a strand in that fabric, if indeed you belong to Christ (1Corinthians 15:1-3
). And,
your story is a treasure, even if you have never been asked for a date in a factory that later became a hardware store.SHARE THIS:

INVITE CHRISTMAS STORYTELLING Chris — November 27,2018
_ The
aroma of stories should fill Christmas gatherings like potpourri._ This morning, I ate bacon and eggs at the senior breakfast. I hasten to say that I qualify as a “senior” because of my role as pastor. Though, I will soon have dual citizenship based on both age and clergystatus.
Actually, I’m not sure of the age requirement and don’t have the heart to ask. I may already be in. I enjoyed every minute of the breakfast: bacon and eggs – though no hash browns or toast — beautiful friends, and good stories. I reallylike the stories.
Senior gatherings invite storytelling and memories like the account I heard today of Dr. Beebe’s emphatic gestures when he led our church choir in the 1950’s. Other stories were more recent. I complained about the weather which I view as my right having driven back from the great state of Iowa in nasty conditions. My family counted 105 vehicles in the ditch between Iowa City and our home. Finishing my 14th year in Stillman Valley, Jamie’s mom having recently died, it’s on my heart that whenever we say goodbye to someone who goes on to be with Christ, we lose a storyteller. Time is short. Let’s encourage people to swap stories. Ask people where they grew up. Ask about their folks. There is nothing like combining the smell of Christmas dinner and the pleasant aroma of memories. And remember, all our stories are part of the great story of Christ, who was born in the city of David and laid in a manger because there was no room in the inn.SHARE THIS:

In Christmas , Church SENATOR BEN SASSE’S CASE FOR FCA’S FOCUS ON THE COACH Chris — October 22, 2018 The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) understands that, beyond parents, coaches influence young people more than any other group. As a result, the focus of FCA’s ministry is to engage, equip, and empower coaches forChrist.
In his new book, Them: Why We Hate Each Other–and How to Heal,
pages 63-64, Senator Ben Sasse (Nebraska) makes the case for FCA’s focus on the coach by describing the influence of his coaching father. What a legacy!
My dad was a football and wrestling coach, and because he also refereed six different sports, Friday evening was typically a work night for him — with me tagging along as a gym rat. Most of his friends were teachers, coaches, and refs, as well, but to everyone he was “Coach Sasse.” Dad’s work defined him in positive and fulfilling ways. Everywhere we went, people recognized him and greeted him with shouts of “Coach Sasse!” I heard him called that so many times that as a 5- or 6- year old, I suspected his first name might be “Coach” instead of “Gary.” It was who he was. He’d earned this honorofic through years of work on the field and in the gym. I can still see him running drills, painting fields and diamonds, driving vans through snowstorms, riding buses home late from away games, scheduling matches, printing out statistics, breaking down film, drawing up plays, photocopying depth charts, going to camps, organizing postgame meals and postseason banquets, washing loads of towels that stank so badly they could’ve walked to the washing machine on their own, exulting with kids in a victory, visiting the hospital after an injury, and — most of all — putting his arm around a player’s shoulder and urging him to persevere after a painful loss. He earned his title by investing in our community and in the lives of young men —- by yelling at boys when they needed it and by offering an encouraging word when it was of use. He helped lay a foundation of character and fortitude in his players. Three decades later, when I accepted a post as a college-president back home, men would regularly approach me to ask if I was related to Coach Sassse. When I said, he’s my dad, time after time they open up to me — a stranger — about the ways my dad had changed their lives. On a dozen occasions, men have become emotional telling me how my dad stood in, at some time in some way, for their missing dads.Ben Sasse (R-NE)
I grasped little of this when I was in elementary school, but there was still a hint of recognition in my decision, in third-grade flag football, to ask to have “Lil’ Sasse” instead of “Ben” on the back of the hoodie we all got for cold games. Dad didn’t coach any elementary grade teams, but I still wanted to be tied to his identity as a coach. I wanted to be connected to his work. After he had retired, I would take him to Lincoln’s Memorial Stadium for Nebraska football games (the Huskers being the winningest team of the last half-century, as you probably know). Nebraska hasn’t had an unsold seat to a home game since October 1962 — by far the longest sellout streak in college sports — so it’s important to get there early to navigate 90,000 fans. But as meaningful as it is to buy a Runza (a uniquely Nebraska Russian-German food), to join in the “Husker Power” chants, to cheer the Tunnel Walk to the deafening sounds of the Alan Parsons Project’s “Sirius” blasting from the loudspeakers, to review a video montage of the Big Red’s five national championships since 1970, or to salute the military flyover, there’s a different sound that I’ll probably remember best in my old age. And that is when some guy inevitably shouts, as Dad and I are working our way up the stands: “Hey, Coach Sasse! Over here!” No matter their age, you can hear the respect and affection in their voices. Some of them haven’t seen him since junior high, but they carry their own football and wrestling stories in their hearts. Some of it can surely be chalked up to their personal nostalgia about their youth rather than his exceptional instruction, but he still held a role in their narrative: He was “Coach.”SHARE THIS:

ACCESSIBLE BOOKS EVERY “BRICK” FAMILY SHOULD CONSIDER OWNING Chris — July 14, 2018 _We recommend these books to our church family_. Christians are called to love God with their minds (Matt 22:37-40). Loving
God with our minds means striving to hide the meaning and understanding of God’s Word in the depths of our being so that we see life through a Christian lens and walk accordingly. The goal of this list is to recommend to The Red Brick Church family resources that could serve as a beginning point for a basic Christian library. Making such recommendations is a central way our pastors equip our flock(Ephesians 4:11-13
).
These resources are accessible. You don’t need to be a seminary student or pastor to understand them. Indeed, several of the resources are written for children or young people. The list is alphabetical by author with the particular category inbold.
If you read the explanation given with the recommended titles, you will see why we chose books from these categories:* The Bible
* Biblical Theology
* Devotions
* Family Devotions with Children * Hermeneutics / Bible Study Methods* Psalms
* Systematic Theology* Wisdom
Our recommendations are as follows: _The ESV Study Bible_. Wheaton, Ill:
Crossway, 2008. The Bible is _THE _book and the ESV Study Bible provides solid introduction articles to every book in the Bible as well as useful commentary or explanation throughout. The online ESV Study Bible is an excellent tool. TimChallies’s review
compares the ESV study Bible with other study Bibles. Bennett, Arthur. _The Valley of Vision_: _A Collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions_. Carlisle, PA: The Banner of Truth Trust, 1997. DEVOTIONS. Who among us would not acknowledge the need to improve in their prayer life? This collection of prayers will inspire and equip you to pray in a variety of settings and circumstances. Bruno, Chris. _The Whole Message of the Bible in 16 Words_.
Wheaton: Crossway, 2017. BIBLICAL THEOLOGY is the branch of the theology that studies the overarching (true) storyline of the Bible and how the parts fit with the whole. This book offers an accessible resource for flying at 30,000 feet over the whole Bible. See Pastor Chris Brauns’s post, An Accessible Resource for Understanding the Storyline of the Bible. He
writes, “Chris Bruno has written a concise book on biblical theology that is easy for to read regardless of one’s background. Chris identifies 16 verses that trace the key points of the biblical narrative. If you give this book just a few hours, you will be able to distill the message of the Bible in a paragraph or two. In the process, you will see how the book of Genesis fits together with Isaiah, Ezekiel, and much more.” Dever, Mark. _What Is a Healthy Church?_ Wheaton: Crossway, 2007. SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY (Doctrine of the church, ecclesiology). If you are part of our church, we will give you a copy of this book — provided you agree to read it. Dever highlights priorities for the local church. This concise book is helpful for those looking for a local church. Fee, Gordon D., and Douglas K. Stuart. _How to Read the Bible for AllIts Worth._
Vol. 3rd. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2003. HERMENEUTICS / BIBLE STUDY METHODS. A major goal for our church family is that we are all equipped to study the Word of God ourselves. This is a solid book on hermeneutics (Bible study methods). Fee and Stuart explain how to study a Psalm as opposed to a parable or another part of the Bible. Keller, Kathy. _The New City Catechism: 52 Questions and Answers for Our Hearts and Minds_.
Wheaton: Crossway, 2017. DEVOTIONS / FAMILY DEVOTIONS / SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY. A catechism is a series of questions and answers that teaches a basic outline of theology. Working through the questions and answers will give you an overview of important doctrinal truths. The New City Catechism reflects influences from both the Heidelberg and Westminster catechisms — two of the most wonderful documents in church history. Our church currently (2018) shares a different question and answer from _The New City Catechism _each week on the front of our bulletin. _New City Catechism_ resources, including an app , are available online. Keller, Timothy J. _The New City Catechism Devotional: God’s Truth for Our Hearts and Minds._ Edited by Collin Hansen. Wheaton, Illinois: Crossway, 2017. DEVOTIONS / FAMILY DEVOTIONS WITH CHILDREN / SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY. This is is a devotional for _The New City Catechism _(see above). It offers excellent devotional thoughts on each of the 52 questions. The devotions are brief — usually a couple of pages — and written in anon-technical way.
Keller, Timothy, and Kathy Keller. _God’s Wisdom for Navigating Life: A Year of Daily Devotions in the Book of Proverbs_.
S.l.: Viking, 2017. DEVOTIONS / WISDOM. Wisdom is the “saw” we use to cut our way through life. Wisdom is skill for right living. The book of Proverbs is given for the purpose of teaching us wisdom. Every Christian should make it an ongoing goal to read one of the 31 chapters of Proverbs each day. If it is the 9th day of the month, read Proverbs 9. Keller and Keller’s book will help you process the profound wisdom of the book of Proverbs. See also Pastor Brauns’s post: Read Proverbs 43% of the Rest of Your Life.
For those who wish to study Proverbs in depth, Pastor Brauns highly recommends Dan Phillips’s, _God’s Wisdom in Proverbs_.
We also recommend Champ Thornton’s excellent, _Pass It On: A Proverbs Journal for the Next Generation._ This excellent book introduces the book of Proverbs and then guides readers through a series of questions that become a journal. For more, see _A Gift Idea for a Leader in Your Life__._
See also this post: Books on My Desk Tonight (Including Dan Phillips’s, God’s Wisdom on Proverbs) Keller, Timothy, and Kathy Keller. _The Songs of Jesus: A Year of Daily Devotions in the Psalms_. New York: Viking, 2015. DEVOTIONS / PSALMS. Image bearers are emotional beings and all of us need to lead our emotions. The Psalter is God’s grace for leading our emotions. Keller’s devotional will whet your appetite to soak in the Psalms. Pastor Brauns _highly _recommends Derek Kidner’s inexpensive two volume commentary set on the Psalms in the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary set (Vol 1and Vol 2
).
These are among the most treasured and useable books he has ever own. See also: In the Wrong Place Emotionally? Memorize a Psalm to be Moved.
Lloyd-Jones, Sally. _The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story WhispersHis Name_.
Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2007. FAMILY DEVOTIONS WITH CHILDREN / BIBLICAL THEOLOGY. Our pastors recommend that every family own this book. It is one that Pastor Brauns often uses when he has the opportunity to spend a few moments with children. In his review,
Tim Challies points to the strength of this book in showing the storyline of the Bible and the centrality of Christ: “The book received wide praise for its deliberate and winsome focus on the person and work of Jesus and his centrality to the entire storyline of the Bible. Many parents reported that they enjoyed reading it every bit as much as their children enjoyed hearing it. At a time when many adults were early in their pursuit of Christ and just exploring the Bible on their own, they learned along with their children that the Bible is cohesive, that it has a consistent message and structure all held together by the theme of Jesus. The Jesus Storybook Bible taught the parents even as it taught their children. Together they learned that every story whispers his name.” Machowski, Marty. _The Ology: Ancient Truths, Ever New_.
First edition. Greensboro, NC: New Growth Press, 2015. FAMILY DEVOTIONS WITH CHILDREN/ SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY considers the overall and systematic teaching of Scripture on particular points of doctrine. _The Ology _is an introductory book to systematic theology that we are using in some of our Bible studies. Pastor Tim Michalek says, “This book is ideal for families with late elementary and early teens.” We have also used this for a Bible study with new believers. See also Pastor Brauns’s post, “What is Systematic Theology?” Mathis, David. _Habits of Grace: Enjoying Jesus through the SpiritualDisciplines_
.
Wheaton, Illinois: Crossway, 2016. DEVOTIONS. David Mathis helps Christians understand how they can grow by God’s grace rather than wearing out in their own strength_. _For more, see Pastor Chris Brauns’s post, Plugging Into God’s Power.
David Mathis illustrates the idea cooperating or receiving God’s grace. He is careful to show that God supplies the power, but that we need to receive God’s grace. “I can flip a switch, but I don’t provide the electricity. I can turn on a faucet, but I don’t make the water flow. There be no light and no liquid refreshment without some else providing it. And so it is with the Christian with the ongoing grace of God. His grace is essential for our spiritual lives, but we don’t control the supply. We can’t make the favor of God flow, but he has given us circuits to connect and pipes to open expectantly. There are paths along which he has promised his favor.” Mathis’ book, then, is about how we open the “pipes” and wait expectantly for God’s grace to flow into our lives. Mandryk, Jason. _Operation World: The Definitive Prayer Guide to EveryNation_
.
07 edition. Downers Grove, IL: IVP Books, 2010. DEVOTIONS / FAMILY DEVOTIONS WITH CHILDREN. This resource gives an overview of every country in the world and offers suggestions for how Christians should pray for that country. This is an indispensable resource for equipping churches and families to be missions minded. Families will profit from reading the overview of country together followed by praying for a missionary in that part of the world. Packer, J.I. _Concise Theology: A Guide to Historic ChristianBeliefs._
Wheaton: Tyndale House, 1993. SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY. Packer offers chewable segments of systematic theology that are ideal for busy leaders. Fifteen minutes at a time, you can read Piper’s summary of the doctrine of the Trinity or his explanation of providence. Packer, J. I. _Evangelism & the Sovereignty of God_.
IVP Academic, 1991. SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY. Sooner or later, discussions of salvation consider questions of election, the sovereignty of God, and individual choice. This is one of the first books to read on the subject. It is superb both as it relates to the relationship between God’s sovereignty and human responsibility, but also in equipping us to evaluate the legitimacy of different evangelistic efforts. This short book also contains an excellent summary of the gospel message. An outline of Packer’s summary of the gospel is on my website. Spurgeon, Charles H. _Morning and Evening: A New Edition of the Classic Devotional Based on The Holy Bible, English Standard Version_. Edited by Alistair Begg. Revised, Updated edition. Wheaton, Ill: Crossway, 2003. DEVOTIONS. The great 19th century pastor, Charles Spurgeon, wrote these devotions which are edited by Alistair Begg. This is a great go-to resource for devotions. Thornton, Champ. _The Radical Book for Kids: Exploring the Roots andShoots of Faith_
.
Greensboro, NC: New Growth Press, 2016. FAMILY DEVOTIONS WITH CHILDREN. See Pastor Chris Brauns’s post, An Excellent New Resourcefor Young Families
. He writes,
“Champ Thornton’s book shows families how to grow a root system in the Christian faith. It offers a broad base of rich content in meal-sized portions readily accessible to families. The content ranges from an introduction to Scripture, to biblical theology, to historical theology. The elephant jokes and knot tying lessons are a nice bonus. I am putting this on a short list of books I recommend that all our church families own.” Vos, Catherine F. _The Child’s Story Bible_.
5th edition. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, 1983. FAMILY DEVOTIONS WITH CHILDREN. Vos’s book is a classic. It was first published in 1935. The Brauns family has multiple copies. This book is far closer to the biblical text than Sally Lloyd-Jones but has fewer pictures. It is best suited to children eight and older.SHARE THIS:

QUOTES: HOW DOES SANCTIFICATION WORK? BY POWLISON Chris — June 21, 2018_
I
highly recommend David Powlison’s How Does Sanctification Work?,
especially to pastors and counselors._ _How does sanctification work?_ is one of the more profound books I have read in recent years. In a short amount of space, Powlison provides a nuanced view of how Christians are conformed to the imageof Christ.
Tim Challies summarizes what is excellent about this book. Those who are interested shouldread his review.
I won’t take time to consolidate my thoughts into a proper review. But here are selected quotes: “I am convinced that our understanding of the process of the Christian life is greatly enriched by considering multiple mundane examples, both in Scripture and in our lives.” (20) “If only there were some one thing to make Christian growth Certain! But there is no single key!” (23) “You need stories.” (29) “When practical and pastoral implications are deduced from a sweeping theological generalization and then buttressed by selected texts and a single-stranded personal testimony, important things areoverlooked.” (30)
Seven “more obvious meanings” of the Cross: (1) We see the mercy and justice of God. (2) The Cross accomplishes salvation via atonement. (3) Christ defeated the powers of darkness. (4) Jesus sympathetically enters into suffering. (5) There is encouragement in the friendship of Christ. (6) Via communion, the Cross creates a fellowship of common life together. (7) We gain vision from how Jesus died and what he said. (35-37) “Variants on these five factors intertwine within every story of our discipleship.” (63) “He is working out the ‘attitudinal forgiveness . . . that is the precondition for constructively approaching another person to work toward ‘transacted’ forgiveness.” (91) “The reorientation of a human being never comes via pat answers or quick fixes.” (94) “Change is a lifelong process in which we witness thematic continuities.” (100) “The Christian Life typically lurches forward rather than marching uniformly in a straight line.” (102) “Perhaps the most dramatic evidence of headway in sanctification is that you no longer think so much about yourself.” (112)SHARE THIS:

HADDON ROBINSON PREACHING RETREAT 2018 Chris — May 15, 2018_I
am again privileged to be part of the Haddon Robinson Study Retreat. This year we are studying the Gospel of Mark and our guest lecturer isMark Strauss
of Bethel seminary. _ Each year a group of pastors gather for a week of intense study Covenant Harbor Camp near Lake Geneva, WI .
All share a commitment to the clear proclamation of God’s Word.Participants
are thankful for donors who underwrite part of the cost of our retreat. We are also thankful for our churches that value the opportunity for their pastors to get away from our many responsibilities for a time of intense focus on the Word. Our group comes from all over North America. If you click through to the interactive map, you will see that we have participants who come from everywhere from Edmonton to South Carolina. Combined, we have hundreds of years of pastoral experience.See also:
