4 REASONS WHY CHICKEN ARE NOT GIVEN ADDED HORMONES Here are the 4 main reasons why chickens are NOT given added hormones: 1. Hormone use is illegal in poultry production. Since the 1950s, the U.S. government has banned all hormones and steroids in poultry. While it might be alleged that illegal use of hormones is occasionally practiced, as you’ll read below, you’ll come to understand why WHAT IS CHLORINATED CHICKEN? HOW IS CHICKEN TESTED TO ENSURE THERE ARE NO HARMFUL The U.S. National Residue Program for Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products, administered by FSIS, is an interagency program designed to identify, rank, and analyze for chemical contaminants in meat, poultry, and egg products.; FSIS randomly samples poultry meat at slaughter and tests for residues of more than 200 drugs, antibiotics, chemical contaminants, and pesticides. 5 CONFUSING CHICKEN LABELS (AND WHAT THEY ACTUALLY MEAN) 2. Cage-free. This is one of the most confusing and misleading food labels you’ll find on chicken products. No chicken meat you buy is raised in a cage. So every chicken meat product you purchase, with the exception of eggs, is cage-free by default. The majority of chickens raised for meat in the U.S. live in large, open structures called WHAT IS CHLORINATED CHICKEN? Compared to 25 years ago, today’s chickens now require seven percent less feed per pound to grow. Broiler chickens (chickens raised for meat) live in growout houses, which – as their namesake implies – provide enough space for chicks to literally “grow out” into full sized chickens.In fact, the houses are built in a way that each bird can eat, drink, rest and move around freely..
