By March of 1867, Congress incorporated the Lincoln Monument Association to build a memorial to the slain 16th President. In 1914, as part of a large rehabilitation of the Mall in Washington, D.C., they selected Daniel Chester French to create a statue of Abraham Lincoln for the Memorial that Henry Bacon had been commissioned todesign.

To complement his just-finished new Studio, French designed a formal garden in 1898. THE STUDIO — CHESTERWOOD The main work space of the Studio is a 30 x 29-foot room with 26-foot high walls which provided ample space for heroic equestrian models. Along with provisions for excellent natural lighting, French had other exceptional requirements since so much of his work was designed to beplaced outdoors.

Completed in 1901, the nine-bedroom stucco-clad Residence was designed by Henry Bacon, later renowned as the architect of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D. C.
