“YOU ARE NOT YOU ANYMORE”: ON THE TORTURE OF THEON GREYJOY By Asim Qureshi. Warning: This article contains content some readers might find upsetting. The article also contains potential plot spoilers. I finally managed to get around to reading A Dance with Dragons, the fifth book in the Game of Thrones series. For those not familiar with the books, the character of Theon Greyjoy is captured and tortured, badly, by Ramsay Snow (later Ramsay Bolton). AN A TO Z OF THEORY ROLAND BARTHES’S MYTHOLOGIES: A By Andrew Robinson. The most explicitly political aspect of Barthes’s work is his ‘mythology’, or analysis of myths. Many of the myths he studies ROLAND BARTHES’S MYTHOLOGIES: NATURALISATION, POLITICS AND By Andy McLaverty-Robinson. Mythology and Naturalisation. Barthes claims that dominant institutions lull us into the belief that the current system is natural. It portrays the way things are as naturaland eternal.

For us Palestinians from Gaza, the PR spin around this ‘roof knocking’ hides a much uglier reality, write Malaka Shwaikh and Shaymaa Ziara. WALTER BENJAMIN: MESSIANISM AND REVOLUTION Walter Benjamin's relevance for activists today is most strongly felt in his works on social transformation. In the sixth of eight pieces on Benjamin, Andrew Robinson explores the Theses on History, and discusses the revolutionary implications of allegory, collecting, citation, DIY, and time. AUGUSTO BOAL: THE RAINBOW OF DESIRE In the last of his seven-part series on the radical dramatist Augusto Boal, Andrew Robinson looks at the Rainbow of Desire, a set of techniques designed to deal with internalised oppression. Robinson surveys Boal's continuing influence, and the thorny question of whether theatrical challenges to oppression are always emancipatory. THOMAS AQUINAS: ETHICS AND ANTI-CAPITALISM In the second of his three-part series on the medieval philosopher, Andrew Robinson examines Thomas Aquinas's ethical theory, and the virtues and principles it promotes. He also explores Aquinas's critique of usury, and its usefulness to an anti-capitalist critique of capital accumulation. Global lockdown is finally giving way to a period of economic crash and social unrest. Yet the state response to the outpouring of justified anger at police atrocities is remarkably similar to its response to the coronavirus pandemic. BRITAIN’S MEDIA REARS ITS ISLAMOPHOBIC HEAD AGAIN Last week's Mail Online article about Muslim "no-go-areas" is the latest episode in the UK media's chronic demonisation and misrepresentation of British Muslim communities, a trend which shows no signs of abating, writes Hamza Ali Shah. ANTI-LOCKDOWN THEORY: IN DEFENCE OF GIORGIO AGAMBEN Andy McLaverty-Robinson is a political theorist and activist based in the UK. IN THEORY GIORGIO AGAMBEN: DESTROYING SOVEREIGNTY In his last column, Andrew Robinson introduced the work of Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben. This week, he continues his assessment of Agamben by examining the basis for revolutionary political action and resistance to sovereignty that emerges from Agamben's work. “YOU ARE NOT YOU ANYMORE”: ON THE TORTURE OF THEON GREYJOY By Asim Qureshi. THE UK GOVERNMENT SHOULD STOP PUTTING ARMS SALES AHEAD OF Time and again, successive UK governments have put arms sales ahead of the rights and lives of Palestinians. That long and shameful policy must stop, writes Dana Aboul-Jabine. GROWING INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION OF WESTERN SAHARA OFFERS The death in May of Saharawi president Mohamed Abdelaziz has brought back into focus the question of Western Sahara's future. In light of the failures of the UN peace process, the internationalisation of solidarity with the Saharawi people is the only way to bring about lasting peace and freedom to Africa's last colony, writes KhalilAsmar.
THOMAS AQUINAS: THE STATE AND THE COMMON GOOD In the last essay of his three-part series on the medieval philosopher, Andrew Robinson examines the political thought of Thomas Aquinas, notably his ideas on the state, the limits of state power, and the uses and abuses of the idea of the common good. Paul Bernal
Matt Hancock and Boris Johnson are trying to persuade us that it’s our civic duty to take part in their Covid-19 ‘test and track’ programme.
