STATS: THE MAGAZINE FOR STUDENTS OF STATISTICS STATS magazine contains many articles that may be of interest to students of statistics and educators. Articles vary from those that are meant to teach and inform about different concepts and ideas to those that provide ideas for how to teach important topics to others. Some issues also include interesting data sets and information about ways to become more involved in the FOOD: THE PROBABILITY OF A KISS Summary: Through generating, collecting, displaying, and analyzing data, students are given the opportunity to explore a variety of descriptive statistical techniques and develop an understanding of the distinction between theoretical, subjective, and empirical (or experimental) probabilities. These concepts are developed with activities using Hershey KissesTM and may be extended to introduce DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF AN INSTRUMENT TO MEASURE The Statistical Anxiety Rating Scale (STARS) was developed to measure statistical anxiety. Statistical anxiety is defined as the feelings of anxiety encountered when taking a statistics course or doing statistical analyses. Eighty-nine items were generated and presented to a sample of 1150 statistics students. STARS can be used by statistics teachers to help diagnose areas of high anxiety. INTELLIGENT ANIMALS: HOW TO ASSESS APPLET KNOWLEDGE IN Write out the null and alternative hypothesis for this study (in words and/or symbols). Undergraduate Statistics Project Competition The purpose of USPROC is to encourage the development of data analysis skills, to enhance presentation skills, and to recognize outstanding work by undergraduate statistics students. Teaching of Statistics in the Health Sciences Our mission is to promote excellence in the teaching of statistics in the health sciences through the dissemination of peer-reviewed/approved teaching materials that are centrally archived in a public domain, easy to navigate, website. Simulation-based Statistical Inference Our goal is to provide a discussion forum for those interested in using simulation- and randomization-based inference as a large component of their introductory statistics courses. We will have postings from developers of several curricula, with their insights as to why and how to use these methods.
