Concerned that people aren’t reading enough anymore, Casey pitched the idea that he would recommend books he likes to his viewers, who would hopefully read them and they could discuss the books together. We love the idea of a book club to encourage people to read more and as a way to discover new and interestingbooks.
> “If Oprah had a book club then I want to have a book club!” > – Casey Neistat Casey summed up his philosophy on books by comparing reading to leaving the house – you can go your whole life without doing it but you’re missing out on a lot of experiences if you never leave your house. According to Casey, the hardest part about having a book club is finding a book that most of his audience will be interested in. So far, two book selections have been announced for the Casey Neistat Book Club. He’s made it clear that they are not paid endorsements. Don’t forget to check out what books Casey Neistat is currentlyreading.
CASEY NEISTAT BOOK CLUB PICKS * AMERICAN KINGPIN by Nick Bilton * READY PLAYER ONE by Ernest Cline* ???
------------------------- #1 – AMERICAN KINGPIN BY NICK BILTONBuy on Amazon
The first book selection for Casey Neistat’s Book Club is the New York Times bestseller American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road by Nick Bilton. It was published in May 2017. _American Kingpin_ tells the true story of Ross Ulbricht, the mysterious man behind the Silk Road– a website
on the dark web mainly used as a marketplace for buying and selling drugs with Bitcoin. Using the pseudonym Dread Pirate Roberts, the 26-year-old Ulbricht quickly grew the Silk Road to more than $1 billion in revenue which obviously attracted the attention of the FBI. Casey found it hard to put down and finished reading the 352-page bookin 4 days.
As proof of Casey’s social media influence, the Amazon best seller ranking for _American Kingpin_ jumped from #1576 to #25 within 24 hours of being announced on the vlog. Nick Bilton is a British-American journalist and author who writes for Vanity Fair and was formerly a columnist for the New York Times. Bilton also wrote the book Hatching Twitter which inspired Casey to start his own tech company. ------------------------- #2 – READY PLAYER ONE BY ERNEST CLINEBuy on Amazon
In the nerdiest vlog he’s ever made, Casey
announced the second book for the Book Club. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is a science-fiction novel and a New York Times bestseller. It was published in August 2011. In a dystopian world in the year 2044, people spend the majority of their time in a massively multiplayer online simulation game called OASIS. The deceased creator of OASIS has hidden an Easter Egg in this virtual universe and the first person to find it will inherit his fortune and take ownership of OASIS. The book is filled with references to 1980s movies, TV shows, music and video games. They are the key to solving the puzzles and finding the Easter Egg. Casey first read _Ready Player One_ five years ago and considers it the best sci-fi book he’s read very long time. A big part of the book’s appeal to Casey and to many others is the nostalgia of the 1980s pop culture references. The book is about to become a blockbuster moviedirected by Steven
Spielberg. Casey recommends that everybody read it before the film’s March 29, 2018 release date. He feels it will “expire” once themovie comes out.

------------------------- WHAT BOOK IS CASEY NEISTAT CURRENTLY READING? Casey has tweeted about a couple of books in February including one he recently finished and another he is about to start reading. CASEY'S READING LIST * HOW TO TURN DOWN A BILLION DOLLARS: THE SNAPCHAT STORY by BillyGallagher
* CONSPIRACY by Ryan Holiday * 1984 by George Orwell HOW TO TURN DOWN A BILLION DOLLARS: THE SNAPCHAT STORY BY BILLYGALLAGHER

At the end of February, Casey Neistat tweetedthat he
had just finished reading How to Turn Down a Billion Dollars: The Snapchat Story by Billy Gallagher. It was published on February 13, 2018 (304 pages). _How To Turn Down a Billion Dollars_ details the rise of Snapchat, from it’s inception to becoming a multi-billion dollar company with 187 million daily active users. The biography of Evan Spiegel, co-founder and CEO, is a big focus of the book. It also recounts the fallout with co-founder Reggie Brown and subsequent lawsuit as well as the story of Snapchat turning down Facebook’s $3 billion acquisitionoffer in 2013.
Billy Gallagher provides a unique insight as he attended Stanford University and was a fraternity brother with Snapchat’s three co-founders. Casey highly recommends _How To Turn Down a Billion Dollars_ and says it was a super insightful read. ------------------------- CONSPIRACY BY RYAN HOLIDAYBuy on Amazon
It looks like next book on Casey Neistat’s reading list is Conspiracy: Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker, and the Anatomy of Intrigue by Ryan Holiday. Casey recentlytweeted a
photo of a copy of the book, noting that he was excited to read it. _Conspiracy_ is a brand new book and was released on February 27, 2018(336 pages).
_Conspiracy_ is about the demise of Gawker, the former gossip blog that published a sex tape involving Hulk Hogan and his best friend’s wife. Billionaire investor Peter Thiel used the sex tape as an opportunity to seek revenge against Gawker for outing him as gay and funded Hogan’s massive lawsuit against the website. Ryan Holiday is the author of several books including The Obstacle Is the Way and Ego Is the Enemy . Casey thinks Holiday is an amazing writerand is a
fan of his work.
------------------------- 1984 BY GEORGE ORWELLBuy on Amazon
In mid-March, Casey started re-reading 1984 by George Orwell. He hadn’t read it since high school. It was originally published in 1949 (156 pages). The novel takes place in a totalitarian dystopia where the government controls its citizens through constant surveillance and psychological manipulation. Posters of the leader are everywhere, reminding the public that “Big Brother is watching you.” In light of the Facebook Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal, Casey thought now was the perfect time to read _1984_ again. The erosion of privacy and the amount of personal information we willingly give to tech companies is worrisome to Casey. He’s even noticed that he censors himself in private, paranoid about who’s listening. SOURCE: Twitch – discussing my Boosted Board wreck@ 36:28min
