THE TICK PROJECT
The Tick Project is a study testing whether neighborhood-based prevention can reduce human exposure to Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. The methods we are testing are simple and safe for people, pets, and the environment. PHARMACEUTICAL POLLUTION Pharmaceutical pollution is especially concerning. Aquatic life is swimming in a cocktail of antidepressants, amphetamines, birth control, and antihistamines. And research shows that these compounds alter organisms and put ecosystems, drinking water, and human health at risk. Pharmaceutical pollution in freshwater is largely unstudied. ANIMAL AND PLANT HEALTH INSPECTION SERVICE REPORT ON THE 2 FY 2020, we cleared 179,522 imported shipments containing over 1.8 billion plant units (cuttings, rooted plants, tissue culture, etc.) and nearly 723,000 kilograms of woody plant seeds, intercepting 6,786 quarantine-significant pests.CBP inspected 4 million international travelers’ baggage, 338,768 passenger vehicles, 25,315 ships, and more than 1.4 million cargo, mail, and ROAD SALT: THE PROBLEM, THE SOLUTION, AND HOW TO GET THERE Road Salt: The Problem, The Solution, and How to Get There is an update to a 2010 report. ZEBRA MUSSEL FACT SHEET Zebra Mussel Fact Sheet . The zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) is a small bivalve originally native to the Caspian Sea region. Zebra mussels reached North America in SCIENCE FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR PLANET A non-profit environmental research organization in Millbrook, N.Y. Our staff are global experts in disease ecology, the ecology of freshwater and forests, and urban ecology. We seek to enhance the ecological literacy of students, decision makers, and the public, and to train the next generation of ecologists. CAMPUS TRAILS & ROADWAYS Hiking Trails. April 1 - October 31. Trails are open from sunrise to sunset. Internal roadway gates are open from 8:30 am - 7:00 pm. The Cary Institute's hiking trails immerse visitors in a range of ecosystems, from old fields and upland forests to wetlands. These varied habitats are great for nature observation. ECO-CAMPS & PROGRAMS Eco-Camps & Programs. Our in-person summer camps will not be running in 2021. This decision was made with the health and safety of our campers, staff, and community in mind. We will miss our campers and look forward to when we can explore ecology together again. Please check out this summer's at-home offerings below: At-Home EcoQuest &At-Home
THE TICK PROJECT
The Tick Project is a study testing whether neighborhood-based prevention can reduce human exposure to Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. The methods we are testing are simple and safe for people, pets, and the environment. PREVENTING PANDEMICS: WHY BIODIVERSITY MATTERS Preventing Pandemics: Why Biodiversity Matters. This opens in a new window. Join disease ecologists Rick Ostfeld and Felicia Keesing for a virtual Cary Science Conversation with Cary President Josh Ginsberg. They explore the role of biodiversity in infectious disease spillovers. The microbes that cause diseases like COVID-19, SARS, andEbola

The Download has been updated to allow installation of GLA on both 32-bit and 64-bit computers. Many thanks to David Wojtowicz of the University of Illinois for making thechanges
DR RICHARD S OSTFELD Richard Ostfeld studies the ecology of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases such as Powassan viral encephalitis, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis. Ostfeld and his Bard College collaborator Felicia Keesing direct The Tick Project – a five-year study that is testing two tick control methods in residential neighborhoods throughout Dutchess County, NY. The Trails. From the Gifford House trailhead a tall dead tree can be seen.; That little lump on top was a cedar waxwing.; Down below, common milkweed was growing tall. On board was a mating pair of perhaps March flies.; Closer to the stem was a swamp milkweed leaf beetle.; Across the Old Hayfield, yellowwood was blooming. By the flower, one can see that it is a legume. THE BEAR NECESSITIES WITH NAT GEO EXPLORER DR. RAE WYNN-GRANT The event is sponsored in part by Harney & Sons Fine Teas. Register. USDA FARM BILL REPORT HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR CONGRESSIONAL USDA produced a report on their efforts to prevent forest pests from entering the country in international trade. The report, which was released in March 2021 by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), is unfortunately brief and superficial. However, it does amplify some key aspects of the problem, and it highlights the need for Congressional action to protect the nation’s ANIMAL AND PLANT HEALTH INSPECTION SERVICE REPORT ON THE 2 FY 2020, we cleared 179,522 imported shipments containing over 1.8 billion plant units (cuttings, rooted plants, tissue culture, etc.) and nearly 723,000 kilograms of woody plant seeds, intercepting 6,786 quarantine-significant pests.CBP inspected 4 million international travelers’ baggage, 338,768 passenger vehicles, 25,315 ships, and more than 1.4 million cargo, mail, and THE DOWNSIDE OF NITROGEN FERTILIZER The downside of nitrogen fertilizer. Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume. Yesterday, we introduced the topic of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. Anyone with a lawn or a garden is familiar with the product. But prior to the 1950s, it use was not the norm. Today, we’ve nearly doubled the natural rate of nitrogenavailable in soils.
AN ECOLOGY OF SEGREGATION Steward Pickett is an expert in the ecology of plants, landscapes, and urban ecosystems. The founding director of the Baltimore Ecosystem Study (1997-2016), his research focuses on the ecological structure of urban areas and vegetation dynamics, with national and globalapplications.
