N.C.’S 2021 DELAYED HARVEST TROUT WATERS OPEN NEXT Next Saturday, June 5 is the opening day of North Carolina’s 2021 Delayed Harvest season for 36 bodies of water. The first half of opening day is open to youth anglers 17-years-old and younger. At noon, all other licensed anglers can join in. The youth anglers get the 6 a.m. to 11:59 a.m. time slot all to themselves only on June 5. SOCO CREEK TROUT FISHING WITH PAUTZKE BAITS Soco Creek in Cherokee is loaded with stocked trout. Addison Rupert of Low Country Outdoor Adventures is getting his clients into a smorgasbord of fish. Multiple species of sharks, plenty of speckled trout — including some gators, redfish of all sizes, spadefish, jack crevalle, and some big black drum have all HOMEMADE CAJUN ANCHOR A homemade mud anchor is a quick and inexpensive alternative to more-expensive shallow-water anchoring systems. A mud anchor or “Cajun anchor” is a popular device used by anglers when fishing shallow waters. Designed to hold a boat in place quickly, it was the predecessor of today’s modern Power Poles and Anchor pins that deploy mechanically. LAKE OF THE MONTH: LAKE GASTON BASS FISHERY MAY BE SECOND Lake Gaston may be the premier largemouth bass lake shared by North Carolina and Virginia. That’s a bold statement about a body of water just downstream of massive John H. Kerr Reservoir and about half its size. But Gaston’s 20,300 acres have more aquatic grasses than Kerr — aka Buggs Island Lake — to concentrate baitfish and bass; it contains plenty of threadfin and gizzard shad; LURE SPOTLIGHT: HOOPEE HOOKERS The number one secret to what makes the Hoopee Hooker superior, said Lane, is the quality of the swivel they use. MONSTER BLUEFIN TUNA CAUGHT OUT OF OREGON INLET While fishing 45 miles offshore of Oregon Inlet, N.C., Josiah VanFleet of Toano, Va. and his crew caught a 114.5-inch giant bluefin tuna. The fish has been estimated to weigh between 800 and 1000 pounds. VanFleet was joined by his 9-year-old son Ezekiel VanFleet, Steve Hux, Steven Griggs and Frank Amato. GUILFORD COUNTY HUNTER DRILLS 31-POINT NONTYPICAL BUCK Tory Pegg of Kernersville, N.C. isn’t likely to have another opening day of bow season like the one he experienced on Sept. 7. Just before dark in one of Guilford County’s pristine oak forests, Pegg released an arrow dead inside the engine room of a 199 4/8-inch, 31-point buck at only 10 yards away from his stand situated high in the treetops. UPSTATE ANGLER CATCHES 103-POUND CATFISH AT SANTEE Brad McCall of Anderson, S.C. caught a 103-pound Arkansas blue catfish at Santee this past Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021. The big catch came at just the right time. He and Mike Durham were competing in the Santee Lakes Catfish Club tournament out of Blacks Camp. McCall caught the 103-pound catfish while trolling with cut bait on a channel ledge. LAKE WATEREE CRAPPIE FISHING REPORT Lake Wateree creeks are full of crappie. The spring weather has Lake Wateree crappie moving shallow for their spring spawn. And anglers are catching plenty of them with the most basic of equipment and techniques. Guide TC Lloyd of Southern Angling Guide Service said this is the time of year when anyone can catch crappie consistently. GIVE YAUPON REEF A TRY THIS MONTH The two species that get most fishermen’s attention are flounder and king mackerel, and August is a month to target both. The buoy at Yaupon Reef is approximately in the middle of the structure, which is placed in roughly a 1-mile circle around the buoy.
