AN AMAZING CLOSEUP OF A NEPENTHES PERVILLEI SEED REVEALS IRIDESCENTUNDER COAT.
This is an intriguing post that will hopefully interest all of you Nepenthes aficionados, growers and botanists alike. I've been sent this wonderful macro of a Nepenthes pervillei seed by my friend John Christmann a couple of days ago (thanks a lot John!). First of all, let's introduce the seed itself. Some (most?) of you will be stunned to find out how Nepenthes pervillei seed looks like as you are certainly used to the usual brownish, light, long and slender seed of most Malesian species that are clearly designed for wind dispersal. N. pervillei seed has a different distinctive structure; it is characteristically short (2-4 mm), has an ovoid or truncate shape and is of a deep back color. Lacking wings, it certainly can't be well carried by wind. Is is obviously a clear adaptation: N.Aug

AILURONYX TRACHYGASTER, THE GIANT BRONZE GECKO. This is another gecko I found while I was wandering in the lush habitat of the Vallée de Mai nature reserve. Also a Seychelles endemic, like Phelsuma sundbergi that I very recently introduced in this blog, Ailuronyx trachygaster can be observed as well feeding on the male inflorescence of Coco de mer palms, Lodoicea maldivica. Although I did manage to spot quite a few specimens of the giantbronze gecko, as A.

PHELSUMA SUNDBERGI FEEDING ON COCO DE MER MALE FLOWERS. I will of course soon highlight the iconic coco de mer on this blog as this famous palm tree is Seychelles symbol and obviously a fascinating plant. But before that I would like to showcase some animals that I observed on this tree while I was visited the Vallée de Mai, Praslin island well known nature reserve, and also a Unesco World NatureHeritage.

DISCOVERING THE VALLÉE DE MAI ON PRASLIN ISLAND. When we organized our Seychelles trip in late 2018, we decided to devote 4 full days on Praslin island alone. After a fascinating day trip on Curieuse island and a lovely evening spent on Praslin we embarked on December 29th for a visit of the famous Vallée de Mai, arguably Praslin crown jewel. This is a legendary site that was once thought to be the true Garden of Eden by fanciful British general Charles Georges Gordon after he visited the place in 1881 on a military mission.Jul

MEETING WITH A GIANT TORTOISE: A CHILDHOOD DREAM. Certainly one of the highlights of my Seychelles trip, meeting with Aldabrachelys gigantea will remain as a lifetime memory. This giant tortoise was the very reason we included Curieuse island on our schedule and the reason why tourists and nature lovers alike visit this small granitic island situated close to the north coast of Praslin island. On December 28th 2018, we barely arrived in Praslin after a 5 days stay on Mahé when we decided to embark forthwith for avisit to Curieuse.

ARENARIA INTERPRES, THE RUDDY TURNSTONE. I observed this discreet bird while I was wandering in Curieuse island. It was digging in the sand looking fo some food, invertebrates obviously. After some research, this bird turns out to be the ruddy turnstone also known as Arenaria interpres (Charadriiformes order and Scolopacidae family). The genus name Arenaria means that this species inhabits sand ('arena' is the latin for 'sand') so it was no surprise retrospectively to observe this bird in this biotope.Jul

A NURSERY OF NEGAPRION ACUTIDENS, THE SICKLEFIN LEMON SHARK. Starting this blog back in 2010, I never thought I would dedicate an article on a shark species. Back in these days, the blog was 80% focused on carnivorous plants and other plants and while they are still the backbone of this website, I have broadened the topics to many other types of animals. Because I am not comfortable with water-I'm a really really poor swimmer-I though that marine fauna would never be highlighted here butI was wrong.

A COUPLE OF GLEAMING CRABS FROM CURIEUSE ISLAND. I have a few Seychelles crabs post left to post from my Seychelles trip. Arguably, the most radiant I encountered was the little blue fellow depicted below. I was crossing the mangroves pontoons of Curieuse island observing the wildlife when I noticed here and there a few blue spots on the wet sand. There were hundreds if not thousands of brown to red crabs in that habitat so I first thought that these blue dots were some stones or some kind of detritus.Jul

A BLAST FROM THE PAST: THE CURIOUS PERIOPHTALMUS. As far as I can remember, I have always been attracted to the tropics. It must something related to my roots I guess (I was born in Vietnam from Cambodian parents) and when I grew up, I spent countless hours reading books on tropical habitats and its dizzying fauna and flora. Among the strange animals that haunted my childhood awakened dreams were these odd crawling fishes known under the well known name of 'Periophtalmes' in the French language.Jul

FOUDIA MADAGASCARIENSIS, THE RED FODY. The Red fody, also known as Foudia madagascariensis, is a very common bird in the Seychelles. I remembered having seen one specimen upon my arrival on Mahé in late December 2018 in the garden of our rental house. I have always liked red animals and was amazed to see this passeriforme wandering around from grass to trees. Because my poor knowledge of the Seychelles avifauna, I didn't suspect at the time that I would encounter this bird on numerous occasions on the following days of my sojourn.Welcome!

About me
About me
* François Sockhom Mey meyfryahoofr, Nord, France BOTANICAL BLOG: A GARDEN'S CHRONICLE I was born in Ha-Tien, Vietnam, after my Cambodian parents fled the Khmer Rouge regime. I arrived in France at the age of 3, and now teach French literature in high school. I became passionately interested in carnivorous plants in 2004, and has since intensively studied their systematics and ecology, with a particular focus on the Indochinese Nepenthaceae. Il me semble avoir toujours dessiné.
